I am out in Denver as well, come by any time and see my project. Did you also POR the axles? Whats your overall thought about it? I have purchased it and the chassis black top coat, but I am still wondering if that is how I want to go. Also how much did you use to cover your Chassis and axles? Keep the pics coming. Thanks

Two more questions:
1) I just purchased the same bolt kit. How is the gold cad finish? Do you think it will cover your needs?
2) The guy at the paint store recommended not spraying the POR. Said it might mess up my gun if any dries up. Curious if you sprayed the final black coat? Hand painted the POR stage 2 coating? If you hand painted can you see brush marks?

I guess that is more than 3 questions....

I used about 1 qt of POR on the frames and axles. I simply used foam brushes and nylon brushes. I think it cam out great and I still have to put on the top coat but it won't take more than a couple hours to do it. I don't think you will need to spray it on as it drys so nicely without streaks.

As far as the bolt kit goes. It looks fantastic. I haven't really got to assemble anything other than the frame, but I did use a few of them and they seem to be perfect. I don't think you will be disappointed.

I would love to stop over and see your project, just let me know where you live.

Engine. Done

Well it has been a few months since I did any updating so here it goes...

I had a few days (5 total) to work on detailing and painting the engine, putting all new gaskets in and front/rear seals. As you can see from the photos below, the engine had 30 years of gunk and goo all over it. I had a little help getting it on a engine stand and then I hit it with about 4 cans of oven cleaner. I then used several wire brushes, picks, and razor blades to get all of the old gasket material off.

Some of you might say "Wow...five days" ...it seemed to take forever. I took every nut and bolt, air rail plug, engine mount bolt and media blasted them. I then painted all of them individually. I cleaned out the oil pan so well you could have ate out of it. Then the assembly process started. My biggest mistake was not getting the rear main seal in while it was on the stand and oil pan off. I couldn't get to it and ruined my seal trying to install it.

Also in the pics is the engine sitting back in the chassis. The next time I get 4 days to work I am lifting the engine back out and I have to attach the new rear cross member and supports and then one more coat of POR15 and then I am shooting it with Chassis Coat. Then everything will be torqued down to spec and engine placed back in for good.

I need to run my transfer case up to Steve in MN as I do not have time to go over it and get everything done. I have all my brake calipers, pads, brake lines to complete my chassy. I'm slowly seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

Also you will see rebuilt warn hubs. I took them all apart, cleaned, painted and replaced with new seals. I polished the turn dial instead of painting it.

I couldn't have done all of this without everyone on this forum. I appreciate everyone here.

Mark

**Yes I know I have a broken bolt sticking out there. Just haven't gotten around to getting it out..

Not crazy about the Valve Cover

All I did was media blast the valve cover but I think it looks all the same. Not sure if I will change this or not, but once everything gets bolted back on I might not even be able to see it. Opinions?

Still more pics...

As you can see the rear main seal is out. Should I have taken the old one out? It appeared to be fine. Too late now....and like I said I ruined my new one tapping it in.

Check out those WARNS! If you have old ones don't bother buying new ones. Just rebuild the oned you have. All it takes is a little time.

New cross member and supports

Can't wait to get these on...

Question...would you all just bolt these together or actually weld the spring perches to the crossmember like they came from the factory?

Cruiser Bling

Well. I suppose it is time for me to update my progress. I feel like I don't have much here, but hold on. The next four months you are going to see this thing fly together.
Since the last photos have been posted this is what has been done.
1. New clutch
2. New pressure plate
3. New throw out bearing
4. New water pump
5. New rear cross member and braces painted
6. Front heater box and blower painted
7. Tranny/transfer dropped off and Rocky Mountain Cruisers
8. Purchased new hard top and front doors. Rust free $500. Steal
9. Replated parts came back.
ENJOY!

QUESTIONS I NEED HELP WITH

Look at my tranny photos...see the notch on every tooth. Has anyone ever seen that before?

For those of you wondering the plating cost me $80. I brought all the pieces in media blasted already. I think they look pretty good, but I think they lost a couple items. I hope not, but I am short a wing nut for my air cleaner and a spacer that goes on my side cover.

I dropped the stuff off about 2 weeks ago.

Notch on every gear tooth. Hhmm

Check out the second set of gears from the left side of the case. See the little groove on each tooth. Anyone ever seen this?

New Rear Cross Member and Braces Installed

So I had about 4 days to work and got a lot acomplished. I was able to get the rear of the chassy all completed with the new rear member and braces in place as well as getting the rear calipers mounted. I also had to lift the engine back out to put in new motor mount bolts and then I installed a new pilot bearing, new rear main seal, new clutch and pressure plate and then installed the rebuilt tranny. I wouln't have been able to do it so smoothly without the help of everyone on here. Thank you

Next up for work is finishing the front end by putting on the front calipers and getting the tie rods all painted with new ends. Then I am going to finish putting the accesories back on the engine. The body is about ready to go to the paint shop. I am waiting on a new floor pan from PACOL. I ended up finding a rust free 77 hard top and sides along with front doors. So some day down the road I will sell my lightly rusted;) doors, top and sides. I also have a rear cross member that is still good, but the rust has it a little too thin for my all out restoration.

More Pics

If I were to do repairs again like this to another LC I do not think I would tackle the rear frame issues that I had on this project. It ate up a lot of time making all new parts and sourcing a new rear cross member, painting it etc...fyi for those of you looking at rusted out 40's like mine. I am learning the hard way on this project. I am kicking myself for not just buying a new 3/4 tub because I will have ended spending that much $ in the floor pan, wheel wells, rear sill...etc. Oh and the new doors and hard top. If you have to pay a little more for a less rusty 40...you make up for it by not having to make the repairs and spend the money I have. I have learned a ton and for that I am grateful.

Water Pumps-

So I wanted to put the new GMB water pump on, but ran out of time. I'm looking for opinions and advice on this one. You see the PO had modified the truck with the fan so I can't tell for sure if it originally came w/o a clutch fan or with one. The PO had it rigged w a fixed metal blade fan that you could tell was not factory. I kind of would like to go back to a clutch fan set up. So...can I just pull the pulley off my old pump in the photos and press it onto my new H20 pump and then mount the clutch fan on the end of the pulley? I did buy a clutch fan water pump for those who are wondering.

Thank you

Mark

New Floor Pan

This rusty body work is almost complete. Then I have to find a good body person and painter. I have got most of the chassy items done other than running new brake lines/fuel lines. I also installed a new GR toyota starter, fuel pump, oil sensor, water pump and thermostat. I'm eager to get it painted so I can put it back together and enjoy it.

Take a look at that rusty floor pan. Yuck. I purchased a new PACOL and it was almost a perfect fit. The stamp on the passenger side was just a bit off, but we got everything to fit in. All in all very high quality product.
