Carefull with those Moab rocks. Climbed sandstone my first time and last time down there about ten years ago and peeled off a human size chunk of stone. Scared the crap out of me and almost nailed my climbing partner. Potash is solid, but you might get run over by a dump truck.

Cruiser content: I'm starting my rear bumper this weekend after dragging the hitch over Hells Revenge in Moab last weekend.

Trent

Thanks for the heads up Trent. The same ?'s plague me everytime when going to Moab.

Wheel? :D That's always gonna happen. I've gotta get there somehow.

Bike? :D It takes about 2 minutees to load 'em on the 80.

Climb? :D It takes less than 2 minutes to throw the bag in the back.

Now I need to finish building the 80.

yeah i know the feeling on what to do.
im still torn on my next month moab trip to take the cruiser or the wifes maxima. from where I live I am looking at 1200 miles each way at 10 mpg avg and gas at 2.00 a gal for almost 500 in gas for my truck less than half of that for the maxima. also none of my buddies Im going down with are planning on wheeling and solo wheeling is not my idea of a good time. probably just climb and hike and drink beer.
Dave

where are you folks getting the locking mechanism for the swingouts. also, are you using rockstomper spindles or making your own with 1.75" spindles?

Kumar

I used Rockstomper's spindle. Cheap and strong.

Question to the folks with tire carriers:

Are there occasions when the spare tire is hitting rocks and such while climbing steep ascents? Worse case scenario is the tire hitting the body/rear glass. I'm trying to decide if I need a loop welded to the bumper to protect the tire from getting hit.

Alia...I do not have any problems with clearance. My bumper hits before the tire would. Go to the 2nd post in this thread, you'll see my set-up. Draw an imaginary line from the contact patch on my PS rear tire to the bottom of the spare tire. Notice how the bumper gets in the way...just as it does when I'm "testing" my departure angle ;)
HIH,
John

Hey Junk,

Here are some details on hardware used on my custom built bumper:

My hinge came from RockStomper.com

I used two spring loaded latches (link below.) One was welded onto the Rock Stomper hinge to lock the swing out tire carrier when open. The other was used as a failsafe to keep the swing arm from coming open if the clamp latch ever failed for some reason, which is doubtful given that it already has a positive locking clamp to prevent it from opening. If I did it again I 'd forgo the spring loaded latch that is on the end of the arm - the McMaster latch is plenty and seems pretty bomber. It is rated to 700#s.

Item 1: DK-9 - Weld-on Spring Latch $6.99

I ordered the pull bar clamp from McMater.

Here is the part # and price.

1 EA 51335A65 - Pull Action Toggle $21.81 EA $21.81 Clamp W/Positive Latching Steel, 700# Holding Cap, 1-25/32" H X 5-31/32" L O'all

When I have a chance I'll post some detail pics from home.

Looking to make a dual jerrycan holder for my kaymar bumper. Anybody know where I can get a housing and bearings that would fit the kaymar spindles? Thanks

That's going to be tough in my opinion. I just spent a ton of time removing races from mine and I can get you the bearing #s, but to find one that will fit the top and bottom, and then sit just right, you might be hard pressed to find one. Have you tried calling Man-A-Fre to see if they had any. I've talked to them a few times now for a rebuild kit and some extra seals and they always seem to have something laying around. You might just give it a shot.

Holy crap Cdan. You are bloody brilliant :flipoff2:. How long have you seen me posting on these forums? I've always said I run BFG AT/KO's for street and Swampers :birf: for trail.

Well,

Yer praise fer Swampers so over-powered my feble memory banks that I was temporarily stunned when I spyed that BFG tread pattern. :flipoff2:

I promise that I will remember that when it comes time for you to reach for your billfold in order to repair yer beater edition :flipoff2:

Gumby,
could you shoot one fomr the side? also did you bevel the rear sill plate or did it stay upright.
Dave

One from the side.
I chopped off a couple of inches of frame rail. The main body is a 2x4x3/16 tube. The bottom plate is 3/16 plate as are the wings. The tube tucks in under the tailgate a little. The frame mounts are 1/2"x 4 plate bolted to the frame with 4 5/8 grade 8 bolts per side. The plate goes through the 2x4 and is welded on both sides and built up to 1" on the outside where they become the shackle mounts. The receiver tube is welded both sides and has a cross brace of 1.5" square tube
I still have to finish the wings and skim coat the grind marks. The black semi-gloss really makes every little imperfection pop out. I'm still deciding on what to do with the flare to bumper transition. It does not effect the function so it doesn't bother me so much.

thanks gumby looking good so far.
still kicking this one around in my head so all the info avail is a good thing.
Dave

Looks pretty nice Gumby. Any close up pictures of your integrated tow hitch? Also, as far as the flare/bumper junction goes have you considered trimming the vertical radius of the factory mudflap so that it is straight and integrates with the wing on your bumper. From the pics it looks as if the wing may need to be bumped out a bit but trimming the mudflap this way will provide for a very clean line. The bottom horizontal section of the radius could also be trimmed to a straight line but on a slight angle at the bottom of the wing. Then your bumper wings will line up exactly on the mudflap which lines up perfectly with the flare. If you don't like the flaps, they can be bobbed but at least the look is clean and factory looking. Just a thought! Cheers
