Realistic Cost(s) of FJ40's

What could I expect to get for this 1970 FJ40 with 75 2F that was installed in 1975? Bought from the original owner in 2011. Head liner was replaced shortly before I bought. They removed the cap and used the original weatherstripping. Replaced that with OEM. Top and doors have never been off. I made a living fitting HVAC and would have starved as a salesman. Where should I market it?

1975 is a good year.

76 is better....disc brakes up front

Early 75 iirc still had a F engine later 75 had the 2F with hardened valves that play nicer with unleaded fuel

Is that all original paint, no rust? Column shift 3-speed still? Brake booster/dual circuit or single circuit brakes? Looks really nice

Brakes are the original single circuit non booster brakes. This is an Arizona rust free original paint FJ40. Around the brake master and clutch master That have leaked over the years and peeled the paint. Those areas have very light surface rust. Fine grind sandpaper and primer and touch up. Other than than replacing the cap weatherstripping I just cleaned up the wiring for a small trailer. He had had a WWiI MBT trailer from 1943 he would tow. He had an awful angle iron bumper with a trailer. With the sale he included the original bumperettes and step. It does have the column shift. The Ramsey winch was a dealer add on. Think the cable to operate it is frozen. Never been anywhere close to need a winch. It's too nice to actually use offroad other forest service roads. I obviously had other cruisers available for that.

The 75 all had a 2F. The 70 I posted above had the third lowest serial on the 2F thread. Two others were out of the US. I've tried to locate a F155 close to the original. Besides the being correct engine I really would like to keep the 2F. Vehicle can sit for months and it starts up as some has the carburetor has gas. 2F is an improvement over the F engine. Not sure about the late F155 with the new oil system. My 73 FST has a 74 F155 but I've never started it. Only had it thirty years and don't rush things.

Depends on if you want to sell it, or if you are looking for someone to pay your "everything is for sale for the right price" price. Thats a nice 40.

I would see if someone like @overton could find a home for it through a consignment/commission sale if you don't want to deal with the sale.

My 73 FST has a 74 F155 but I've never started it. Only had it thirty years and don't rush things.

Am I reading that correctly - owned it 30 years and never once fired the engine !?!? The 73 FST is the Pollux Orange 40?

edit: I have severe garage envy! All my junk sits outside under covers.

Maybe Toyota finished off some F engine in third world Markets. But I see zero listing for F engines that the period didn't end 1/75. All the years on mud never seen a late 74 built in 1/75 with a F engine showed up. No 75 model was ever sold in the US with an F engine. I had a friend who bought one of the first 75 FJ40s to hit the US shores. This was January 1975. He was so impressed by how tough my 68 was he had to one. He dumpes his 74 Datsun pickup he just bought. Could not find a new 74 FJ40 anywhere in LA and bought one of the first 75 models imported to southern California. I looked on around and could not find any FJ40 model RHD or LHD showing a F engine that the date didn't end 1/75. Do you have any other places you find a F listed after 1/75. I know you won't find any listing for the US market. Or Australia which was Toyota's biggest market for the 40.series. I ordered from Mega Zip in the past and have yet to get anything but a refund. If I don't see a part listed on someone else's site as available I no longer bother with them. I still do order parts I believe to be NLA for foreign businesses but no longer from Mega Zip. They are 0% on coming thru.

I would be curious if a 75 with a F engine was found in some other markets what date the block was cast. I also challenge you find any FJ40 that was built 1/75 that has a F listed on the data plate under the hood. Toyota upgraded the under hood plaque 1/75. Those plaques have a lot more information than previous years. Up to the mid 1960s Toyota included the engine serial number on that plaque. But that information was long gone by 1975. But engine type and displacement is there.

I see that the 1/74-9/74 were all local Japan market.
It might depend on when your idea of "'75" starts.
I had the opportunity to match wits with both my DMV and the Ca smog nazis when registering my 12/'74 FJ55. They insisted it was a '75 because of the traditional New Model Year. I countered with the Factory Emissions Manual drawings and the fact that Toyota used the Gregorian calendar and started installing the 2F on 1/1/'75. There were probably some '74 LandCruisers still on the boat, or on the dealer lot in 1975, sold and registered as 1975s and nobody cared.

I recall looking at more than one 1975 FJ40 back in the early 1980's for sale that had F engines in them.

Saw enough that I simply eliminated the 75 MY from my searches because the 1976 not only was guaranteed to have a 2F but it also had disc brakes up front which was a huge improvement over the drums

What I have heard, over the years, and sorta makes sense on paper; the late F, with the new and improved oiling and the smaller displacement is the longest-lasting of the F family of engines.

That is a gorgeous 40. Well looked after and working. Somebody, somewhere wants just that rig. It would not look out of place at Barret-Jackson. List it in Hemmings. Put it on 'Mud if you want it to go to a known good home.

@Living in the Past - To attempt to answer your question, I'd guess $25K +/- on an auction site (not eBay).

Watch BaT daily for a few weeks and see how FJ40s are selling, and research some of the 'sold' listings. FJ40s that sold for 35K last year are selling for 25K this year - a clear softening of the market (at least on BaT).
