I have researched several times but haven't seemed to find an answer. I am hoping someone can shed a little light. My Alt./Power Steering belt has become an issue. I have replaced three times and have tried two different sizes. The first belt that popped was a NAPA 25-9620XL, I replaced it with a
NAPA 25-7612XL (belt in the video) to see if that would help with the belt riding on edge and get deeper in the pulley, but no go. I can't seem to find the correct belt size. You can see in the video, the belt in the power steering pulley rides on edge and makes the whole belt wobble creating a squealing sound as well. The belt I had before was a little wider and did the same thing. At this point I don't know if I need to purchase a different pulley size for the power steering or Alt. If anyone has any ideas I'm all ears!

Looks like maybe you have a saginaw converted PS pump? I am not sure here how the pulley works with the Saginaw conversions with regards to what pulley goes on there. The belt to me does not even look like it fits into the alternator pulley correctly. See mine below (all OEM):

You can see the belts on mine are wider than yours. I think you need the proper pulley on the Saginaw pump. You have two different sized pulleys in the belt path. I am not totally sure how the pulley works with regards to the 60 series Saginaw conversion. George @ Valley Hybrids has a kit for the Saginaw conversion and might be able to help you out. He's @orangefj45 on Mud I think. You can see his Saginaw conversion thread here. Not sure if OEM pulley fits on the Saginaw shaft or what. If this is not a saginaw conversion then maybe he can at least help you source a pulley that fits. But if I were you I would get a properly sized pulley and then get the correct belt. Mine were Mitsubishi belts on last change. The OEM P/N for the PS belt I got was 99343-11570-77. HTH.

Check your alignment first.
Meaning that both pulled line up and are straight and not cocked on either side. As to why your getting that whine. And popping off.
What PS do you have original or the Saginaw ?
Conversion?

Thanks for the input! Yes, its a saginaw conversion...A wide enough belt to fit the alternator pulley would be to wide for the power steering pulley for sure...I think the squeal/wining has to be the belt. It never did that until I put that smaller one on. Whats the best way to see if the pulleys are aligned?

Seems you've answered your own question. You need a pulley to match.

hahaha, yeah that seems about right. Any ideas how to figure out what size and where to get it from?

Ask @orangefj45 here on Mud or call him at Valley Hybrids he is located in Stockton CA. he can give you the correct size.
Or look up his thread about the conversion.

Here you go!

Thanks for the help guys. As usual IH8MUD comes through again! I reached out to George, will see what he says about a new pulley size.

I can post some pics after work this afternoon.

There is probably a sag pulley that you could purchase that would match your other pulleys. Seems like I remember folks using one from a Volvo to make the pulleys match.

I believe so, it looks just like that but the fluid res. is tilted inward a little. Will show in the pic later this afternoon. But, your pic looks just like mine...I wonder if the pulley for the alternator is not the right size?...oh boy...

Alternator pulley looks like mine to me. You just need either a pulley on the pump or a belt that works better with both pulleys. How does it set on the crank pulley? Sounds like Saginaw guys just deal with the different pulley sizes and George gets them a belt that works on both pulleys. So maybe this is as simple as getting the correct belt. If it were me I would feel better about the correct pulley, but seems like the correct belt makes the Saginaw conversion work. A wider belt would be better to me for the contact area you get with it. HTH.

Yeah, if the pump pulley is the wrong size I would much rather get the right one. But, also hoping its as simple as just getting the right belt size.

Ian - what size belt you running? I might try that first...all the pics from you guys look like exactly what I have under the hood.

I've actually since changed to a little smaller diameter belt from NAPA to have a little bit more adjustment. I was chasing a belt squeak that turned out to be the water pump belt. For the record the squeak was obviously a belt squeak, it did not sound like yours.

I have to run out and look at my belt.

My 40 has a homebrew sag conversion on it. When I ran the belt that fit my alternator, the belt was too big for the regular GM sag pulley. It sat up high and proud and had a little bobble to it. I was afraid it would fly off so I changed the belt to a smaller one that fits my pump pulley but is a little too small for my alt. It hasn't given me any issues in the last 6 years or so that it has been on there. I did take extra care to make sure the pulleys are in alignment. Misaligned pulleys will throw a belt faster than anything else.
