Last month there was a '95 for sale. Asking price was 55-60kRM...or 20kUSD...approx.

95 model is HZJ75, not HZJ79. I think we can't find any 79 on West Malaysia. 79 is only available on East Malaysia( Sabah and Sarawak) . I might be wrong.

One of the UMW supplied pick up units.

I've been looking into the registration process here in Massachusetts and it looks doable, but not easy. The truck may be treated as a "Specially-constructed vehicle" and a whole new Vin assigned by the State Police Salvage Title Unit. The other term thrown out there by the RMV was "reconstructed title" which means the vehicle had a prior salvage title and was rebuilt. I do not want this because it was not a totalled vehicle.

It still may have to have air bags, or possibly a waiver issued. ARGH. I wonder how hard it would be or if it would even be possbile to build a custom dash in the 79 cab using the FZJ80 dash with the passenger's airbad and vin ... Driver's side may not be as hard if the 80 series steering column can be used. Did any of the later year 75 series come with airbags?

Swamprunner, what are your concerns, if any, about the truck needing airbags? This was one of the selling points of using the older 62 series frame as those VIN numbers would not require airbags.

Then the insurance company would have to be notified of the body change and fight that battle.

The 09,10 7x series with the latest dash in Aus come out with airbags, it might be a expensive way to go but if you need air bags it could possibley be done

The other issue, and this too may vary from state to state is any part put into the vehicle will need a receipt or some other way to prove it wasn't stolen. I think I'll wait and see what the authorities have to say when I talk to them in person. Or maybe I have to move to another state to realize my dream cruiser.

long day in the shop...no progress on the 79 although a couple boxes of dash parts showed up...spent 12 hours messing with a 2H. I just gained access to a coating system that seems pretty cool...google "techline coatings". I spent the day testing many of the different products. I will post up a different thread about this stuff b/c I feel it could be something worth while.

Will post up some thougths tomorrow after some rest and my head clears up after breathing to many chemicals.

Sounds good mate , be sure to post up progress and pics

Definitely post it up and include a link to it within this thread. Mainly b/c one of the first questions I thought up when you spliced in the new frame section was "OK, now how's he going to seal up that steel on the inside to prevent rust?". Maybe it's just me but I know I thought just that once we got done burning in the welds for my frame plates for the 4Runner's sliders.

Also, IIRC be wary with some states and their "Custom/Specially Constructed Vehicle" regulations. There are states where they assign the most current DOT laws to the project, as-in you would face 2011, 2012, ... laws instead of when the frame or body was made.

$7000.00 is cab and bed only, then you mount it on your choice of frame and running gear. The options are a 60 or 62 series or an 80 series like swamprunner is doing. The big reason for doing this is because it is the only way you can have a 79 series in the US. They cannot be imported into the United States. The only Landcruiser pick-ups that we have in the US were the FJ45 series.

What is price tag for just the bed only?? I'm interested with in looking for one. Thanks;)

i like the build, love the look of the 79 on the 80 chassis.
congrats.

R151 is a weaker tranny but seems to stand up to my abuse satisfactory.
good luck with the rest of the build.

clint/beno...30 seems to be the middle of the road...I heard 45 for top of the line...of coarse the sky is the limit if you have deep pockets

andre...glad to hear your input on the b3.3...I think with enough tweaking it will be fine. Your also the first one who said anything positive about the r151. My buddy is an engineer for cummins and loves this engine. It was designed for industrial application that see an 80% duty cycle...he claims they probably see about 20% duty cycle in a truck. Hes a smart guy and a good old boy not some uptown engineer...i trust his knowledge.
Shortening the frame would be a bit more interesting...depending on how much the track with would be different...I will read thru your thread when I get a chance...any idea what page the frame stuff is on?

david...correct me if I'm wrong but in MA you don't even have to have a title for a vehicle if its older than 15yrs. I'm not to worried about the dmv. I've done this in the past and had no issues. As far as using the 80 dash and airbags....good luck. To start with its wider and way bigger. Anything is possible I guess but the mount of time spent on it would be crazy. Also getting the stock 80 harness behind 70 dash in gonna be a lot of fun.

Norcal... once all the mock up is done I'm tearing it all back down and sending the frame to the sandblaster then the powder coater...they should be able to get the the inside of the extencion piece. in NC the regs on specialty vehicles isn't too strict. You don't have to meet 2011 standards.

wong I have know idea on the price of the bed...but I know proffitts was talking about doing a 4 door cab which requires to cabs...so the may have an extra bed?

wayne...thanks for the compliments...I have three r151's so I'll have a couple spares when/if I ever kill the first one. i still owe ya a beer over our mixup. Your troopie build is looking good also.

Will post up so me pics tomorrow...i got to get a 2H put back together by the end of the weekend. Will also post some pics of the techline coating along with more details

one question hopefully one of you can answer....can you use a 75 series fuel tank in a 79. I've looked at the epc diagrams and I know they are different but will the still bolt up?

i feel that is you don't hammer on the R151 it will hold up pretty well.
i like the R141 i have in my bush D/D but only with the 35s and 36s, anything smaller than that and highway speeds and fuel economy suffer.
if you could mate the R141 with the O/D of the R151 then that would be a sweet setup.

many problems with the R151 even with cars running only 235/85 and no turbo, no abuse,... just travelling Cruisers...( we havent had any problems with our HZJ78 on 255/100 ..maybe just lucky.. )

Buschtaxi.net • Getriebedefekt HZJ78

just one of many threads dealing with this issue...

Swamprunner,
Yeah, I never thought about a vehicle over 15 years old not needing a title. I will wait and see what the RMV says when I go and talk with the state police title unit next week.

Another question, you don't think an 80 wiring harness will fit behind the 79 dash? I was hoping to use the 80 harness with the 80 steering column to keep everything plug and play as much a possible?

In regards to possibly using the 80 harness, my intent was to strip the stock harness of anything I would not be using on the 79, like power windows, door locks, door speakers (front and rear), power mirrors, sunroof, rear window heater, washer and wiper, power antenna, mid and rear dome lights, etc... I wonder if this would help with fitting the harness under the 79 dash?

Will you be using a 75 series steering column and steering wheel?
What master cylinder?
Wiper motor and linkage?

you can get rid of most wires...we used the 80 harness first, and it fits in a J4 dash after cutting out all the fancy electric comfort stuff!
But we did it over again to reduce electric confusion as much as possible. It would have been a lot less complicated to start with a selfmade harness in the fist place...

We used the 80 steering column, but I have seen mixtures of J4 and J6 and J8 too (using a J4 body)

I'm on the same line of thought as wayne...if you don't hammer the r151 it will survive for a good while. I have had two mini trucks with the turbo/r151 setup. I tweaked the motor in the one and it had quite a bit of power over stock...the truck had over 220k on it when I sold it and the tranny had no problems.
I know that toyota tried to correct the problems in the late model r151's...does anyone know what year this was and what they did?

msg...75 steering column and wiper stuff, the master cyl. will be from the 80its already set up for 4 wheel discs
