Okay just like everyone else on here I need some help with my tailgate. The rear window doesnt work. Big surprise :rolleyes: Well I took off the pannel on the inside and first thing I notices was a tarry, black, sticky substance. But only on the top portion of where the pannel makes contact with the tailgate. Then I noticed a thin now very brittle, semi-transparent plastic covering the far left access hole and the remeance of it on the center hole. Are these things typical?

Now when I turn the key or flip the switch nothing happens. Again big surprise. The thing is though that there was no sound no movement nothing. The window was open about an inch. So while turning the key and pushing on the left upper corner of the tail gate I pushed the window down. While doing so there was a clunk, clunk, clunk as the window droped inch by inch. I had to repeat the procedure to get the window up. again there was the clunk.

I figure I need the nylon gear. Just becasue I am sure it is busted.

And I think I need to check the power supply to the motor.

But my main question is what is the best way to get the glass and motor out?

4 bolts hold the regulator on. Once off you have to slide it right to take the left roller out of the slide then go left to to get the right roller out then it will drop. Then push glas as far as you can up and get the rollers out of the frame. the rest will come out. It wasn't easy. You can also check the switch on the left it sometimes has issues.
 
to get my window out, i seperated the glass from the channel (little screwdriver in the end of the channel to get window started), then, the channel actually seperates making it easy to get to the regulator.

from the no motor and clunk clunk sounds, sounds like you have two issues...power to the motor or the motor itself, and the gear in the regulator.
 
There have been many posts on Piggie rear windows. This is a crucial part of this beast. All this stuff is old: old glass, old rubber, old gear, old motor, old wires, old braces, old everthing etc. There is also old crud that gets into the wiring, the channel and everyhting else. There is one thing I have observed over the years of owing a FJ55: so many folks think the tail gate motor is the problem. These motors are tough and are seldom the big bad cause of Iron Pig owner grief. Check everthing else first...

So I could lay my tailgate down I just ran a wire directly from the battery to the window motor. Later found out that the big blue wire that run from the dash switch to the window motor were cut. That motor has some serious power.
If you need any tailgate parts, I have the whole assembly on my 72 parts rig.

Once you get inside the gate you will find a small circuit board section with all the tail gate wires leading to it. Make sure they are all there. Make sure the contact ends of the wires are good as well. Check the condition of the little plastic gear thing. Cheap part, still available, and often the cause of tail gate window woes...

To remove the glass there are two clips that hold it into the bottom channel these slide into and out of place. Once removed the glass can be removed from the tail gate easily. The clips that you need to remove are circled in thepic below.

Also, when you get around to looking at the wiring going to and from the motor and while you troubleshooting this...don't forget the interlock switch located on the left side quarter panel. The tail gate closes on this little switch. It's purpose in life is to not allow the window motor to operate unless the tailgate is closed. In other words if the tailgate is down no power will get to the motor. I agree when you open up the motor the little plastic gear will be in pieces...an easy fix.
 
Be careful of that terminal block too (circuit board), where it is positioned it is possible for the connecting lever of the door latch to short out on it, mine has done this at some stage, so when i took it out it crumbled, i replaced it with a new plastic one.

How the hell do you remove those clips?!? :mad:

I was able to get the tray and clips out of the tailgate, but what a PITA!

My question now is, what should I be checking if my rear window motor operation is really intermittent?
