i just bought a new cam and gear set, all new gaskets etc. everything else is in perfect working order, everything is out except the crank and pistons. I'm going to tro to get her sealed up and back in the truck this weekend marks offroad is getting me a new int/ex manifold so i will have that next week hopefully and be able to start it.

You scrape it off with a gasket scraper (kind of looks like a big wide flatbladed screwdriver). Pistons still in, and raise them up as you scrape around each bore. Try not to get gasket material into the bores (or the oil passages!) and vacuum what you do get into the bores out very carefully. Be careful not to mar the surfaces with the scraper, too.

x2 I've used a putty knife. Sounds similar. A razor blade can be helpful, but be careful not to scratch anything.

The guy who worked on my 427 also carefully scraped and cleaned the tops of the pistons when we changed the heads.

I'd keep the vacuum handy and keep it clean as you progress. Make a vacuum attachment with a short piece of 1/4" tubing and duct tape to get maximum suction around the pistons and to get crap out of oil and coolant passages.

Sure.

If I was that far into it, I would replace the rings and the bearings. You will never be this close again unnless you are doing it.

That is just me though.

X2 and take the block and get it hot tanked.

I would if it hadmore than 5000 miles on the original rebuild. She's pretty damn clean on the inside the outside not so much but I've allready got her lookin better than in those pics.

Here are some pictures of my progress so far everything is cleaned up all i need now is my cam and gear set as well as my gaskets from Marks offroad. SHould have it running next weekend if everything works out ok this week.

Looking good!

On the passenger side, does your block have the bolt holes for the engine lift hook? See pic. If it does, I have a passenger side hook that is yours, just PM me your mailing address. All you will need then is a drivers side hook. The drivers side hook goes under the two rear head bolts and can be left in place.

F135's don't have the engine hook stuff, Mark. :frown:

You could, of course, put one on the driver's side, but there's nothing for the PS.

well i compared it to my existing cam and it looks like they sent the wrong one...There aren't any oil holes for the second cam bearing that supplies oil to my F head. Back to the phones damnit.

Good thing you caught that. The new toyota stock cams have holes for both F and 2 F

yeah this pretty much sucks, I'm trying to see if they will ship me a new one and get it here by Friday, with these old engines it seems like a never ending battle toget the right parts. The Gasket kit I got from Napa is for a 73-75 so I had to order one from Marks Offroad. Pure Frustration is setting in.

If I could offer a little advice.Build the tool.Push the shifter down and turn it.Drop the tranny and assemble them together (after you get your cam and all)Stab that beast in one shot.It is a bitch to align that tranny/fork nightmare and VERY easy to gouge things up.The balance point for dropping the tranny low is a lot easier to fight with on a cherry picker than yelling for help with your feet sticking out and a tranny on your head. My2cents.

thanks for the advice I was contemplating doing that too, will I have to lift it further back on the engine then? I'm not sure where the balance point will be, and How do I disconnect the e brake?
