Proffitt's Cruiser in Colorado was/is selling them. They imported a small number from the Middle East, Jordan to be specific. My body was $7000.00 plus I paid another $900 to have it shipped from Colorado to the East Coast on an 18 Wheeler.

Not a cheap project, but I have always wanted a Landcruiser pick-up. And this will be very different from anything else in the States. We will be a small number on the road.

$7K is just the cabin and tray. What about the engine, the tranny and axle?? Is it inclusive?? Why not get the whole HZJ79, I mean without dismantled it. thanks:p

$7000.00 is cab and bed only, then you mount it on your choice of frame and running gear. The options are a 60 or 62 series or an 80 series like swamprunner is doing. The big reason for doing this is because it is the only way you can have a 79 series in the US. They cannot be imported into the United States. The only Landcruiser pick-ups that we have in the US were the FJ45 series.

With this figure, I would say that is not cheap at all. Then where is the frame has gone to??? Your can get the original 79 frame( if possible) then erase the chassis number away, put on a 80 series chassis number on the 79 frame. You get what I mean?;p

You can get a new frame for 4-5k if you want to go that route. Or you can buy a mine truck and use that rolling chassis. Some are going that route. These bodies are the left overs from armored vehicles.

I'm know this isn't a cheap build...but the body was the most expensive part of my build. I thought long and hard before I pulled the trigger on buying one. I'm not made of money so it was a big purchase for me .

I'm not sure what the cruiser market is like in malaysia but if you can find a 2010 79 series body with the frame and running gear for $7K....I will gladly buy every one. I will be over that way next month so line them up for me:)

Custom building a truck and using different vins is one thing....deliberately changing vins is a good way to get yourself locked up.

:) 2010? no chance.

Like Swamprunner, I am putting the 79 series body on an 80 series frame that I already own with complete engine, tranmission, transfercase, axles, etc. so the cost is a bit more reasonable. Agree, altering VIN numbers is a sure fire way, in the states anyway, of having the DMV confiscate your truck. I will be looking to register mine as a re-bodied 80 series. Time will tell how difficult this will be, but I will not be messing with the VIN, registration or title.

Swamprunner, so when you get to the point of registering it, what VIN do you use?
The frame of the 80 and the engine number both? Just curious...

I'm sure every state has it's own rules and regulations. I will be calling the Massachusetts DMV tomorrow to ask what their rules are. One good thing with the 79 series is that all the glass is DOT glass. Not sure what other issues would be addressed? Maybe airbags? Hopefully just driver if any? Side door impact protection?

If using a FZJ80 as a donor with driver's and passenger's airbags I wonder if these would be required on the 79 build? If so, this may be an issue. I bet we could adapt the FZJ80 steering column and steering wheel with airbag, but adapting the passengers bag would probably be a show stopper.

I bet a lot depends on what frame and original vehicle you put the body on. A donor 1988 FJ62 frame, axles, and 3FE as a base would have different rules than a 1996 FZJ80 frame, axles, and 1FZ motor.

I'm in NC and have two different route I can take. In NC they care more about the frame vin# than the body. You could build a plywood box on top of an 80 frame and the still would consider it an fzj80. I might just be able to transfer the 80 title over to my name and be done with it. If that doesn't work I can go the custom built vehicle route. I've done this once before in the past and they just assign a completely new vin # to the truck. It will ultimately depend on what the dmv inspector says. I asked about this briefly before I undertook this project. He assured me that one way or the other it would be no problem getting a legal title for the truck. I take everything they say with a grain of salt though.

In Malaysia, the latest model for Landcruiser pick up is HZJ79 and ended in 2002. There was the newest model that we have. 2010 spec, no way we can get it. Anyway, do enjoy your process of do it and remember to keep us update with your progress. :p

If you get the body and bits for 7k a rolling 80 series chassis and drivetrain for a few g , fabrication work is done by your self or mates and dash parts then licencing I'm sure you will have a brand newish/ reasonably new ute for cheaper than what a fzj79 2010 model/ would have cost and it's fully coiled

Wong...I was just joking about the 79 series in Malaysia. I know you can buy them anywhere for 7k. that was the point I was trying to make.

Clint79...you are thinking like I am. I don't know exactly what this build is gonna cost me.I know I have a round about budget for it. I know when its all said and done it will be far cheaper than buying a new one from Toyota for $40-$50k. And thats really a mute point b/c you cant buy them here. I know what Proffitts is charging to build them and I'm confident I will have some equity in mine if I ever want to sell it. I've already had a few "if you ever want to sell this" from some people I know. Of coarse my response is..."everything is for sale if the price is right"
On another note...I will be in Indonesia next month. There is an outside chance I will hop over to WA if time allows. If I do can I check out your turbo 1fz if I buy the beers?

is the 80 series frame more desirable than a 60/62 frame?

Let's put it this way:

A new 2011 GRJ7x or a VDJ7x or a HZJ7x is going to run you $50-60K out the door of a dealership in Sydney or Brisbane.

Shipping to US: Another $2-4K.

Converting the necessary parts of the vehicle to US DOT spec: another $45-50K.

So for about $110K you can have a new one (conservative figure)

For about $30K you can build your own or have Jeremiah build it for you.

The logic (and illogic) is apparent.

What vehicle can you buy in the US for $30K that will compare to a 7x series rig? None.

What Toyota vehicle can you buy in the US for $30K that compares to a 7x series rig? None.

Only issue with builds like this is that you can't finance it. You gotta have the cash up front.

The prices seem about right , I would think you could build the cruiser for under 30k but I guess it does depends on the avl of cruiser parts and how much fabrication you do your self ,
note .. Aus doesn't get the grj or hzj no more just vdj they start around 56k and sky rocket up from there

Last month there was a '95 for sale. Asking price was 55-60kRM...or 20kUSD...approx.

Just catching up on this and congrats. I shortened an 80 frame to fit under a 55. Here is the super long thread. I am doing a 4BT into mine.
https://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-iron-...5-biodiesel-piggie-2-buildup-sad-sad-day.html

I followed this sick FJ45 for about a week over 1500 miles last spring with its B3.3 and the truck as awesome. Also had tons of pep, only second to the powerstroke I was in out of the 8 vehicles on the trip, never skipped a beat. 320 ft.lbs of torque, particularly in a diesel, is a lot... I'm also a big fan of the R151F as well and found it's the synchros have a ton of hard miles that wear, and they usually hold up well.

For me the hardest part was the body work. Starting with a sick, clean 79 series is like a dream come true...
