Frame looks nice!
To combat any future rust (I had a bunch) I had my frame sandblasted, then galvanized, then powdercoated. It looks great is is pretty mush bulletproof now.

Holy turd I would imagine that frame being extremely weather proof. However I don't want to learn how to weld galvanized steel, nor do we have the money to do that. I plan on using something to clean the frame again ie mineral spirits an then painting the hell out of it. A friend loaned me a big compressor which is going to get its use come real soon, I plan on spraying everything with a gun instead of rattle can!

That frame looks amazing! wow what a price too.
I went with ospho because it was a hell of a lot cheaper then Por-15
I havnt used it yet though, but heard good things about it. Btw there are two types one is a remover maybe? the other is just like por-15

O hey little tip, quote people that way they get a email alert and will respond faster for yah.

Looking forward to reading about what you use! How soon do you plan on doing it? I'm taking my frame and axles to the sandblaster next week, so I have to decide pretty quickly what I'm going to put on it when it's ready. I've been looking for something conclusive about the best product, but someone seems to have something negative to say about everything out there. I guess there just isn't a silver bullet. What are you leaning toward?

Cool following your project! Good luck!

Unfortunately, not soon enough. Probably on wednesday when I enough money to buy cleaner, primer, and paint. Honestly I have been thinking about rustoleum. I've used it before out of a rattle can on my sliders, its held up real well. I'd like to use eastwood or rust bullet, but they are costly. I have put heavy emphasis on eastwood though, I will be using their in frame rattle can at the least. I will certainly post up what I use though, so stay tuned

I wouldn't use rustoleum, go with something better. That ospho is like 20$ a gallon get a spray bottle and spray it on, por-15 is 40-50$ a bottle.
Or just a real good primer, or zinc coat... thats just me though. I had the best rustoleum get swamped in a year on a good sanded surface. A epoxy converter will last longer and be more durable I would think.

Where can ospho be purchased? Online only? I've never heard of it sadly, until just today. However, I never did a lot of painting before this resto.

Do a little research to make sure its a product you want, I only say that because I have bottle but have yet to use it.
So Home depot has it, but from what I remember I was under the impression it was the rust remover. So I went and found it at mclendons... I doubt you have those though.
Looking now I only see the one product.

hmm, I think I am wrong about it being epoxy. It looks like a good thing to do before you primer or even before por-15

por-15 is more the all in one, but even they have a metal wash best used before por-15.

I would either, por-15 only or ospho and a good primer or epoxy primer (I love epoxy primer). That way all those little pits of rust are taking care of.

Rust Bullet is good, about the same as POR-15. Both Rust Bullet and POR-15 require a wash to etch the metal before a good coat is applied. If you are spraying that isn't a big deal.

Never used Ospho, but it makes sense chemically. I would also say if you plan on painting Ospho is good. Good luck getting anything to stick once you do POR or Rust Bullet...these products cause more a ceramic/powder coated look.

Snow, funny you post that, I went to their site last night after you recommended it. And had the reaction of, "oh, its a metal sealer rust inhibitor/converter that you prime and paint....ok" (that was my thought process) Im guessing one of the dozen or more hardware stores within 5 miles of me would carry it. Back to Rustoleum, they make several paints that are automotive specific, but only a few of their entire product selection are epoxy based. Their automotive line however does appear to be a decent selection.

Dan, I did also read RustBullets site, holy moly they have a lot of choices. I did see theirs has to be etched before spraying, which with spraying, like you said, its only a little more work, where as with brushing I would find a different solution. Honestly guys I still don't know. I've looked around else where about paint but not finding any decision making information.

On another note, do Toyota colored paints have to be bought directly from Toyota? ie, Do I have to buy my 8L7 Stellar Blue Pearl from toyota, as well as primers, and clear coats? Or is there a company that mixes automotive paints I can purchase from. Im having a hell of a time finding anything on that color when it comes to paint supplier. I feel Im going to need to find a local auto body paint shop and purchase it there. Thanks for the input gents!

