Just getting started on this one, her name is Sushi Roll.

Did a lift. New clutch new rear main, New water pump, new oil pump, new timing chain, metal timing chain guides, hi steer, power steering, 4 runner calipers, 80 brake master cylinder. Larger radiator.

About to do a head gasket. Gonna regear to 4.88, spartan lockers front and back and go with 35s.

Will eventually add wider axles in the rear and IFS hubs in the front.

Lots more to come.

Here’s my 1990 SR5
22RE/G58 with the VF1A TC
Has 4.88 gears front and rear
Eaton truetrac out back
Manual hubs
Chassis has 300K miles, motor has about 100K
33x10.5x15 BFG AT KO2 Tires.
Long travel front, OEM arms cut and extended 3.25”.
Upper arm is boxed with 4130 and tig welded, has sway-a-way torsion bars with 2.5x8.5 sway-a-way resi shocks.
Fox 2.0x4 bump stops.
After bump and strap it makes 13 ish inches of travel with stock t100 CV axels.

Rear has eibach coils and sway-a-way 3.0x12” resi shocks. Those are a combo of new/old SAW parts with OG kuster pistons. Makes about 15” of travel.

All the fabrication on the truck I’ve done myself. It’s a comfy cruiser that I actually daily drive. Use it for camping trips and having fun in the desert with my wife and friends.

Bumping...

Now that I am sufficiently smitten with the early 1st gen rigs...

I need pics of long bed trucks with canopies and 35s...

LOL

Nice find, man!

For now I’m just getting it as solid as I can by making it aesthetically nice and reliable. I kind of have an itch to paint it TRD pro cement, but after ripping around on some gravel roads this evening, not having to worry about rock chips etc was nice considering how far the tires stick out compared to my 80. I may end up throwing on a newly painted hood, passenger fender, and paint the roof as well as the hardtop. Pulling the body and blasting the frame and stuff is also something I’d like to do as it definitely needs preserving.

I definitely want to redo the entire interior, but I’m not deadset on it completely yet. For now I’ll probably put fresh carpet up front and vinyl in the rear along with sound deadening, custom cargo panels, and a new audio set up.

Probably to most people’s dismay I’m going to keep it IFS, but I’d definitely like to either design my own mid/long travel set up or go with a TC kit eventually. I already have my 80 for long trips and rocks, but it absolutely doesn’t have the fun flickable manners that this does. I could see this being tremendous fun out in the dunes where my 80 was the last thing you’d want there.

I’m also itching to dive into a 1UZ motor swap. I’d really like to put a 2uz into my 80, but with my 80 is too nice for it to be my first go around with a motor swap, and I don’t want it down for as long as I could have the 4runner down for. The 4runner, although a different platform and slightly different motor would still be a huge learning experience that I could improve upon for my 80 swap.

Granted my 80 has 415k original miles and I don’t want to pull its motor until it’s done so I will probably finish it off with some big mods and then really dive into this 4runner as time and finances allow.

I figured I’d update this thread after going through it looking for old single cab crawlers. When Covid hit, I knew I’d never get the chance or have the time to throw 100/hrs a week at a project vehicle and with only several months to do all this work before moving out of state, it was a pretty insane challenge.

Blazeland LT up front
Method 704s and 285/75r16s
4.88s and nitro lsd rear with a 4th gen 4runner axle
Ferrari Grigio Scuro paint
Custom outboard shock set up in the rear with 14” travel Kings and Chevy 63s
Custom front and rear bumpers
ADV fiberglass front fenders and hanneman rear flares
Bedlined, sound deadened, and recarpeted interior
Crack free dash
New head and timing chain/guides/rear main
Pretty much every component underneath removed, sandblasted, and refinished down to color coordinating bolts
And a lot more

Man I've drooled over pictures of this thing for a long time now. It's got to be one of the best/cleanest 1st Gen builds I've seen. Do you have any other big mods planned for it?

Not particularly. I used to want to 1uz swap it, but after seeing my friend go through that process, it’s just not really worth it to me for how often I drive it. I’d love to do a coilover LT conversion up front, but also financially justifying that on something that doesn’t really need it is tough.

If I lived somewhere else where I had better access to public lands and offroading, those ideas would make a lot more sense, but here in Kansas City, I’m just enjoying it for what it is.
