Well, today was productive! For starters Kem Kromik from sherwin Williams, two thumbs up. Ask me in a year answer may be different but the application of it and the out come of the first coat is awesome. We started by cutting the two diagonal pieces off the front of the frame so they too could be cleaned and properly painted, as well as that portion of the frame. Then we ground the hell out of the remaining areas that needed to be cleaned, it was looking good. Last step was to give it a good degreasing bath (still find it odd to wash metal with water). I used some TSP from sherwin Williams as well. It worked wonders. Now began the fun part spraying, something which I have NEVER done. It went well. Tomorrow I'll put on another three coats of primer, then a top coat. I decided on an industrial top coat enamel from sherwin Williams. It was a good price and it's readily available. I'll post more pics tomorrow, as I'm on my phone, but here is one I took!

This is after the first coat.

More tomorrow,
Turner

That's awesome. I'm right behind you. Frame and axles are back from blasting and awaiting paint. Maybe by tomorrow, if I'm lucky!

Yea it's real nice. I would like to let you know, spraying is messy to fill and clean up, and needs ample time to complete. I learned that yesterday. And the act of spraying takes time. Just a heads up if you've never done it.

Now, for some more pictures. It's red because thats the only color primer they had in store, which that's fine its just the primer. Please chime in here, how important are the two angled pieces I cut out? I was contemplating not putting them back in. I probably will, but i was just curious.

Does anyone in the Atlanta area who knows how to paint, want to come over and help me set my gun up properly? It did the job just fine, but I feel I had to hold the gun to close to the surface. And it seemed to be lobbing clumps of paint at times instead of a thick mist. Any input here would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully I'll have more to report at the end of the day.

Turner,
The guy who blasted my frame and recommended the kem kromik said to thin the paint with xylene. Did you thin at all? If not, that might explain some of your frustration. I'm no expert, though, so I can't be sure that's what you were dealing with.

Looks good. And I would definitely put those pieces back in. I can't imagine taking structural pieces off of the frame without improving them or at least replacing them.

I did thin it in one pot, didn't seem to help much. And data sheet they gave me says reduction not recommended. It calls for xylene r2k4 for cleanup however. It wasn't terrible, just noticeable that's all.

As far as the two pieces in the front, yea they're going bak in. Was silly of me to want to be lazy an leave them out.

Just read the application guide and pulled this from it:

Based upon that info, I won't be reducing it. Thanks for the heads up.

I could have used a reducer today, it was hot enough that my gun was clogging, due to paint drying faster than I was spraying. So I gave up for the day. I only got one coat on, but two certainly looks to be enough. But I want a smoothish primer to top coat over, so Ill give it at minimum one more tomorrow morning possibly, two. Then on to topcoat.

On another note, this primer is tough as hell. After only 12 hours of drying, when I was changing the position of the frame it got rather beat up. All it did was scuff the primer, not a scratch, but a scuff. I did notice with the Kem Kromik, that it needs to be sprayed REALLY slow to get the smooth ish coat. Other wise you get a mild texture, but maybe thats supposed to be there. I should break out the macro lense to show you, maybe Ill do it before I start tomorrow, to show a before and after. Any who, I changed my booth today as well which took most of my day, as I work alone and the frame is bigger than me. On to the pics!

On another cool note, my dogs (millie and moose), are enjoying the downed cruiser in the back yard!

You can't really see it, but both dogs are laying under the Cruiser

I just got in from priming my frame. First time ever with a compressor and spray gun, so I'm learning. Same results as yours, by the way: sort of sputtering and spurting - not a nicely diffused spray. Not sure what's up. Hope the last few coats go down smoothly. Just for kicks, I tried brushing the paint on my axle. Actually got a pretty smooth finish. I'll have to post pics tomorrow. I might have to reposition my frame for better access, too.

