do you have a complete picture of the white dash? now you did that and have black door cards you should get the grey door bits (or painted black) so they don’t look out of place.

PD: do you still have the fan shroud?

Thanks! Pics are without lift. Rear bumper will either be custom or the 4x4Labs bumper. Not a fan of the aesthetics of the other options. Some look too boxy, some look too modern.
 
@JMasi Will take a pic of the dash soon.

Door hardware will be black eventually.

Still thinking I might wrap the door cards in a coyote cordura and canvas



And yes I do have the fan shroud.
 
Finally some updates now that we're stuck at home. Dario did a great job on the full body restoration. Monor rust around the drip rails was fully moved and new metal welded in. Body was painted Toyota 033. Using PPG Industrial Single Stage.





Interior was also painted 033 including dash.







While I was finishing up putting the interior back together, these showed up from Partsouq....




OEM Carb and Distributer along with some extra rotors.

Now that the dash is open, I started wiring in the extra 12v outlets / battery monitor / Bluetooth audio.

Was sunny today so.. time to get the old dirty carb out and install the new one. ( will rebuild the old one as a spare)


Was a super easy swap, cleaned up some metal parts while parts were out of the way.

I had purchased 2 FJ80 alternators a while back. I looked everywhere for the "rare" 90 AMP 80 series alternator for the 3FE.
Installed the used one on the Troopy to make sure it fits and drove it around for some time, worked perfectly till last week. So I decided to remove it and install the
new refurb I had. Sadly they were not the same shape. Very similar but the mounting tabs were too narrow.


The used alternator fit the 3F with zero modifications, but the new one needed some work. Luckily the front halves were the same... ish... I did some surgery and mated the rear shell of the old one with the new guts. Luckily it all came together. images below.









The alternator is charging perfectly, only thing is that the battery light comes on now.. Will figure it out.

Looks fantastic man! Really well done. I couldn't find extra rotors for the 3F distributor... what part number did you use?

Man, a wealth of info today. So many questions...

1. Are you keeping/maintaining the spaghetti of vacuum wires and switching valves?
2. Where did you source the used alternator? I'm assuming it was an 80A version. I've been trying to get confirmation that the 80A, external fan, will bolt right up to the 3FE.

Bought the spare rotor a while back, using the factory product number off of megazip. I heard people order the same number recently and get the incorrect rotor. Think its a t-shaped rotor from a 3FE.

Will keep an eye out for a spare rotor for you.

Vacuum speghetti wil be taken care of. The gas tank vent check valve has never worked...

( have spares, haven't changed it yet, just drilled a hole in the gas cap)

So the whole canister / air vent system hasn't been working at all, been thinking of totally getting rid of the whole system. Mainly for looks...:)

But since, I'm building a garage soon and the Troopy will be parked inside, I think the fumes in a hot garage might be a little too much...

I did move the vacuum solenoids to the back of the air vent plastic thing/eyesore, along with all the wiring. ( redid the wiring loom) Mainly making more room for a second battery / working space.

Will upload pics of how Im going to set it up.

Solenoids moved towards the brake booster.
Bluesea Safetyhub 100 installed for extra 12v bus.
Alternator will wire directly to the hub with a fat wire and 100amp fuse.
Going to run the standalone headlight harness off it as well.

Hub will run with a 1 gauge wire to the battery with a breaker.

Have a complete wiring diagram drafted. Will post it as soon as Its ready.

After re-doing the harness, I removed this jumble of wires that the previous owner had " wired in "

The used alternator was a 90A unit from a "cold climate" FJ80. They used them on the Lexus versions has well.

Yeah, I'm torn on the spaghetti of hoses and vacuum switches/solenoids. I had to jumper one of the vacuum hoses to kill a sporadic runaway acceleration issue... (note that the "way" I found to kill that issue when it would pop up was downshift and brake). So I know that VSV is now good. And I just found out the charcoal canister has a gaping hole in it... so also not working so hot.

One of your vacuum tubes has a screw in the end... so it's obviously been "reconfigured" at some point.

I'm trying to decide on tracing all the tubes and figuring out how it all works so as to bring it back to spec... or doing the equivalent of a "desmog" and pulling it all out and figuring out what to plug on the carb. And to top it off I have a second gas tank system...
 
Oh yes, I like this very much! Glad Dario did the paint job for you. He's a good guy, local and does excellent work. Did he happen to mention that he's painted another Troopy? I need to get by and see him at some point as I've found a small spot of rust near my windshield.

Really like the work that you've done. Way to go!
 
Thanks @umpqua ! It did take hime about 4 months more than he had promised... total of 7 months.... but he did do a great job. Thanks again for the recommendation.

He was very professional, painted a chip guard on the rockers as well as the interior floors / over the wheel wells. Also used Dominator Berliner inside there wheel wells.

Still needs the custom bumpers / sliders / interior tray. Would love to have it as an expedition vehicle / camper.... But I do a lot of custom concrete / furniture work on the side so I need a do-all truck for now...

Going for a "work truck / outdoor activity " vibe. Thinking of having a big toolbox made to fit the passanger side of the interior. Keep only the Driver Side front Jumper seat. Line the floor with a matte checkerboard aluminum plate. Even thinking of running a spare tire inside the cabin. Driver side rear. Will be drawing everything in 3D for fab work.

I've sent some other folks his way and have been told that the price has gone way up. Not asking what you paid but I bet he gave you a fair deal. The guy takes pride in his work and has an eye for detail. Plus, I just like him. I try to practice (butcher) my Spanish when I see him. Really glad it worked out. Love to see it sometime.
 
Lets just say it was almost 5 digits. He did surprise me with his first quote. Think he realizes that, these land cruises have a lot of hidden areas that rust can hide in. One warning I can give is if you bring a Land Crusier from the Middle East, check the body for rust. They are masters of covering things up. Very talented actually. Luckily my troopy had a few dents in the roof that were easily hammered out. Outer surface looked smooth, till we removed the headliner.

Hello, as someone who modified the mounts on their 3FE to fit a new 90amp alternator I am intrigued by your discovery here! So both of those alternators are 90 amp units and one just happened to have a wider mount? I have only ever seen the narrow mount 90 amp units that require the mounting mods.

Hey @MES, do you have a part number for that reman'd alternator? Is it 27060-61090-84?

Odd part it that I had two with the same model number but they had different mounting tabs. One was a direct fit, the other needed modding ( like in the pics)

The mystery thickens! Keep an eye out on Amazon for this alternator as well. I got two new-reman units on there for $40 each. I think they messed up with the pricing but worth a check every now and then. :) Also pricing straight from DENSO is usually pretty good.
