College football season. Nothing beats sitting on top of a mountain next to a fire drinking beer with about 20 other people and watching your friends favorite team lose. There are also about 10 pizzas sitting under the blanket on the hood.

Wouldn't you like to have hot pizza waiting for you when you pull in from a long day on the trail?

Unfortunately, the SafariSoftshell is apparently no longer in the business or ? In any case, I was unable to come up with a viable way to contact them.

I used a telephone. Spoke to a very nice guy who said they no longer make the product due to manufacturers changing tailgate designs with each model. I asked about back stock, they are sold out with no plans to do more.

Looked pretty sweet.

Jon did, got through and seems to have eliminated it as a possibility, unless you find a used one somewhere.

Me? I was too cheap to call:p, just determined the 80 model one was unavailable somehow. -- and now I can't remember how I even did that.
It's a PITA to get old:crybaby:

I can set up my Hilleberg Akto single-man tent in the capacious cargo hold. On long road trips you feel invincible inside your protective enclosure and sleep as snug as a bug in the rug, warm and dark.

Safarisoftshell

I have had the safari for over 8 years now and wouldnt reccomend it. It was way overpriced(I think over $400 at the time) built very cheap and the threads are coming apare with little use and doesnt fit well. It clamps to the top hatch struts and leaves a huge gap between the hatch and body on both sides letting in rain and bugs. For $50 maybe but not what they are asking. Your better off going with one of the universal setups others listed. I have some pictures somewhere but cant seem to find them..... I think they were designed to be very compact and light which it is but suffers in the quality department because of it.

Has anyone tried calling the softshell vendor recently?

SafariSoftshell Sleepers, Campers, Tailgate Tents

I just called, they no longer make them for ANY models, I asked if they had any sitting around that they haven't sold and they said they had a couple for maybe an Isuzu or something like that. They said the Land Cruiser are the first they sold out of once they stopped making them.

I like the idea of that DA1 2 posts up in the desert pic- however a good tent is just more practical for majority of conditions and scenarios- moving your gear in/out and sleeping in an 80 series pretty much = sucks ass

We don't move our gear into and out of the 80. It's our sleeper. Mostly, we use the DAC tent inside an awning that encloses the rear of the truck. There are some pics in the previous link, plus some more here:
https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/412084-camper-conversion-drawer-system.html

Towards the end, there are better detail shots of how I modded the DAC to better fit the 80. I'm no Betsy Ross:p

Besides being part of the aforementioned camping rig, the DAC also makes it possible to do a quick camp for the night without erecting all or any of the awning. Since our camping gear it carried mostly in the trailer, the back end of the 80 is always ready for a good night's sleep.

This works best for two adults. A small kid or two might be possible, especially if one could sleep up front in the truck. For larger groups, it won't work, but makes a nice expedition rig.
