Holiday Update!!

So for those of you following the progress...I made a little bit over the last few weeks.
Since my last post I have installed my EGR cooler and pipe, along with everything else that accompanies that. I had a broken bolt on the EGR cooler and had to drill it out and re tap it. With that all behind me, I was able to run a new fuel line from the pump and I used my old return line as the one I had bent just wasn't doing the job. Then I got the aircleaner on and all the elements that go with that. I also ordered some new vacuum line and cut my first piece for the carb.

I still have to run the break lines and then mount the brake booster. Looking forward to getting that behind me.

Thanks to all that helped me with my fuel line routing questions yesterday.

Holiday Update Alert! Knob Restoration 101

Man...so it has been a month since my last post. Dont worry I have been working on it. I had to square a few things away first with my body mounts before I continued on hooking stuff up that went through the fire wall.

So...that brings us to today. Christmas. Knob restoration.

So I followed the advice here on MUD and went to Michaels last night a 5pm to get a red and white paint pen. I was not able to get Sharpie ones as they were out, but the Michaels brand did just fine. I have about 20 minutes wrapped up in all the knobs. I didn't think it would go this fast.

So here is what you need if you are thinking of doing this.

Paint pens...dont worry about getting the extra fine. Mine were fine and still were way too thick to get in the tiny letters. So I slobbed it on and then the magic eraser did the rest. Like it only took seconds to remove the excess once the paint was dry. And yes I have the pourus knobs.

I have posted finished photos of all, except one. So you could see the before and after.

Also...stayed tuned over the next week and a half as I have lofty goals.
Here goes...
1. All dash knobs installed along with wiring.
2. Gas tank install and line hook up
3. Evap hook up and covers installed
4. Gas cap cover and lock install
5. Brake booster install
6. Brake Master install

I'm sure I will be back with more questions. Especially for you SCCR. I know you posted a few holes in the floor pan and such for me...thank you. But I still need one more photo below where the evap stuff is mounted. There is a metal line that runs to the charcole canister and I need to drill that hole and get a grommet for it...I just dont want to drill it too big.

Oh...almost forgot. Heater install and tranny cover along with all the boots etc that go on the shifters!

That's some great work you're doing Colorado...looks like it's pretty close to being done! Outstanding! I'm in a similar situation with my 40. Same year & color and mine is also in another state! I'm currently looking for a suitable space to haul my project from Texas to San Diego and begin my rebuild. I wish I had a relative with a fully equipped shop!!! Keep at it brother!

Thanks... Thanks a lot .... My wife yelled at me for being "anti-social" because I spent the last 1/2 hr going thru your thread .... Thanks man :)

Love everything about your build! The color is GREAT!

I was looking for what booster/master combo your going with... Original ones ... New?

Today

Knobs look awesome, still have to do mine. Take a picture exactly where you need me to take a pic and I'll post one asap! Merry Christmas!

Don I will snap a photo this week. Merry Christmas to you and your family as well!

I get accused of being on MUD or in the garage working on that 40 ALL the time. Its all I ever do..yadda yadda. But I did get away with working on those knobs today. :bounce:

As far as my booster/master combo. I had the original booster rebuilt by Dewey in Oregon. If you have yours, pull your check valve out and see if any brake fluid ever got inside. If your master does not have signs of leaking yours might be fine like mine and they can rebuild everything but the diaphragm. But as long as no fluid got inside you are good to go. Then for the master I just got a new Toyota one. Hope this helps.

It sucked having the 40 two states away. All though I wouldn't have been able to accomplish what I have without it being there as long as it was. I just don't have all the tools my cousin does. Nor the skills.

But November 2012 I brought it back to Colorado and it is so much better being able to work on it a few hours every night. When I had it in Iowa, I worked on it like it was a job for a whole week. That kind of sucked because I wouldn't see my family and just enjoy myself...it was work work work and took away from the experience. I hope you get yours home soon. You will love it that much more.

That is an awesome rebuild. Read every post and waiting on pics of the finished product. Can you give us a rough cost of the project and the amount of time you have in it? I know the time will be wide because of the down time but its nice to know.

New Years Update

So I spent the last few days getting all of the knobs installed, glove box door, ash tray and all the wiring hooked up along with the instrument bezel installed. I still have to tidy up the ebrake and few other misc little things. I am going to post a new thread to identify a sensor on my transmission that needs replaced. Once I have that new sensor I can button up the tranny cover and then install the heater.

I still have to get the brake booster installed and the brake master. I am on schedule to get that completed along with the windshield wiper motor. Debating having a new piece of glass made for the windshield or just rocking my old one.

I'm getting closer....

Cheers and Happy New Year.

I must say, I was a little leery when I saw your truck at the beginning i.e. the cancer … what a transformation … you have a sweet ride … thank you for your insights, and your honesty …

I just bought a 78 FJ40 and will be posting pictures soon … it has some issues in the usual areas especially the sill and rockers … I can only hope my truck looks as nice of yours when I'm finished the repairs …

Happy New Year … it appears one of the first good things in 2014 is you'll be driving your 40, soon …
:)

I'm installing a rebuilt 75 OEM carb soon on my '77, and one of the things I'm planning on is putting a carb cooling fan back on it again(couldn't find an original, but I have a bilge blower that I modified to fit).
Question--do you have the manifold temp sensor on yours?(this is supposed to be the sensor in the circuit that turns on the fan when the compartment temp gets over 180 deg.) I understand it is supposed to mount on a bracket near the manifold somewhere behind the carb.(I couldn't see any evidence of this in your pics)
The replacement carb has a sensor mounted on the back, but I'm told this was for smog stuff(which has all been removed), and won't work for the cooling fan.

My 77 did note have a factory carb cooling fan. I know 78s have them but I'm sure somewhere in 77 they changed over. If I had to guess it is a September or later 77 if you have one. Mine is a Feb 77. I do have a temp sending unit hidden behind the carb. Not sure if it is universal or not. Wish I could be of more help to you.

My 77 also does not have the carb cooling fan. Looks great, do you think I could put my pedal assembly in and still install the wiring harness after?

SSCR. I would get your instrument bezel in first before you put your pedal assembly in. The hard part I had was getting the Speedo cable properly installed with the pedal assembly installed. Not much room to work with your fingers. Lots of swear words. It can be done cause I did it that way. But doing it over I would have installed It first.
