Warning: I am a total newb to the 80 Series but I've been wantingone for some time after wheeling with Woody and the Mississippi wagon folks. Wheeling in Clayton last week with Delancy did nothing but make me want one worse. So I'm picking up a 97 LX tomorrow that has a rod knocking.

I have two options on a new engine. One is a 95 pull out from a yard and the other is 94 from a friend in Arkansas. My question is which would be the most straight forward swap. I have no fear of removing the head from the 97 (to have all the sensors needed on the head?) and putting it on the 94 if the 94 block has all of the necessary senors and sending units in place. The CPS would be a questionable one possibly?

The 95 should be plug and play as long as it is OBD2? If not, what would it take to make it work with the existing harness?

Any good words?

Thanks

Fireman

You want the '95 parts for your '97. Pre '95 block has the CPS issue and it's a PITA so avoid it if you can.

I am not positive but I believe the earlier wire harness was not setup for CPS and the later harness is. how hard it is to add the CPS to 94 block I don't know. that and the additional wiring that might be needed to go to the sensors it might be located on the 94 head are some of my main concerns. again I am really nude all this thing really have no idea what the hell I'm talking about yet

so exactly how hard is it to put the CPS into a 94 block

Have both engines on stands.
Separate both oil pans (the middle one) from the block
swap middle oil pan

Beno, did I miss anything?

Well that doesn't sound too bad. I've got a few extra engine stands.

OK, thanks for all the tips guys. At Woody's suggestion I called CDan, Georg and a few others. CDan set me pretty straight on what it took.

Pull the head so that the timing chain cover can be removed (change timing chain also)

Upper oil pan off of the 97

Oil gear drive off of the 97

CPS exciter ring off of the 97

Throttle Body off of the 97

Exhaust manifold off of the 97

At lest the upper intake manifold off of the 97

Planned on doing the headgasket and waterpump and maybe plasti-gaugeing the main and possibly the rod bearings on the new engine anyway. Now I just need to go retrieve the Pink Panty Mobile and journey to Bossman's Secret Lair and get some parts a headed this way.

I showered last week, isnt that sufficient?

I think my wife may lay claim to it so not very likely it will see Clayton except maybe on the k trail.
