So excited for your setups! You’ll have a 2.8, 4bt, and a V8 to work from, that’s so awesome!

unfortunately, we can't keep the 2.8 for much longer. Client has to take delivery at SOME point...

Got a 94 with seriously blown head gasket not too long ago. Going to swap engines with a locally sourced 1FZ until my 4bt is finalized and ready to go in.

Pretty sure it belonged to somebody here at one point, according to the guy I bought it from who ended up not being able to get it into Canada.

It’s a little rough around the edges, but I’m ok with that because I usually am too. This will be a daily driver and a camping/off-road rig, and eventually diesel (going to change up plans for my 92 to a v8 swap with some long travel goodies).

I’m seriously digging the factory rock sliders...

Rig will get a full kit of @Delta VS goodies as needed.

Time to learn all about this motor and the intricacies of these later model 80s.

First question, after reading in the FAQ and going down a little bit of a rabbit hole, it seems I can simply remove the VC and be fine? No need to actually replace it with a spool? I have a set of Aisin hubs waiting, so I just need to remove VC and install a CDL switch like the extra one I have for my 92?

I wonder why he could not import it into Canada? It should be no issue, it is a NA market vehicle and it is over 15 years of age!

I am so jealous!!! That is my dream Cruiser! My biggest regret is selling my sunroofless 91.

Wanna trade for my lx? :)
Hi,
I am curious as to why these are better with no sunroof, is it because they leak? Mine is a 93 with the poverty package cloth seats are pristine but it has a sunroof, no leaks.

I think I commented on your post about it? He was having trouble because US Customs wouldn't let it out I think, without who knows what. All I know is he couldn't make it happen and wanted to wash his hands of the deal.

K, thanks. All that is needed is a form that releases the vin out of the USA, that has to be there at US customs for a minimum of 72 hrs before he can cross the border though. Then the US release it to CDN customs, then the tax man gets his share and you are free to go.

And was there a post on MUD or a for sale on this truck?

Cheers

Well, he had it for sale for at least a month and couldn't get any takers. Not sure what the deal was. And he owned it and tried to deal with it for about 2 months and couldn't get it figured out. I'm just stoked to have it now.

Donor rig is a little emptier now

Nice find, I had a blown hg and thought about engine swap but I eventually decided to stick with the most reliable option.

The above pic IS the donor engine for now. Just straight swap for the time being until the Cummins is finished.

Gears everywhere. Putting the lowlow and 10% underdrive gears so I don't have to mess with the diffs when this thing gets the bigger tires.

One of the shift forks is pretty messed up. Have any of you who have actually been inside one of these things seen anything similar?

Pile o' parts I’m never going to have to touch again

these engines are multiplying. hopefully I will be able to combine and get one decent one to tide me over until the 4bt is finished.

donor transmission isn't looking so healthy on closer inspection. who thought getting all this done in time for Cruise Moab would be a good idea??

Replaced this and the little one next to it while the engine was out (PHH FHH), peace of mind while waiting for diesel and time. Couldn’t see this wear until I undid the bolts and completely bent the tube out of the way. Glad I was able to change.

Also had to repair the EGR tube while everything was out:

Underdrive gears were kinda funky with stock size tires, going to go try with the 315s. They are “filling out” the no lift wheelwells something fierce.

Decided I’d rather have a bunch of metal CHUNKS inside my case than metal DUST, instructions for the low low t-case gears called for grinding the oil slinger rivets out but I just put in mill to cut them. Much more fun. Clearance the fork shaft hole with end mill while I was in there as well.

Not super stoked about having to remove this obviously useful magnet from the t-case system when installing the low low gears, but I guess that’s the price I pay for wanting to go slow.

I’m sure it’s been posted before, but here is a comparison of the idler shaft low range gears, stock on the left, 3:1 on the right. I was pretty impressed with how close the big gear got to the side of the case without touching, but forgot to take a pic :(

Also added one of these since it was all apart anyway for the swap. No more dirt/water coming up from the tunnel.

So with engine swap comes new engine issues. Both engines seemed to idle fine before the swap even though the otiginal was dumping coolant in the oil.

Now the swapped engine is not idling nice. Between nothing and 900 or so. Did some searching, mostly says vacuum, will be reinspecting all that (looked closely and inspected before putting engine in).

One thing I kept coming across is "there is no idle adjustment for 1FZ". I see screws that seem to be for that kind of thing, does that only apply to OBD2 rigs?

Any input appreciated.
