Project Snowball: my 4runner is overheated and is leaking coolant

finally got everything apart. the electrical connectors and fuel lines were a PITA.

Think i'm going to disassemble the Head and give it a thorough cleaning. First time doing anything like this.
should be fun. Any special tools needed besides a Valve Spring Compressor? Going to take advantage of the Advanced Auto loaner tools tomorrow. My headgasket kit came with new seals and gaskets for everything in there, so i may as well take advantage.
My headgasket was looking nasty too.
Funny thing is that my plastic timing chain guides were perfectly fine...until i snapped them both when taking the head off.

If you've got the head off it needs to go to a machine shop. All those years of heating and cooling have warped it some. Now that you've released the tension on the head bolts it's probably not flat. It would suck to put everything back together and have a leak because the gasket didn't seal or the head has a crack somewhere. The 22RE heads had issues with the coolant eroding through into the exhaust passage if the ground strap wasn't on the head. Something you might want to check for.

man, i guess the broken water pump was a blessing in disguise(so far at least).
Upon further inspection i saw some hair-line cracks in the coolant passageway on the timing cover where the timing chain had worn its way almost all the way through. After i spent all that time cleaning it up.
Maybe i'll post some pics tomorrow of what my kitchen looks like right now with everything taken apart.

Prob a home renovation after the 22re rebuild.
I'm suprised I haven't gotten talked to yet...
Maybe ill Just do other stuff on the 4runner to keep me busy.

Maybe install those 4.88s on it. Think 30" tires will suck hardcore with that gearing? :-) I have the 4.10s or 4.30s on it now I Think.
Prob going to put that sr5 gauge cluster in there soon too.

Sam, I'm catching up to you!

I have the '88 Isuzu Trooper in the garage, and the head, intake, exhaust manifold are removed--getting prepped to go to the machine shop.

Next (this weekend) I will pull the bottom end, and prep the replacement bottom end while the head is getting the once-over with machinists.

congrats.
Next week is my spring break and i got my new timing cover in the mail today. Hopefully i'll have it back up running better than before soon. My EGR was a solid mass of carbon, now it flows free.
Right now i'm dying of midterms and this weekend i get to tag along my sis's car shopping. Sold her fubar'd acura cl last week at night, 20min after the CraigsList ad was listed. Was rolling heavy both hands, crazy s***.

I spent a few days cleaning the grime off of the head. turned from black to shiny silver! My valves and guides look to be good. I'll put the new valve seals on this weekend and reassemble the head if the head measures flat enough.
what machine shop did you use for your head? Just in case i need my head milled flat. how much are they charging for a mill?

I've been debating putting in my 4.88s diffs, but i don't have my 33/10.5/15s yet. thinking on the bfg km2 and am pricing them out. although i might try and drive around on my 30/9.5/15s with that. I foresee that sucking pretty bad though. also debating moving to a 16"rim to find a greater availability of tall skinnies. Also want a rim and tire that i can swap inbetween the 4runner and cruiser. They require different backspacing, so i might need wheel spacers. Dunno how i feel about that. Maybe a set of ATs or street tires and MTs. I cant drive them both at the same time...
If anyone knows a deal please let me know.

I might slap on my 32/11.5/15s from the cruiser on the 4runner, but i think i'll need to lift the rear or chop the rear wheel wells to fit the width.
I have the spring packs Tom gave me to make my custom pack, but i'd like to get my DD, the camry, back from my sister before i purposefully make the 4runner inoperable.
There is a 4.7 transfer case gear kit i'm looking at from the richmond area too.
I got my tax money back, and i'm trying hard not to blow it all on the TOYs.
I'll prob do a dual t-case soon enough too. No SAS though, sticking with the IFS. I like the improved ride on washboard roads.

Still need to get some m6 studs and bolts for the water pump too.

fun fun:clap::bang:

oh yea, and i decided on paint for the 40...MULTICAM.
figure i'll need to repaint it every 4-5years anyway. may as well have some fun with it.

I've been checking Costco online every now and then, but no KM2s are listed in that size. I'll prob have to drag myself to the physical store and inquire.

Yea, the 4runner really needs some lower gearing to be a bit safer. I'm not a fan of obstacles on the steep slopes.

I'm looking at desertrat.com with a tire and wheel package deal. But plan on looking at local deals when my taxes comes in.

looks like they're $209 each plus shipping and install for my size tire.

Pichures.

keeping it organized. I had a roll of rosin paper that worked pretty well as a sheet to put the parts down on. easier than cardboard.

Parts room...ahem...Living room. :hhmm:

Valve cover. Red high temp engine paint. Likely going to paint the "TOYOTA" black eventually. maybe alternating colors. i dunno.

Top half of intake manifold. Yes i did paint the throttle-body separately. Used hammerite black/grey on the brackets.

EGR. this had 1/4" of carbon on the inside of both ends. the vacuum port was completely blocked. A drill bit and purple power fixed that. everything rinsed with soap and water of course.

The source of Project Snowball. Damn snapped M6 for the water pump.
after an hour of progressively drilling, a square bolt extractor, and some swearing i got it out.

Looking closer
See those discolored parallel lines? Those are cracks.
IMG_20120312_143341.jpg

Back view of the famous timing chain rub. some similar parallel lines towards the bottom.

Shiny and clean. 2days of scrubbing with soap and water. Well, clean enough. Nylon bristle brush only. Cleaning the carbon out of the chamber was gnarly. I dunno how to port/polish so i'm not f'n with that.
IMG_20120312_143703.jpg

Before pic with the lower part of the intake manifold still on. Damn hidden allen bolt near the thermostat housing.

Thank you Mossman. Timing chain kit.

Factory 4.88s . Who the hell buys gears before they get tires? The aussie locker will be coming soon. :)

New tools. Wish i had this years ago. $11 at advanced auto. Flexy shaft with magnet. Heavy duty.
IMG_20120312_143732.jpg

Also used an overhead valve spring compressor. I had rented a much nicer tool that looked like a giant spring loaded c-clamp, but it didn't work worth a damn. the $20 tool worked like a champ.

and just for the hell of it. Look what i picked up for the fj40

Original Confer.

I just sent my fuel injectors off to be cleaned and repaired. Hopefully get them back by the end of the week. Lots of great reviews on Yotatech.Fuel Injector Cleaning and Testing

Picked up a new fuel filter, sr5 oil pressure sending unit for my gauge cluster swap, and some other misc parts.

Also picked up an end tap for the head bolts.
The heavy duty extended range razor-blade scraper is awesome. Some permetex gasket softener too. Wish i had those when i started trying to remove the old gaskets.

I'm going to paint a few more things then start the reassembly in the next couple days.

Anyone ever mess with the silicone vacuum lines? I need to replace a few rubber ones and was thinking about doing a full switch.

That's it for now...
