Down to the frame. Have a couple of minor mods to make to allow for power steering and axles. We will be sting then galvanizing the frame.

Also a picture of a rear bumper that 4+plus is making for me. He's also making a forward facing bull bar with winch mount.

Alcan custom springs are ordered! These guys rock! They find out how you will be using your vehicle and customize the springs to fit your needs. Price is equivalent to old man emu.

Forgot to add the picture of the bull bar.

Check out the rust in the bed... Will be replacing once we locate a new floor panel. Getting close to finding in S America but need to find out how to get it here.

We leave in two days to go get the 60 that has our 2f, 4sp, transfer case, and rear axle. Should be a fun road trip with Mike!

1986 FJ 60 has arrived at her new home. Much thanks to John for a very pleasant transaction through Mud! I drove her around the block for the last time as a 60.
12 hrs of driving and A LOT of gas towing her home.... Her legacy will live on in Pops 45!

Like spreading her proverbial ashes, there are bits of rust all along I-65 in KY & AL.

Looks like good parts. Holler if it has a lift might have a buyer

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I537 using IH8MUD

We have (Mike has) taken the drive train out of the 60 and mounted in the 45 frame. We (Mike & Roma) had to fabricate a cross member under the tranny. Nice welding Roma!
Now the frame is ready for sandblasting & galvanizing. Hopefully will have both done this week!
Decided against Alcan springs. They told me it would be 5 more weeks before they could ship & saw just too many not so positive reviews here in mud. Old man Emu seems to be tried & true and I don't know of any other option for the springs.

The sandman has completed his handiwork.... Off to Chattanooga tomorrow for galvanizing.

Ordered a bunch today from Man-A-Frey. Budget evaporating quickly! ;)

Check out the stamped numbers on the frame... Did not even know they were there.

Man-A-Fre - very helpful with needed information today.

From what I here, the galvanizing will mess up all the threaded holes. Just a heads up. You'll want to chase those threads back out.

Well that was fun. Nothing like getting up at 4am, driving 2 hrs, then waiting for 5 hrs more only to drive 2 more hrs. BUT.... The frame is galvanized & beautiful!!! Getting powder coated tomorrow for the ultimate rust prevention. Should be good for another 75 yrs! ;)
Cost to galvanize = $195
Cost to powder coat = $400
Cost to know this will last 3 more generations... Priceless.

Does galvanizing affect the strength of the steel? (I know hot dipped nails seem to bend easier). Was it a hot dip process or electro-galvanizing?

Got the frame back from powder.... Wow! It looks amazing! Even better than I thought. Don't think pictures do it justice... Will put more pics of it up once we get it unwrapped.

Yes, you can definitely powder coat a galvanized frame. I had them put light texture with it so it would cover any imperfections from the hot dip.

Prepping the surface after hot dip is the absolute key. The best way to powder coat and galvanize is a process called "Duplexing." That just about requires the folks that do the galvanizing to also do the powder coat. If you have to wait any more than a day then you have to pre-heat the galvanized part before applying the powder for best adhesion.

Here's some good info on Duplexing.

The frame was powder coated at Premier Powder Coating in Huntsville, AL. They really did a great job, took their time to prepare it properly. Solid folks to work with.

The FJ60 disassembly is complete. Time to prep axles & get the engine where we need it.
