How much, if any, effort should I put into removing the undercoating on the body of the truck? A lot of it still has the body color rubberized stuff on it, especially in the wheel wells. Should any effort be made to remove this? There are a lot of horror stories of materials like this trapping water and oxidizers between it and the paint, so I'm just trying to make sure I'm informed here. Or are the horror stories over the aftermarket spray undercoatings?

Slightly confused here.

I did some Patina preservation today.

I have a new project. This one may prove to be the most challenging to date.

When the totally BITCHIN Decals were added at some point, the shop put a weak coat of silver paint on the truck over the factory silver.

Yesterday I cleaned a corner and then went straight to the orbital. I felt the pad dragging and looked at it and it was full of paint.

I backed off and took some goof off to a section and the silver started coming right off.

I moved to see what will happen on the super faded hood. Looks like the bad overspray may have protected the paint underneath.

So, my mission will be to remove the silver down to the factory silver and protect the decals.

CLR and steel wool was working well. I’m going to get some 3000 grit paper and try that as well.

Gonna be a big job. Restoration thread in the 60 section

Working a bit more on taking this spray paint off the factory paint.

I’m not sure why I had not done this before but a spray bottle with CLR is the ticket.

Also, I’ve tried 2000-3000 sand paper. Scotchbrite, 00 and 0000 steel wool.

Also I’ve tried Goof Off, straight water, Zepp Orange and CLR

For this truck with a good paint job underneath the crud the CLR and 0000 steel wool is making it happen the best with no swirls or scratching in the OE paint.

so @wngrog few questions...

any ideas on restoring or making graphics/decals pop again?

what about pretty decent single stage paint? Light cutting/cleaning turtle wax, rubbing compound, clean, CLR with pad or microfiber? Clay bar then wax?

I played a bit with those on the hood and they are sun faded. The side ones are in much better shape.

I am no expert on them. Just watch your applicator and make sure you are not pulling too much color off
