I just had my rear heater rebuilt and I want to install it. When I bought the truck it was not in it. I saw a 73 that had the rear heater sitting behind the seats, but for some reason, I thought it would go under the driver seat. I can't find any location pics online. My truck is a 74.
If anyone can tell me where it should be mounted, I would greatly appreciate it. I am attaching a pic of the heater type that I have. TIA

for your 74' under drivers seat is the jack bracket and tool bag straps:

I found a used bag online and I still had the original straps.

You're fortunate to have the original hardware snd straps. The straps are a cloth material and deteriorates over time and the hardware rusts away. I've made non stk replacements b4 and am currently looking into making more for a few members. if you interested let me know. I can use your hardware and update to nylon.

I believe vfrer is correct.

Below is a link to a BAT auction of a 1978 FJ40 with only 5,000 miles. The BAT description states "This is considered the nicest example known in the world by experts in the marque."

Photo 52 shows the rear heater mounted slightly off center to the right, behind the front seats.

While this is a 1978 and the OP's rig is a '74, both had front bucket seats from the factory.

I've never seen the heater behind the driver seat, but I can't say it didnt happen. Im curious what year @rainingagain 40 is.
My 72 was behind the seats, but couldn't tell you if it was slightly offset. My 75 appears to be centered between the bucket seats. From what I've seen there have always been 2 threaded holes in the floor for the heater.

Yeah, same here, never seen it before. This is May 66 build date. The tub does not have the captive nuts. Here is where I had a discussion on it - Rear Heater Refresh - Some Tech Questions - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/rear-heater-refresh-some-tech-questions.1297391/

I don't think the heater behind the drivers seat is stock. I think it would have threaded holes if it was. When did factory front heaters start?
