Plugs are out of the old one and Marvel Mystery Oil is in the cylinders. Will let it sit til tomorrow and turn the motor over by hand. On a side note: aftermarket wires suck. Had them pull apart and leave part of the spark plug boot in the tube. Had to use hemostats to pull 3 of them out.

Interesting notes on this thread...

I completely forgot and today I started reading about the rebuild.

I am on the fence on a full rebuild on the 1FZ for my 80 or drop an Ls motor in it.

We'll see...

Great project.

Well a confusing afternoon. Motor turned over by hand several revolutions. Put a new battery in it and it spun over great with the plugs out (purging the oil). Put the plugs back in and it cranked several revolutions and then it sounded like the starter was on stripped teeth. Turned it manually at the crank bolt and then it turned over again with the starter till it stopped again sounding like a bad spot on the flex plate. It wouldn't turn one way with the breaker bar on the crank bolt but it would turn backwards. Going to pull the starter and check the gear and the teeth on the flex plate when I get off from the station Wednesday. Looks like the Lexus may be getting all the goodies off of this one!

JP if you build it with all Toyota parts you are going to be in for at least 2,000 in parts alone. A good mechanic is going to run at least a couple of grand for the work and pulling and re-installing the motor as well. Haven't looked at the cost for a swap.

Chebbys are for Chebbys.

My friend Roger, Oldsmobile mechanic and engine builder extrordinaire, has a saying about chebbys.

"Chebby 350's are like assholes. Everybody's got one, and they all stink."

Just curious what he says about Oldsmobiles?

At least the progress on this is moving alot faster than the 4 Runner...Nice work Fireman.

Will either of these truck make an appearance at SCC? We are close to having a "new wife truck" run on level 2 or 3 trails max. I need to let Tisa put a dent in the 100 first then it will be game on.

On that 4runner issue!

My 40 is done sir!...and by that I mean the suspension... and the best of it, it works!

I put front fox air shocks and rear coil springs in the back, front locked D60 and rear locked 14 bolt...

When I drove her:grinpimp:, she's a different truck.

She's more than what I expected.

My tranny is an SM465 and a twin stick NP205 w/ front dig... it works beatiful:hillbilly:

the 40 it's great...

She's a heavy and ugly looking girl but I love it:hillbilly:

it has been an 11 yrs love affair!

all I need is a cage and some spray paint and Fernie's truck (my son, the lil' one)is done

Wednesday was a week ago.

What did you find?

Went to the beach for a week....found some sand, bikinis, fish and lots of good food! If I can catch up this week I plan on pulling the starter.

We were able to get the head on and the cams installed. Starting to look like a motor again.

Went ahead and rebuilt the alternator while it was out.

And where we left it.
