I usually pull all the studs out (A pain, but worth it) and clean the surface really well with a wire wheel on a drill. They use "The Right Stuff" I think Permatex makes it and it comes in a short caulking tube... to seal it back up. It's been good to me.

I like gasket cause it's not as messy as rtv when you over use it.please do use the proper rtv if your using it make sure that is designed for gear lube.

I use both. As mentioned, clean both sides very well and then finish up with brake cleaner. I then use a very thin layer of Toyota orange FIPG on both sides of the gasket and then assemble. Snug everything up well but don't torque it down to spec until after a couple of hours to give the FIPG just a bit of time.

Of course it's not like I've done this very often; once to be exact, front and rear.

Exactly what I do as well. The paper gasket makes it easy to get the diff out next time, but the RTV makes peeling the remnants of the gasket off easier too. I like the Permatex "Right Stuff" in the cheez-wiz type can.

Can't beat a die grinder with a Scotch-Brite biscuit for cleaning these off, goes really quick.
