Wouldn't you loose ABS with the free wheeling hubs disengaged as your front axels are not turning so there would be no signal from the sensors

Good point.

Any chance you have directions in a pdf format? I went to Slee's site but couldn't find a link to directions. I would like to read them over as well.

I don't have the directions in PDF, couldn't find them on the site either. I bet someone at Slee will send them to you if you want.

If you have an FSM just follow along for the t-case dissasembly through taking off the intermediate rear housing and removing the viscous coupling. Then you press a bearing off the VC and reassemble. Some parts of the install can be tricky, but if you have any experience with t-case work it is nothing new. Took me an afternoon+evening with air tools, without a lift. First time I had been in the 80 series tcase.

My ABS was already acting up when I installed the part time kit, so I did not have any qualms about that. I rarely miss ABS...

C'mon, guys...

;)

Sorry Curtis, and to think I usually look up the big words just to make sure I get them right!

Easy to do in an afternoon
You will loose ABS but you will get it back when you lock your hubs, i don't feel that ABS is all that effective with larger tires anyways.
I lock the hubs before i even get in the truck if it looks crappy out.
I haven't noticed any real gas savings but thats not why i did the conversion.

Ok, I would like to know just what this "kit" includes.

I searched Slee's site but no mention of PT conv kit.

If its just hubs and the installation of the CDL switch how would that keep the front diff and axles from turning? (where the torque flow would be interrupted to the tire from the unlocked hubs, but the TC would have to be locked in order for torque to flow to the rear shaft)
It would still keep a signal going to the ABS though.

I am interested because I'd like to do somewhat with my Cruiser what I can do with my 4runner, I know the TC's are different but I could H2/L2 (summer, dry)....H4/L4 (anytime)....and AWD [transfer case differentiation], (winter, slush, foul weather, rain).

The kit changes the T/C from Full time to Part Time, by removing the differential part and changing some things around. You need the CDL button to switch from 2WD to 4WD. AWD is no more.

Hubs are optional.

When the 1FZE was presented by Toyota in our country in 1993, I was invited with the press and had the pleasure to speak with one of the engineers of the developing team.

The first question I asked him was why we didn´t get the same Full Time version as the USA model and ours got the part time with hubs ?

His answer was blunt: for third world or undeveloped country´s, the part time was better, less complicated to service, more power to the wheels and that I should be happy to have it, period.

It was around 2002 that our top trim 80 series came standard with the full time transmission and all my friends who replaced their older Part Time model with the latest Full Time, hate them, all were dissapointed with the Full Time perfomance and it´s lack of power.

If you were to leave off the locking hubs the whole conversion seems moot.
The kit includes what amounts to a spool that replaces the center differential.
Spike, so glad i could amuse you.

Exactly, if converting to part time then hubs would be mandatory in my opinion since the wear and tear issue is one of the main concerns.

I am going to email Christo and see if I can get some instructions so I can figure out how it works without turning the front shaft.

If you have access to a fax machine i can send you a copy of mine.

PM sent, toll free fax...at least for the states it is :)

I was trying to figure out if you have to drop the entire Tcase or simply the rear extension (where the VC resides). The picture from Slee shows only a spool and no other Tcase internal hardware so I was just curious!!

Ahh, got it. I remember removing the VC when I replaced the rear bearing seal so I thought, this is way too easy! It sounds like that the VC is removed AND the spool is replacing the actual center diff innerds.

The process it's pretty easy and simple .. when you pull apart the VC you have a HF2A .. full time but without a VC .. 4 hours job.
