I'd swear that these have gone up quite a bit form the time I first found out about being able to do this mod several year ago. I should've purchased a bunch back then and resell them for a tidy little profit!!

Have a question that I have not been able to get a satisfactory answer for while searching on line, so I'm seeing what our little club of GX'ers knows.
Now that I have MTS, one of the reasons I wanted it was that I travel from our home in So. Cal. up to Lake Tahoe usually a couple times a year via HWY 395 (by the way, one of the most beautiful drives, just saying...) and usually in winter. When we're going over some of the passes and through Mammoth getting further north, sometimes we're on fully snow covered roads.
So here's my question: Can you use MTS (probably the "Sand"/lowest setting mode, at speed on snowy roads? Let me clarify, when I say snowy roads, I'm talking about already driven on, packed down on a 4 lane highway, not feet or even inches of snow. And highway speeds being probably 55 to 65 mph, not blasting through at 85 or 90 mph.
From what I've found on Google, especially for the Taco's, MTS will only work in 4 Low, and won't even engage unless you're in 4 Low. But also from what I've see, that only seems to apply to Tacomas and not to 4Runners, Landcruisers/LX's or GX's.

Does anyone have any real time experience with MTS on slippery/loose roads at 55 to 65 mph? Is it doable? Is it safe?

Thanks in advance to any/all input!!

No input here on MTS, but 395 is beautiful. Except when you're putting on chains just outside of Bridgeport in -18F weather at night. I didn't know air could hurt, but it does.

MTS sand/mud is available on 4 Hi and 4 Lo. I use that setting on 4-Hi on sand all the time, was just at the beach this past weekend actually.

Whether you should use this setting on the snowy surface you describe I don't know. I would think not, since its more for slower speeds than you mention above. The setting is supposed to allow for some more wheel spin. Since you are travelling at some speed on hard pack surface, I would think you wouldn't want that.

How fast are you going when you're playing around on sand? 30 mph? 40 mph?

I drive like an old man, so prob no more than 10-20

I tried the MTS sand/mud at around 40/50 mph on cape lookout in NC (sand beach) and all I felt was a decreases in the throttle response. There could be some magic going on at the wheels, but I couldn't feel it

according to this nifty schematic, MTS is supposed to modulate both engine output and ATRAC according to chosen terrain. I should try 4Hi without MTS sand next time I'm out on the beach to see if there is any difference. I will say, that I found a greater difference from the type of tire on sand than from MTS. Going from the Michelin defenders to a larger AT tire was very noticeable. I didn't even air at all, and didn't have any issues, even in soft sand and on inclines.

@ozman, I haven't made it out to Cape Lookout yet, but would like to. Do you camp out there or just do a day trip?

I live 4 hours away so I only go if I can camp. its super cool to drive up and down the island and check out the lighthouse, but it can be a little windy some times.

Nice, will have to make it out there at some point.

I forgot to mention that these tires are very quiet! Especially compared to the old, 3/4 worn BFG KM2 M/T's with 50,000+ miles on them!
They are also considerably smoother riding since they're a "C" class tire and not an LT. The sidewalls are far more flexy.
And YES there is rubbing in with the front tires going in/out of driveways. I have had to do some heat gun work with the front tires inner liner near the door.
I works for now, but I have a feeling that when I get to serious wheeling, I'm going to be needing to remove those front fender liners AND hammer down the pinch welds like I did on my 100 series Landcruiser so I can get full compression at lock-to-lock.

One last little thing I was able to do in our awesome 85°F weather here in sunny So. Cal where it NEVER rains!!! I was able to get the grip tape on my sliders. :)

You will love those tires. I have had several sets on service trucks. Their wet traction is awesome. 👍🏼

I went with LR E on this set . I’m going to keep these for mountain trails and the Deer Lease for toughness. I’m going to get another set without the heavy pattern and thick side wall for ride an noise.
I bet you see a mpg gain with your new tires as well as the softer quieter ride.

I can definitely feel the difference in ride quality, but as far as mileage, not sure yet. Since these are a wee bit larger I have to readjust my calculations.
These new tires are 12.8% larger than stock so when I'm doing 55 MPH, my real speed is 62 MPH.
I was used to running an even 10% factor for my speed, now it's a little more difficult. I may even print out a small chart for standard speeds, e.g. 50, 55, 65, 70 MPH's and keep it on my dash.:hmm:
