I am thinking if the 80 steering column can be used everything; Ignition switch, headlight switch, cruise control (not that I need this), horn, directionals, high/low beams, wipers, washers, are all wired to work with the 80's wiring harness, which I will try to retain because it will interface with the 1FZFE ECU and automatic transmission. I am hoping to keep the wiring as plug and play as possible and only eliminate those things I don't need. Not sure how the gauge cluster will be modified.

I always forget, that your J79 body is emty...
running the J7 gauges with the J8 inputs should work, at least it did with J8->J4. I think the speed signal can be corrected with kits from Toyota.
We changed the Diesel 24V starter system to 12V and had to reverse the polarity of the J4 wipermotor to be + operated
.....no problem for you.

what about the airbags? the late 80tys got airbags and registration (in Germany) would have failed not using them again in the new body...that was one of the reasons for me to use one of the year 1993 without airbags..

to make the 80 column work you are at least going to have to devise and adapter plate so it will bolt in. The monting on the fire wall is different. I don't have the two to lay side by side and compare...I will soon and will let you know. I don't need any of the 80 series electronics so the 70 column is much easier for me.
More pics coming soon...

You're lucky Swamprunner that you can use the 75 series column. The only reason I would try to use the 80's column is so all the 80's wires are plug and play for the switches associated with the steering column. Or maybe I could just adapt the ignition, directionals/wiper/high and low beam from the 80's column to a 75 series column. I look forward to your pictures.

If I promised a combo plate from High Cotton BBQ, would you post pictures straight-on, down the side of the truck from the front and the rear showing how much the tires stick out with that setup? Bonus points for shots including tape measure for reference and for specific info on the rims and backspacing (add chess pie to the combo plate?). Pretty please?

Thanks,
Duke

Hmm Duke...how do you know where I live....I guess with google you can pretty much stalk anything/body you want these days. The funny thing is I live so close to High Cotton I can actually smell the BBQ cooking in the mornings. Also funny that I love BBQ so pics will be in the next post. I didn't get any of the exact angle you are looking for but they shoud suffice for now. I will get better ones this weekend when I may have a few spare minutes. I guess you are building one of the rigs also? Sorry no pics with a tape and level...How was I gonna take the picture while holding the tape and the level and get a picture that actually shows the measurement?

Soenke...I have to be self sufficient...I can't afford to pay someone to do the work for me...but even if I had $50k to drop on one of these trucks I would still build it myself. Also...I live in the middle of no where so its just easier to do everything myself.

Ok...I finally got a few pics depicting the axle width. The tires/rims are from a 4runner 255's on a 7 inch rim. I'm not positive on the backspacing but I believe its 4" or 4.5"

I stuck a level next to the tire and measured to the bed...it was about 1.25-1.5" Not enough for me to worry about. For those that like flares that should solve the problem.

On the front you can tell there is no tire really sticking out past the fender.

Now I need some opinions on the sliders pictured...I can't remember what they were built for...I think an extra cab hilux.
I don't know if I really like them or not. I guess they look ok and the length is about right. The price was too. So I most likely will use them so I don't have to build another set.

Have you thought about using OEM 80 series steelies and 7x series manual hubs as well to make this a more authentic 7x series in a traditional manner?

Love the build!

71...I could move them forward a couple inches. I just kinda threw them on the jack stand to see what they would look like. Where I live I doubt the will seem much abuse from the rocks....a few wheeling trips a year maybe where they are actually used as rock sliders. The rest of the time they will merely be steps.

Beno...I'm definitely going part time with aisin hubs. As far as rims/tires are concerned I'm undecided. I just threw this set on there b/c they were the smallest set of tires I had on 16" rims. I will definitely be running at least 305's if not 315's. With the cumming revving out at 2800- 3200 and 4.11 gears the bigger the tire the better. I have a dozen sets of tires on toyota rims behind the shop but nothing that looks that good/works on this rig. I'm afraid I'm going to have to break down and at least buy a new set of tires.

Thanks for the props:cheers:

The 80 series steel wheel is available in the US as are the 7x series Aisin manual hubs with the correct scallops for the hubs.

They are not cheap, but they are beautiful. Here are the 80 series steelies with the 7x Aisins on my rig (with part time conversion).

If you are using 4/1994 or later front end, you are going to have to manipulate the birfs to make Aisin's work--either 60/2 series or 7x series.

Thanks Swamp --

I'm prepared to pay up! Not stalking you, just saw some location clues in random previous posts of yours and then completely guessed on the restaurant from a vague familiarity with that part of the Outer Banks. Picked it because I have quite an affinity for Eastern NC barbeque. I think I can smell it, too.

Also many family ties to the Raleigh area, school ties to the Charlotte area and my folks live in Morehead -- a part of the OBX that I know quite well. I get there a few times a year and have been going there, literally, since birth.

I was thinking you might get someone to hold the tape or take the picture while you held it, but I'll take what I can get.

Very much appreciate the intel and the pics, including the ones to come.

i like the sliders, looks clean and simple.
i also like the looks with the skinny rims.

damn nice build.

Beno...I'm trying to save money where I can and use what I already have. I have some 60/mini truck hubs that I will rebuild and use. I will most likely use alloy wheels and powder coat them black or grey. I have a bunch of them laying around so I feel as should use them to keep the build cost down.
I know I will have to machine the ring in the birf for the c clip or I might just trade for the earlier ones.

Duke...good job on the intel. I knew you had to know the area pretty well to know where High Cotton was. I love eastern NC BBQ also. High Cotton is ok but there's really no place on the outer banks that has true eastern NC BBQ...anybody that is cooking on gas and not charcoal/wood should really not call it BBQ. I usually cook several pigs a year to get my fix...or I go inland b/c there are a few good places that way. I love it Down East towards Morehead...it reminds me of what it used to be like up here before it was built up. I was lucky enough to grow up here when the place was pristine. Next time your in NC feel free to swing by for some beers and BBQ.

Thanks for the kind words Wayne...I'm pretty sure I'm gonna use those sliders. I just have to decide whether I wan't to make them bolt on or weld on.

Would 4.56 be a better choice for diff ratio?

gotoy...using a lower gear ration would normally work for running bigger tires but the engine I'm using doesn't rev very high so I'm hoping 4:11's will work out just right with a bit oversized tires.

OK...had a few spare hours this weekend so I got you guys some money shots that you've been asking for. Sorry they are with from a phone but my camera has gone walk about.

Motor mounts showed up this week...they are designed for the b3.3 in a 79 series...I thought the might work in the 80...I was wrong. They are close but no cigar. I don't have a 79 series frame to refer to so if anyone can chime in I'd appreciate it. The only thing I can't figure out with the mounts is that the DS mountis 3/4" -1" lower than the PS mount. Hopefully the pics will illustrate this. The other hickup is that apparently the 79 frame is about an inch narrower than the 80 frame so the engine is offset about 1/2"-3/4"

OH and the biggest problem with the mounts is that the turbo doesn't clearence the hood:bang:. When I bought these the company failed to tell me they had to cut a hole in the hood to clearance the turbo.

Oh well...I spent $80 on the mounts knowing it was to good to be true and it was. Looks like I will be designing some new mounts as it would probably be easier than making these work. The oil pan clearance looks ok and I plan on running a 2" lift so I most likely will lower the engine so the turbo will fit under the hood. The only other option is trying to flip the turbo so it is a low mount.

Too much thinking for one day...time for some

A few more...notice the difference in the motor mounts....on the ds the angle part is approx 3/4 lower....not sure why.
