I've also been getting grief from the Rover guys..... Saying a disco will out preform a slow pig-ish 80 any day. I figured it would happen...

I would say that with 5.29s and now with the new supercharger and other stuff that has been done to it recently, it sure isn't slow anymore. I have only been driving with it as it is for a few weeks now, but it is a night & day difference. Today will be the first run with the supercharger over Donner, so I shall see how things go. Talked to exhaust shop yesterday, thinking about going to some higher flowing spun cats along with a newer magnaflow muffler with 3" from the Y pipe back. Hoping this isn't too loud, but I would like a little bit more. Was thinking I might put the stock resonator back on as well, or at least get a new one.

HAHAHA...Seems that every owner has their bias (of course).
I was totally SOLD on the Toyota brand after my FJ62. It had 215K on the clock when I got her and a pretty good oil leak. I base lined it and did all the PM stuff which included replacing the pan gasket on the outside chance THAT was the culprit of the leak...Turns out, that it was.
That motha fired up EVERY TIME, without fail, and never leaked again, or burned oil. People would LAUGH when I pulled up to some obstacles/ trails with the opinion ( I found out afterwards) "that things will never...." Shocked them and myself every time.
Now, I have a taco, the wife has a 4 runner and the daughter has a 4 runner. I love em despite the recent bad rap theyre getting with the recalls.
Now obviously the 62 wasnt perfect for me by any means, otherwise I wouldnt have sold it...However, That rig will always have a special place in my heart for sure.

I'd give you tips/advice, but my bat phone rang straight to Jack for my 80 advice. The only two things that are vital IMO are a compression check and post 95 OBDII motor.

oh and I think I have a service manual in the garage you can have.

I agree on the compression testing, but I'm just wondering how or if that would be something you could check on an out of state vehicle? Could only do it on a vehicle that you see in person near by...

And thanks Jereme! Ill take the manual off your hands if you don't want it.

well, I have my first report of the new version of my truck pulling the Donner Summit grade. Before, I would have to take my truck out of overdrive. Today, WOW , left overdrive on and it pulled like there was no tomorrow. Felt like there was a lot more where that came from too. The mild mannered LX is no more ;p Gotta say, if i wasn't already impressed with my truck, I sure as hell am now.

and with that little tidbit, how goes the search ? As for compression tests, you could always try and see if a mud member in that location might be able to do that for you.

Jon

Cool Jon! Sounds like a worthwhile upgrade then.

The search is on, well sorta, isome trucks have caught my eye, but I don't have the Rover sold yet so I haven't done more than just look.

I would really like to find one with lockers already. Question: will the electric motor from my spare toyota 8" 4.10 diff work on the 80's lockers? Could I install the locker on the 80's rear diff if I made a notch for the fork of course?

Yes you can install lockers in non locked trucks. Go to Bajaoverland.com. Kevin did some great write ups and that's one of them.

Might be able to rob some parts, not sure about which ones. As far as the using your spare on the rear of the 80, no. The lockers are a different design, the rear axle is a 9.5" ring gear, the fronts and mini truck stuff is 8". Also the rear "short" side axle on the 80 is specialized for the locker. You can use a locker rear axle in a non-locker axle, but not the other way around. The locker axle has longer splines to allow the locking collar to slide back and forth.

Just as a side note, re-gearing an e-locker axle is slightly more involved than with a non locker axle. Luckily, I have the shims needed to accomplish a re-gear on an e-locker axle.:hillbilly:

I saw that one but I'm not willing to go through the potential hassle of dealing with smog here every year (assuming it is indeed a fully compliant OBDII rig). Non OBDII '95's, as I understand it, still may actually have the OBDII port but not actually be fully OBDII compliant regarding electronics.

Some if not all smog inspectors may want to do a full manual inspection just because its a "1995" model regardless of whether it actually is a full OBDII rig. Otherwise the smog inspector just plugs into the OBDII port (found under the lower left portion of the dash under the "Fuse/OBD" panel) to get the smog info they need and assuming no codes its a done deal.

But there, AFAIK, should be a sticker/label somewhere in the engine compartment stating its an OBDII?

According to one guy here: He states his '95 has the OBDII sticker but his is not fully OBDII compliant.

It seems, key word seems, most of the post February 1995 manufactured "1995" 80's are OBDII compliant based upon what I've been reading on the 80's forum. But that's no guarantee either...

Apparently, from one post I read, early A343 tranny's might have had a reverse issue that was fully remedied in late '95 models as well as '96 and '97 model 80's.

Its a maze!

So basically its a toss up. Darn, that's exactly the type of truck I'm looking for though! Oh well... I guess its strictly 96 and 97 only then.

Thanks Dan!

I think the only sure fire way to know...assuming the owner doesn't...would be to connect a ScanGaugeII or similar to the port and see if you get a reading; works for local or near local vehicle only though ;).

That's why I'm focusing on '96 and '97.

No...can't sell it; need it for pulling the KK, hunting, etc. But I want a trail rig with FF and SFA. But I'm picky...so it may take forever to find an 80 I can justify parting $ with ;). I figure they're only going to get harder to find so might as well start looking now! The good thing is I'm in no hurry since I have a pretty capable rig.

maybe we can find some rich guy with two nice ones he wants to sell:grinpimp:

Matt,

Keep an eye out on the Private party lot on Mill. That's where mine came from. It had no running boards, no roof rack and no lockers. Just what I was looking for.

Saw this on our local CL: 1997 Toyota Land Crusier

Good luck dude.

That's actually where I found my rover! I'd like to find one with a small lift at most, but no bumpers or anything else since I want to build that stuff.

You'd hate black...that's what I think ;)

Yeah, maybe if it was a mall crawler, but NV pin striping would stand out like none other

I know that you have been talking about that for some time. The hundy is a finely built rig. Lots O LOVE into that thing.
