Picking out a clutch

OEM. I had an aftermarket "super clutch" in my 82 Hilux and it was a waste of money.

I bought an LC Engineering Pro Street clutch a few years ago for the 85 4Runner and it's been pretty good. The problem with some of the racing clutches is that they are ceramic faced which makes them sort of digital; they are either engaged or not. I don't like a clutch with no feathering ability.

OEM means original equipment manufacturer. In other words, buy the clutch from your friendly local Toyota dealer. No wait, buy it from Beno or Cruiserdan at American Toyota in NM and get the IH8MUD discount.

I have gotten a couple from Marlin Crawler. I think they are slightly higher rated than stock but still have the standard friction material on them, not ceramic.

I typically go ahead and get a new flywheel while I'm at it. I'd at least check it and have it resurfaced if you need to.

I am going to be replacing my DD clutch soon and plan to order a clutch and flywheel from Marlin.

Also, be ready to adjust the throw on the master cylinder, especially if your clutch is worn pretty good. I had to back the last one I worked on out a good bit just to get it to disengage when the clutch WAS pressed down.

And welcome to MUD.

Thanks I did the Clutch on my friends 89 toyota and just bought a new fly wheel for it because he drove it till the clutch didn't work at all.

which did you go with, marlin or OEM?

im preparing for a an engine rebuild in 1 month and have settled on marlin's 1200 HD (compared to factory 900lb), i have yet to place an order as i've still got some time to think about it before the engine is pulled.

.

when i rebuilt my trans i got the clutch and flywheel from marlin. if i were to do it again, i probably wouldn't get his flywheel. i called them on it cause it looked like shiz when i got it. the un-machined surfaces looked really crappy (like a cheap casting) and there was even rust on it out of the box. they said it was made in chechnya or some other thrid world company or some garbage, but it was "engineered in the usa". well, whatever.

it seems to work, the clutch feels strong, but in my opinion the toyota OEM flywheel is a much higher quality part. if you could reuse it i would without question.

that being said, i am not sure if they are interchangeable. i mean if you run the marlin clutch disc you might have to run the marlin flywheel as they were designed as a system. if i remember correctly the step height on the friction surface is different the the oem one in order to work with the new higher ft-lb rated torque of the disc.
not to say that it couldnt be re-machined to work, but a point worth noting. i wouldn't just go slap it all together without at least calling someone at marlin and asking them. see if you can get some step height dimensions and compare to yours, ya know?

edit: also remember to figure out which size flywheel you have AND that you get the pressure plate to match it. i had a mishap with that, causing me to have to rip out my freshly installed transmission.
Also, the pressure plates have been revised from toyota, meaning that if this is your first clutch replacement that the pressure plate in your truck most likely will not match the one you get from toyota if you go buy one. they look compeltely different now and have less fingers. that also stumped me for a while too. i have a pic somewheres....

see.
i swore up and down my problems were because i had the wrong part. the "new" pressure plate is on the left. (they are all re manufactured units now)
in addition, it didnt even fit the new marlin flywheel that well, so i was really curious.

in the end, i got it sorted out, and its running seemingly fine for a couple thousand miles. but only time will tell.

I have a centerforce 2 in my pick up. its been in for almost 10 years now and the last couple years it has seen some real abuse off road. overall i am very happy with it
