Well the stars have finally aligned and I finally opened my mind and checkbook and purchased a 1969 FJ40. I've researched as much as I can stand and now CAN'T WAIT to see my new pride and joy!!

A little background-

PO is a professor at CU and bought it two years ago from a grad student. This FJ40 originally came from California. The original owner outfitted it for two plus years in Baja (you'll note that this truck unfortunately does not have the rear jump seats, as they were removed by the original owner for storage space). After which, a Geology professor at CU-Boulder bought it and stored it in his barn outside of Boulder for almost 30 years. So the cruiser basically sat in a barn untouched. Here's where I come in the picture ;)

Here is a mostly complete list of upgrades/maintenance:
HFS 2.5" Shocks and suspension
Clutch (this summer)
Water pump
Starter
Full tune up in summer '05 - new spark plugs, wires, distributor, coil
32/10.50 BFG ATs and rims
Rebuilt '76 axles with 4 wheel disc brakes
Rebuilt carb
Hood hardware and rear door handle
Window hardware
Front and rear fenders
Seat belts
Side view mirrors
Carpeting
High back jeep seats

Enough words...onto the good stuff. Pictures!

And now here's the rust. I'd like someone to tell me exactly how big of a pain it'll be to fix. :o

Initial $$ will be spent on tires/ 4" suspension and rust repair. Beyond that I'd like to keep it looking semi-stock, maybe a fresh 2F and transfer case, lockers and 35"s.

Many thanks for all the knowledge and experience that has come before me. It's been tons of help!

Good story, and awesome rig it looks great. Congrats.. Take out the extra fender lights :whoops: and it'll be perfect. I'm a bit of a purist myself and like the stock look. Keep it that way.

I saw that 40 for sale in my 'hood and on Craigslist. I thought it looked pretty solid and I tried to convince someone in my club to pick it up. Oh well, another nice 40 heads to Texas...

If you're going to ditch the non-stock rollbar and need some original jump seats, let me know.

very cool! Might I suggest a power steering conversion. With 35's and lockers that manual steering isn't going to be any fun. You've got the brakes, so get the steering taken care of.

That is pretty minimal rust if thats it. The floorboards is surface so a few minutes with an abrasion wheel and that gone. The rear you can get a replacement seal and weld that in.

What are you using the rig for? 35's because you like that size or? You may find that low range isn't so low with 35's and highway may suffer from lack of power. 33's are a great size and no gearing change needed.

I love the look of a clean cruiser on 33 muds of some sort, locked...total sleeper.

here's MDH33's on 34's I think...LOVE the look of his rig

Not sure about that story, as I've seen that rig driving around my part of metro Denver for a while.

I just looked as this rig...and I agree, looks great! Wolf in sheep's clothing. I dig it. 35s were because I've had 33s on a couple trucks and wanted to go bigger. But on second thought...you have a point FJBen. :D

And MDH- the PO lives in the area and has driven it for a couple years back in forth to Boulder. So it's certainly possible that you've seen it around.

This has been me all day... :bounce::bounce2::bounce:

Welcome to the cruiser addiction!

Got mine back in March. this is my first. Love it! It was pretty much stock when I got it. I have done a lot to it since March. Still working on it.

Dude, that's not even considered rust in my book, just sand it and paint over it.

ditto, that rear sill is pristine :D

Nice 40, I'm sure it will love its new home.

Texas boy here, born and raised!:D

nice looking cruiser. If you're upgrading to a 4" lift let me know if I can take that HFS 2.5" one off of your hands. That rust isn't bad at all, you should look at coolerman's ride before he got a hold of it.
