Hey guys,

A buddy of mine down in Roanoke is planning a Potts Mountain trail run some time in November. The plan would be to either meet at the trail head Saturday morning or if you want to camp in his back yard Friday night you can. Then Saturday wheel as far as we want to, camp for the night and finish the rest of the trail Sunday and go home.

The possible dates are Nov 6/7/8 or Nov 20/21/22 (weekend before Thanksgiving). I can't go the former but can the latter. Post up if you're interested and which dates work better for you.

If you go the weekend before Thanksgiving, you might want to research nearby campgrounds as a contingency. That should be deer season and the woods can get pretty full.

Douthat state park is really nice but there are closer ones.

Good response so far. You guys interested in going down Friday night or caravanning down early Saturday morning? Probably too much to ask for an early season snow but one can still hope!

I am interested but can't commit. Having to miss Fall Crawl because of my house move is a disappointment, so I would love to get out at least once this fall. However, I'm sketchy on my schedule in November for the same reason. The later date seems more appealing to me if I can do it.

Howdy! I am the aforementioned "buddy from Roanoke". If @iptman can make the weekend of the 20th that would be my preference, I've been trying to get him down here to run Potts for a while. It's a fun trail for sure. Length is 7+-ish miles and sliders are highly recommended. There are also numerous optional obstacles like big rock steps but they mostly seem to favor short wheelbase rigs. Most of the mudholes can be bypassed as well. We ran it back in January and it took a little bit over 4 hours. There's a nice field about halfway in that's perfect for camping. I'm definitely open to folks couching it at my place Friday night or camping in the backyard or whatever.

Dave(westafari) texted me this morning. I should be good for either weekend. It will be a day run for me but any one can come to my place Friday or if camping on the trail don't work out Saturday we can have a big Bon fire back at my place.

I certainly don't mind the cold...in fact I probably got my best nights sleep at Fall Crawl 2014 when it got down into the low 20s, if not colder, overnight.

I'd agree I sleep good in the cold. It's the geting up and having to craw out of that nice warm sleeping bag that SUCKS!!!

I definitely enjoy cold weather camping. The camping spot on Potts is up around 3400' elevation so it will be cooler up there. I expect we will get in there early enough that if folks want to do an out and back run to finish the trail and then turn around and wheel back up to camp there will be time. I usually run it from south->north so you start off high, run out the ridge and descend to the valley. Running it from the lower (N) end is fun too and changes the character of a lot of the tricky spots.
