I have a long drive tonight into the mtns, so I thought I'd pick up a new drivers side insert to ensure maximum visability should it rain (it is the NW). Also, I tried a "novel" approach to replacement - I popped the wiper blade off of the arm, brought it into the parts guy (Toyota parts guy naturally) and asked him for a replacement. He naturally offered to replace the insert for me. Took him about 1.75 seconds. The insert was ~$8.00. I can replace the inserts myself, but this was really fast.

This sounds like a good idea except that my parts dealer is like 2500 miles away (each way). ;)

I think might be one closer but I'm not sure if they'd sell the correct parts. Also as mentioned above, some dealers don't sell the Toyota blades, they sell the junk.

Riley,
Send him the arms and I'm sure he will install the inserts and send them back. That's a safe bet here in NM where it rains in Feb and July.

Hey B-

It rained in April, were you traveling? :flipoff2:

$3...$8, they kinda look the same if you need reading glasses

400 views on wiper blades.

No wonder those 40/60 guys tease us. Somebody should break something quick, calling Junk to bail us out.

hey i run the OEM inserts on all my cruisers except the fj45 which I changed to longer blades..

was wondering however........does Leatherique work well on OEM inserts :flipoff2:

Just for those who might own other Toyota products. Some models come in both Japan and US flavors. One example is the Camry. The inserts can be dependant on where it was made so a vin number is handy to have when ordering them. Of course all our LCs are Japan.

Just go OEM if in doubt. I bought my 3 blades for my FJ80 at the local dealer, installed them and they are much better then the high-end stuff sold at the local auto store.

ONE AT A TIME, remove the metal strips from the old one and place them in the new one. Now it's a bit of juggling to hold the three parts together ( 2 metal strips, new rubber insert) as you feed the nonlocking end along the pairs of fingers.

DougM

So I take it that the OEM refills don't come with new metal strips? The auto store brands I've bought before do. The metal strips seem pretty flemsy to have to use over and over.

Those stainless steel strips are meant to be reused forever (or so).

I reused the metal strips when I replace the rubber inserts with new OEM a few weeks back.

I think the OEM rubber inserts are 200X better than any aftermarket crap from Shucks/Napa/etc - even from Bosch, etc.

That said, I agree with Junk that the actual replacement of the rubber inserts was "challenging." I've managed to do a bunch of other repairs, but this one looked easy, but took way too much thinking. Once I got it figured out (relief for sure), it was obvious. Hindsight...

Of course, maybe it was the martini I drank before hand...

Wow, I have the cheapo $7 Silicon blades that I like 100 times better than OEM, who would of thought?

Related issue.... There's a little black plastic cover that hides the nut/threaded shaft which fastens the entire wiper arm.

The little cover thing has gone missing on my driver side.

Anybody know if that little thingy can be sourced from Toy? Or am I out of luck unless I buy the entire wiper arm. (which ain't gonna happen). No big deal, it just looks crappy.

dont think it comes with the arm, bet its about a $6 part at the dealer.......just guessing though

nope, doesnt come with the arm. even the nut is separate. sor has them, so am pretty sure dan can get one. probably pay more in shipping than the part. just buy a steel rim or something so you get free shipping.

Valeo Wiper Blades

My 2008 GMC Sierra has Valeo wiper blades on it. The design is super low profile and the overall design hides the mechanism that keeps them flat against the windshield so ice cannot gunk up the blades as much.

I've been very happy with them. The advantage of the low profile design is that they don't get knocked around by wind as much so they stay on the windshield better.

I plan to get a set for the 80. I'll keep you all posted.

What about the PIAA silicone wiper blades .. ? 15.95 in eBay .. !

BTW 20" front and 12" rear ?

I have had a set of PIAA silicon blades for going on 5 years now they still dont chatter or make any noise even on a dry windshield i think they have another year in them at least. that being said I will buy them again. However i will buy factory for the rear because of the curvature to the glass i have never been able to get after market to wipe the whole thing.
hope this helps
