Updates:

I finally got some free time and have worked on the truck a bit.

I finally got the adapters in for the engine. To say the least I'm not thrilled with Phoenix Castings. Promised me many different things then never came thru. Finally got the alternative adapters I needed in stock. The arrived the other day and I bolted them up and wasn't to impressed. For $500 I would expect every bolt hole on the bellhousing to line up. Wrong. There are 4 bolt holes that aren't even drill tap. Called them out on it and there response was that I just need to drill them out myself for my particular bellhousing. I won't be using them again.

It all bolted up enough for a mock up so I threw it in the truck and Amazingly enough the shifters ended up in the right spot using the stock crossmember.

Now I just have to redo my engine mounts and I will be ready to attempt a test drive. Well maybe not quite...still need a radiator and I guess I should hook up the brakes.

I also figured out what fuel tanks I'm using.
Will be using the stock 80 series tank in the front. Its spun 180 from its stock location but it works and the filler neck won't be to bad to route.
For the rear tank I'm using a bj74 tank. It fits nicely....looks almost like the factory sub tank. Someone told me it would actually bolt into a factory 79 series. I will have to make mounts being as I'm using an 80 frame.

Sliders are ready to be welded on also.

I'm happy to see some progress even if it is small. Still have a long way to go.

Will get some more pictures up soon.

cool
that 70 series shorty tank is what i am going to use as a second tank in my 75 series pickup...

yeah it fits nicely...the filler neck even lines up spot on.
I'm sure this has been discussed before but why are there so many pipes coming out of the shorty tank?
Seems like a couple of them are redundant.

Does anybody have any spare 70 shorty fuel tank straps laying around? I could use them if anyone does.

rainy day bs around here today. Ordered some parts and going to buy some steel for things I need to build on this truck
Hope to have the engine mounts done this weekend. Just gotta convince my friend to punch some holes for me.

Looking at how stuff bolts to the fire wall right now...pedals, brake booster, clutch master. I have pedals from a 75 and a 70. They don't exactly fit perfect. Close but it looks like its gonna be a pita.
As far as the clutch master...how exactly does this bolt up. It doesn't look like any I've seen before...no hole in the fire wall? What am I missing?

ok heres a couple pics. The steering column and brake booster/pedal line up...I just have to drill out the holes a bit larger for the brake pedal.

The clutch pedal and master cyl that I have don't work with this firewall. The pedal is good but the proper hole isn't there. DId the 79 series come with a clutch booster?

small update. Got the engine mounts basically finished. The are tacked together and the engine is sitting in the truck. I'm not going to weld them up until I get the springs I'm using installed. Which leads to this question I've been asking myself for a while. What springs do I use? I was thinking j springs in the front and mediums in the rear. The front sits about 1.5" lower than the rear of the truck. I don't plan on hauling that many heavy loads with the truck. There will also be a custom bumper and winch up front. All you 80 guys feel free to chime in here. I also thought about running ironman b springs b/c they are cheaper and probably just as go if not better them ome.

I'm also planning on reworking the shock mounts and running bilstein 7100's with 12" of travel. I know that is a bit much but I think I can make it work. I have a brand new set collecting dust in the shop so I want to put them to use. So the longer springs will help in this sense.

As it sits now the diff is to close for comfort to the oil pan. The diff is offset to the side of the oil pan but on full stuff it looks as though it will hit.

So the more room the merrier I guess. If I use j springs I'm hoping all I will have to do is caster correction.

Yea I couldn't believe how many lines there are on my tank... Considering there is no return line all it needs is a vent in my mind... but whatever...

Yooper,
I removed my post so as not to cause this thread to be deleted as others have been due to the child like ramblings. sorry if i caused any grief for you by letting you know i could help you out if need be. :whoops:

What? This is my first post in this thread, what the heck are you talking about?

Well I guess the chit chat got cleaned up...i found it kinda entertaining but i guess the mods didn't.

I worked on mounting the main fuel tank today. For some reason I decided not to put the truck on the lift and crawled around on the concrete all afternoon. Many beers needed tonight. For those that go down this same path the stock 80 tank will work and if you get creative so will the straps. I will post some pics up when I get it completed. FWIW...figuring out how to mount the tank was the biggest pain in the ass so far with this whole project.

Swamprunner, quick question: Next time you are under there, can you stare at (or take a pict) of the stock fuel tank location under the cab.
I'm curious how difficult it will be to shift my main tank back about 1-2". If the tank and body are sort of... molded... to each other, that would prove difficult.
My HZJ79 has a marlin crawler, and the transfer case-to-fuel tank clearance is about .5mm.

Are you using the 70 series tank or the 80 series tank. I couldn't get the 70 series tank to fit b/t the 80 series frame rails so I used the 80 tank. There is plenty of room for adjustment on the 80 tank. I mounted it in a fashion that allows for a slight bit of adjustment. If you're using the 70 series tank it bolts directly to the bottom of the cab with straps. You would have to you reconfigure the mounting bracketry in order to move the tank aft.

yes, stock tank stock location. I could handle modifying the mounting brackets... I guess my question was more about the shape of the cab; whether it would prevent my from moving the tank. Though, after posting this... I realize what a difficult question I'm asking since you don't have a stock tank to look at.

No worries.

Did you figure out the pedals issue? I will say... on mine, the pedals were from a 2002, and while they bolted up ok, I had to really modify them to put the actual pedal part in the correct location for my feet.

Somebody who know the 70 series firewalls please chime in...I need to no whether the brake pedal bucket mounts flush to the firewall or does it sit off the firewall about 3/4" due to the four sleeve/spacers on the back of the bucket. Or do these sleeves go thru the firewall and then space the brake booster off the firewall? I know a picture is worth 1000 words but I my camera batt is dead.
