I know the purist only like stock Toyota tail lights in FJ40s. I am going for more of a street rod fit and finish and want to make an improvement on rear lighting.

Anubody seen anything really cool?

I'm running the Narva (Australian) LED tail lights as seen in this thread: I need some help installing LED tail lights...

They're a huge improvement in visibility over stock, but still look close to stock.

My first guess is 50 pontiac tail lights

I'm thinking about running some 4" round LED semi brake/turn/tail lights.

The little round tail lights on my 65 are some dim, hard to see things. Cracked hazy lenses and rusty housing do not make for a bright light.

IMO,For a real every day rig, Safety beats "originally" any day. The rig isn't worth anything if it's in a wreck.

Not sure about the rear, but I have truck cab running lights for my front turn signals.

Last time I checked new lenses were still available and the light itself. Replace with a LED bulb that would solve your brightest problem and still look OEM. If you use LEDs in the stock or any tail light might have to change the flasher to get turn signals to work. If you do go aftermarket your old lights have a value. Mainly the mounting brackets and housing on the back.

how about a late 40's like 49' Studebaker champion tail lights mounted sideways... i kinda always thought the curve might match up to the cruiser tub

Only issue it they would have little to no protection from brush on the trail. Even worse than Toyota's SUVs today with their bubble tail lights.

Just bought a set off Ebay. Cost me a little over $190 shipped to the US from Austrailia. Dude sent them really quickly and I got them even before their estimated initial arrival date. (Ordered them Feb 26 and got them March 3rd). Pretty slick lights. Installing this weekend with some resistors I bought from superbrightleds.com so the turn signal function works properly on my 75.

Narva 9-33 Volt Model 42 LED Rear Stop/Tail, Direction Indicator and Reverse ...