Bump. Title changed per OP request.

wyo

wyo you should be able to find the paint code for that color at toyota or a good auto body shop. A good autopaint shop could mix that exact color for you. I have an 06 taco with a dark blue paint my local autopaint shop looked at a code on my drivers door and mixed up a quart and it matched perfect. One thing you can do (if your autopaint shop does it as ours does) get the color you think it is in a spraypaint can and see. Just remember to keep the color mixing code so they can mix it again with no probs. I have a good buddy that works a paintshop and has for years if you have any questions i can ask him. If you are going to sell any of the cargo interior in brown let me know.:beer:

Try Van Sickle paint for the frame. It tractor/heavy equipment paint. I've used it on 2 vehicles and its lasted great. Very cost effective and easy single stage to apply. Aprox. $38 per gal. That's a lot of coats for the money.

Hey PV, I got the code online, it's going to be the actual purchase/mixing of the color I will need done. Unfortunately I haven't got any auto body friends out here in GA. Back in Wyoming, it'd be no problem as I know just the spot. I will check the auto body shops close to my house though. Thanks for the idea, if not them. Ill drive the ten minutes to a large toyota collision center. They should be able to help!! Send me a PM with what your looking for when it comes to brown cargo interior. I have some, but its the yellow brown seats with brown carpet. Im keeping the brown brown seats. Carpet on the other hand, I've already been told we are not having carpet in this rig. SO let me know!

Arborist, thanks I'll have to do some looking Tractor supply sells something like that for cheap as well. It has great reviews as well. Ill have to do some cheking on the Van Sickle. Thanks Again.

Now for an update. Saturday afternoon, I begin to finish strpping my frame (does that make sense:confused:), the only thing left on but the bolts are half out, if the front axle. When pulling all the pieces off, I was amazed to find parts of my frame with original paint. It made me extactic to see that, and the frame at those points was beautiful. Which, helps me know that this truck is AWESOME. Anywho, heres the pics, and I will be getting the front axle off today. Then waiting til wednesday and then its paintin time :bounce: at least for the frame!

Everything except the front axle removed

Not close to you at all, but Crabtree Auto Painting in Chamblee are excellent folks, VERY familiar with Toyotas and Cruisers. They have done non-Cruiser work for me in the past, and I dropped by this past Saturday for a once-over rust patrol on my new FJ60. And sitting there is a beautiful 62 that they painted 5 years ago and it still looks awesome. If somehow you went that distance, I expect you would be very pleased with the quality and price.

RJS, I'd love to have someone paint the truck for me, but financially that just can't happen. Not to the amount I am wanting. The entire truck, less the interior floor is going to be painted. Which is going to be extensive hours of work. For me to be able to afford that I'd need a really good job (which I haven't got). I may go drop in there one day just for kicks though. The painting is still a while out. I have to get the frame and suspension done before I should really be worrying about the body, but my chaotic mind does that to me. Thanks for the heads up though.

On another note, does anyone have any tips on getting the single bolt that hold's the leaf spring on, out? I have used a BFH to attempt the job, but to no avail, I cut the stupid thing off, and still im getting my arse kicked. So any input would be greatly apprecieated before I cut the whole leaf spring mount to bits. I even used heat, to the point the bushing was melting(oops) Which is going to be replaced any who. But dadgummit things like this annoy the pee out of me!:bang: Thanks all!

Well, today was productive! For starters Kem Kromik from sherwin Williams, two thumbs up. Ask me in a year answer may be different but the application of it and the out come of the first coat is awesome. We started by cutting the two diagonal pieces off the front of the frame so they too could be cleaned and properly painted, as well as that portion of the frame. Then we ground the hell out of the remaining areas that needed to be cleaned, it was looking good. Last step was to give it a good degreasing bath (still find it odd to wash metal with water). I used some TSP from sherwin Williams as well. It worked wonders. Now began the fun part spraying, something which I have NEVER done. It went well. Tomorrow I'll put on another three coats of primer, then a top coat. I decided on an industrial top coat enamel from sherwin Williams. It was a good price and it's readily available. I'll post more pics tomorrow, as I'm on my phone, but here is one I took!

This is after the first coat.
