work party

I haven't taken time to read the whole thread again, but when is the workparty? I won't make the 45 run this year due to the house remodel, but might be able to spare a day or 2 for the work party.

July 12-13th. Hope you can make it.

Went over to Gene's last night and dropped off the cherry picker that we'll be using to pull the motor once we test it out. Had another interesting piece of karma happen by the by.

Three and a half years ago I had my gas tank in my 45 soldered up at a radiator shop in Azusa. The day I picked mine up, I dropped off Gene's LV tank to have it checked out before I fired up his engine with the rebuilt carb at my shop. Haven't been back to that shop in three and a half years...............until last week!

Dropped off my 45 tank to have it soldered again. As I was driving from there to the brake booster rebuilder, I said to myself 'last time I drove down this stretch of highway, I had just picked up my 45 tank and dropped off Gene's. So yesterday, guess what Gene asked me? Yep, you guessed it.

Now I've got Gene's tank in the back of the 45 to drop off when I pick up my tank. Deja vu all over again.

:hippie:

i have a spare 45LV tank as well but it needs some work. just in case gene's in really bad shape..........

btw, can you guys get the flywheel resurfaced? i have a new clutch kit here for the LV. just make sure it's a flat 2F flywheel and not the early disched unit but you already knew that.........

Update. Spent 4 hours out at Gene's pulling the old driveshafts, t&tcase, prepping and firing the motor. Engine seems to be ok, but has a little thump in the bottom end we could not identify.

Since the oil pan has a dent in it and is weeping a little at the skidplate anyways, the plan is to find a donor 2F oil pan and pull the old one for a look-see sometime between now and the work party.

In the daylight, it was easy to see that the brake failure was caused by the driver's side rubber hose being rubbed thru against the inside of the tire. We could see bubbles coming out of the hose when we pulled on it.:frown: It was a replacement hose that did not have the stock tension spring. There was another spring on the hose, but apparantly it did not do what it needed to.

I walked over to my truck, looked at my driver's side hose, and all I could say was.............NEXT!

Gene took pics.

Georg,
I can bring a surfaced flywheel. I have a pair of the 2F ones, and can get it surfaced for the working party...

Thanks Brett. I would hold off for now though. We took a look at Gene's clutch yesterday, and it still looks basically new. Early style. Since he actually wheels the truck, and plans to continue to do so, we both favor the extra rotating mass of the earlier clutches.

:)

I noticed the door mirror bit it in the roll. I will be sending two out to Gene when I can get to the post office. They are black and in pretty nice shape. I am focused on some of the crap that is above and beyond all the mechanical stuff you guys will be doing.
Been collecting funds to get the real crucial piece to the truck that was destroyed in the crash. Hope to have money soon and will be sure to have it ordered in time. It is a bit like icing on the cake.

By the way, what are the plans for the body? I have a semi local source that can put specific colors in rattle cans. Might be a great way to get a nice paint job done piece by piece.. Just a thought.

Guys, old metal rules. I know many of you hate looking at the pictures... I do as well... but new steel... and Gene would be in ICU and we would have a prayer thread going on.

Nothing wrong with prayer threads, but I'm so glad that instead of that we have a rebuild fj35 thread going.

Here's to old steel!!!

That's exactly what the CHP officer said when closely looking at my wagon. Except instead of ICU he said I would have been DOA. And I'm really glad it's not a prayer thread too. Thanks Mikesta.

Just found this thread, great thing you guys are doing. Are you still taking donations? I dont have much but I can send some. Any pics of the progress?

Glad your ok Gene..

Just pulling this up for a friend. Here's all that's left of this LV...
Original LV .webp

Gene,
You should save what's left for a trailer project. Everyone needs a camping or utility trailer made out of a Cruiser. Just a thought.

Great thot John, but.....the remaining sheet is slowly being snipped as we prepare grafts for the new LV, and the frame, especially at the rear spring hangers, is TOAST.

Once we see how the left quarter graft turns out, we're gonna try the rear piece under the tailgate. Gene's also daydreaming about a right quarter graft, but we'll just have to wait and see on that.

Wouldn't be at all surprised if he cut it out and put it off to the side for another rainy day project tho. So, we're basically taking 'recycling' to the next level.
