New FJ55 owner here. Posted in the owner intro thread, but for those that didn't see it - this FJ55 was a gift from my wife and the person from whom she bought it didn't provide much information on it's history.

One odd thing about this FJ55 is that the roof has no rain gutter. It seems like either the roof was replaced at some point or shaved off? The one thing I do know about the previous owner is that he was a hot rod painter and maybe he thought it was a cleaner line to remove it? I have no idea. Also makes me wonder if that's why they came up with the safari rack set up because i don't know how else you'd mount a rack without drilling...

Just curious if anyone has scene anything like this before.

A couple of years ago I was looking to buy a 55 that was half way through the repaint process. It had a unique external rack and brush guard like yours. I'd bet it's the same truck. I found my email correspondence with a guy named Rod in NC. Unfortunately, I didn't get much info from them, which is why nothing ever came of it.

Too bad they removed the gutter. On the other hand the only rust issue on mine is on the gutter.

I'm fairly confident it's the same truck. It came from NC. Since my wife bought it without me in the process, I don't know much if any of the history. I tried to reach out to the guy but didn't hear anything back so far.

Maybe in the long run the gutter delete will save some rust issues, but I'm thinking about removing the bars and may want to add a conventional rack to match the system I use on my 4Runner. Without the mounting point, I might need to get creative.

Thanks

I just PM'd you the email for that dude if it helps at all. Maybe he can give you some info on it.

Obviously you realize it, but you know you've got a super cool wife when she buys you a vintage landcruiser as a gift.

Thanks and yes I'm very lucky.

It is what it is at this point.

The good new is - you have a Pig!!!

The better news is, you married a super cool woman!!!

Not sure how life gets better than that...

Hopefully they did a good job shaving your Pig (Brazillian?). You'll know in a few years if it starts rusting out at the seam.

@J Mack made a really nice rack with an internal mount system. I would look at his build for inspiration.

I was thinking the same thing, look at @J Mack Pig build thread. He made a cool rack that needs no gutters.

you have any interior pics of your 55? Curious what they ended up doing with it.

Yes. I took a bunch of exterior pics over the weekend, but failed to document the interior very well. I will do that.

I have a couple pics of the dash (below), but not the seats.

It's missing any floor mats or carpet and it has no headliner. The seat upholstery is in decent shape but the padding under the drivers seat will need some upgrading in the near future.

I'm looking to buy a set of decent shape original mats and I need to dive in to some of the threads about headliners to see if I can do that myself or if I should have a local upholstery do it.

Will post more pics maybe in a new thread with updates as I go.

SirBarton,

since you don't have the headliner in yet, now is a good time to spray an anti-rust type converter up in that hard to reach area that the headliner covers. If you had any rust issues in the gutter area (maybe why they shaved her) then you could at the least help stop the spread.

Luckily this pig is staying in sou

Good idea. Thanks

the headliners aren't too bad, but will require removing the cargo windows and windshield to install. SOR has repro fairly reasonably priced BTW, and I know there are a couple guys with nice headliners that they aren't planning on using. looks like the door panels have been reduxn. NICE

Yeah I'm pretty thankful for the wealth of info here. And I've already spent quite a bit over at SOR in just a week.

I'd like to do as much as I can myself, but there are also tons of great upholstery shops here in Los Angeles that are better at these things so I may get some bids.

Well, knowing your limitations is priceless...I have a sewing machine, but paid for upholstery work- the important parts of it- to be done RIGHT. I mean, I want it to look GOOD...
