Wait now. The full story is forthcoming....can't show my hand just yet. Anyway, it is nearly rust free. There isn't any body rot just a few areas of surface rust--edges of the rear window slider where the rubber was been lost.
Its a killer truck, I don't have $35K invested--I already confronted him on a few indiscretions in the advertisement. Desperite times.....So I have danced with the devil but......more to come on that. You guys go ahead and lay into me for now, redemption is just a phone call away. Enigmatic enough for you? if you don't mind coming to UT, to get one... I heard about one for sale just last night. It is dune, I'm thinking 75 or later. My neighbor (that really isn't into cruisers) told me he saw it the other day for sale. If its the one I'm thinking of it is nice, just repainted. Seems like he said it was for sale at 4800. I'll see if I can find out if you want.
Just PM'd you a couple deals in the local area. One is a 1977 that looks pretty decent. I could also give you a couple names of local cruiser mechanics that might be able to help.
By the way, it seems like everyone else has already beat this horse but 6K for the 40 you described is a bad deal. Especially with the brake and transmission issues. Does it have a SOA or aftermarket lift?
Thats the problem, no one (cept pimp maybe) actually finds their deals, they sort of find you. I paid 6250 for a cruiser with some rust, all stock worn out drivetrain needing new suspension and everything interior. My dad and I yesterday bought a 93 80 with 100k and factory lockers for 6500, which I consider a pretty good deal. We weren't really actively searching, just kind of biding our time, and then one day someone mentioned this cruiser by their house that was for sale. (Thanks Brent!)
If you look too hard too fast, you'll never really find a deal. Take your time and don't be in a rush.
Patience is the key. Unfortunately, patience is a pain in the keester. My buddy spotted an '81 40 w/ less than 80K miles in the Truck trader for $5500. The Trader was a week old so we figured it would be gone but it wasn't. We took off that evening and it was really nice. One owner, some rust under a repaint, but sooooo tight and totally original - runs like a top! This is easily a 9K+ ebay rig so there's no question it's going home with us. After a little negotiating, were driving home the tightest cruiser either of us have ever had the pleasure of being in for under $5K. The next day I found a buyer for his '78 40 (nice ride but rusty and had a few issues) for the exact price he paid for the '81.
Yeah, thats too much money for my rig. What did you expect--its vintage. Still not cracking the seal on whats pending but soon enough. Any help looking for a cruiser would be appreciated. I am in no hurry and I emailed the guy about the other truck and told him its not what I am looking for. I want a 40 with a SOA lift, decent body and I could care less about the interior though I would like a hard top. Mechanically sound 2F or 350sbc is a toss up. I actually like the options a sbc offer given they are cheap to rebuild and easy to modify. Thanks for your input and I'm on the hunt for the best 40 I can afford. Deffinately better to pass on that truck. For a little more money you can get alot more truck. After looking for about a year I paid $7200 for my 69 with SBC, Power steering, SM465, 4wheel discs, solid body, 10k # winch, ARB'S front and rear, Custom bumpers with rear tire carier and cooler/jerry can rack, 6 point cage, 6" lift, 35's... you get the idea. There's better truck for the same or a little more money. Like others here have said, Patience, although sometimes a pain in the ass, is a virtue.
I emailed the guy and told him its not the truck I am looking for. I most likely will have to travel to get the cruiser I want for the price I can afford. Such is life. Keep an eye out. I really want a 40 with SOA, front disc, and decent body. I don't care about the interior so much. Its going to be a fun DD (for short commute) and offroader. I really am not into a purely "stock" truck. Thanks
