I know some of you refill your 1lb propane tanks. Anybody use this to do it? $20 at Harbor Freight seemed a little spendy. Any opinions on doing it?

so I take it this one is much less spendy then?

oh, opinions? Yes: I don't think it'll work too well the way it's shown on the label of your gizmo...

those tiny cans cost about 4-5 bux a pop, you could fill almost 20 of them from a 20 pound tank with a total volume of about 18 bux worth of propane. So for a grand total of about 38 bux, you could fill 20 one pound cans instead of paying 80-100 bux for 20 one pound cans. Depending on ones set=up and consumption rate, this might be the best way to go- that is, if you use the one pounders as opposed to a five gallon tank- could save some room in the cargo area. I'm going to get one;)

IIRC There is some tricks to getting them filled 100%. Putting the small cans in the freezer or something along those lines comes to mind.

I also have some interest, can someone with first hand experience provide details.

I use one and have for several years. I've only had one cannister valve not reclose properly that I had to place outside to 'leak out' before trashing it.

Easy to use. Put your empty bottles in the freezer for a little while, then invert your large tank with the coupler on it and screw on your 1lb cannister. It'll fill in less than a minute, basically when you no longer hear the propane filling the small cannister.

It doesn't completely fill the cannisters, based on weight of a brand new one vs a refill, but as stated above, it saves a lot of $$$.

Should I assume the large tank inverted and small upright to fill?

Thanks in advance for the details

Your big tank is upside down so that makes the small tank horizontal. ;) Basically gravity fills the small tank. Freezing the small tank prior to filling basically 'compresses' any propane that might be left in it to allow a more complete fill.

Maybe the picture is upside down :flipoff2:

ummm... with the trees down there (is it a bird? is it a blimp? No, it's superCan...! :) ) I don't think so...

well, on the tech side, I usually try to not exceed the stated net weight on the can, although I can't think of any good reason to do this as long as the can is not 100% filled, but eh, makes me feel better...
Strangely, also, some of my little green cand did show some deformation. Not sure why. But I toss them. Also makes me feel better.

Also, do it outside and think carefully about your stand system so you don't drop he whole shebang, break something, and have a huge propane cloud on your hands, begging for a spark...

I've had one for years, don't use it anymore, but filled alot of little bottles for the cook stove. Worked good, but you're right, it didn't fill them 100%. That was ok with me, just always had a few bottles ready to go. I never did freeze the little bottles. :meh:

^^ That's just wrong!

j/k

I go 5#s too.

Where in the world are you guys buying your 1lb bottles? I've never seen them for over about $2.99, usually about $2.50 a pop.
Not saying refilling ain't cheaper, just amazed ya'll pay $4-5 for them.

tclark,
I sometimes find a 4-pack of them for $14-15. Singles run $4-6 depending on time of year, store, etc. I stocked up this fall when a grocery store had a ton of them on the clearance rack for $2 each. It'd probably take me 2-3 years to pay off the initial investment of this device based on my low usage.