I think spraying works, its just the blasted gun, it needs to be set up right. Ive managed to get it there so thats good. Yea, I feel the position it is in is about the best with out a rotisserie. 95% of the frame can be painted this way. If you could have it at about 5 ft on stands of some kind, that would be perfect, because then youd only have to touch up the spots where the stands were. Im pleased with the current position, if you got the option you could hang it flat as if you just lifted it off the ground, at about 5 ft you could paint EVERYTHING which would be perfect. But I don't have that option. It's to bad were not closer. It'd be cool to help and be helped, however I had help yesterday, it was nice, but as much as I need help for things, I prefer to struggle and do it myself. Not sure why. I also just realized I tend to ramble, sorry to those who ever read this thread!

I just finished my third coat of primer, is it normal for a frame to take approximately a qt of primer? I've used about 3/4 of the gallon I bought. Seems like a lot. Hopefully some of ya'll will chime in here. Going to the top coat here shortly.

Three coats of primer, and on coat of top coat. Again, as before with the primer, the top coat gets two thumbs up? Only time will tell if it is good. But it went on quick and with little effort. It only took me about an hour to an hour and a half to get the single top coat on. With that it only used a little over one full pot (approx 25 oz.) Heres some pictures from today,

Congrats! Great progress.

I just finished spraying more primer on my axles, leaf springs, shackles (etc), and the frame. Bought a gravity feed gun and the process went a whole lot smoother! Sucks that I wasted time and money on the other gun. The new gun puts out a much more diffused spray and doesn't clog as quickly as the other.

My frame looks similar to yours in spots - although, I started out with some rusted areas that probably make mine look rougher. I'm uploading pics now. I'll post to my thread later tonight so you can compare results. Perhaps part of it is just the Kem Kromik. Who knows?

What paint are you using for the topcoat?

Looking good! Keep it up!

I used SW Indusrial Enamel B54 B11. I think I'm going to like the end result. It goes on easy, and looks good, feels durable after drying. Only problem is it takes for ever to be able to recoat. I now have two coats on, and may put on the third tonight. Then its prepping everything else to be painted. Then, we wait, the primer and top coat need 7 days to cure! Oh thats a long time.

So I finished my second cost on saturday morning. After looking at it a few times while drying and after drying, I don't think it needs another one. So we've decided to leave it. I ordered my spring perches and new bushings with greaseable shackles and pins on Thursday recieved the perches and they the wrong size. They are 2.5 wide instead of the stock spring 2.75 wide. So I have to figure that out tomorrow and hopefully get another set sooner than later. I'll be using ruff stuff perches and anti wrap/ traction bar, 4x4 labs 6 bolt hi steer, a cut and turn, and 37" MTRs with the double brad locks from the military. Then later this summer well be putting in ARBs, 4.88 ring and pinion and long fields and probably a bilstein shock. Now my question is, since I have never performed a Cut an Turn, does anyone have a tech writeup on it? I looked and found nothing except people talking about doing it. If there isn't one, I'll do it and make one, which I probably still will. Thanks for the input and help. As it is needed.

Man, that frame is looking fabulous, good job! You should change the thread name to "3 to 1 AWESOME RIG"

RJ

Thanks RJ, it turned out well. When you going to come by and check it out? Last night the wife pulled the dash out of the wrecked body so we can get it out of the garage. There's still a few bits I've got to remove but shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I'm trying to nail down my chores and schedule for this weekend, then will contact you to see what's convenient for you. I should try to get some more mud on mine to cover up the dents before showing it to you - the pollen is helping, but the dents are big!

Nice job! Keep the pics coming !

RJ, no big deal, my 02 4Runner has a smashed fender with grey primer on it. Bring it on over. Let me know, if you wanna swing by, not sure if ill be working, but beer drinking can be had!!!:beer::beer:

Nice job! Keep the pics coming !

Biche, thanks. I will keep the pics coming don't worry. That was part of my idea of a build a picture documentation of the chaos,

Now, in other news, I feel I have done nothing lately, :bang: Thats ok though Im keeping up with school. Im currently attempting to do some body panel swapping but getting my arse handed to me. Its not pleasant. Anyone know where to buy replacement quarter panels? Besides the dealer and conicelli...Or are all places going to be 1000 a panel? Also, who would be interested in a 60 series picture book? By this I mean a picture book(DVD) with pictures of everything on a 60, almost a haynes manual type thing, except just pictures? I may need to start another thread on this but its just an idea. Thanks for watching to the few who do.
