Hey everyone, I’m replacing the parking brake and transfer case seal on my truck.

I’ve got a new seal housing part from Valley hybrids which has dual seals. I also have a new refurb parking brake drum. Comparing the two of them side-by-side, I’m curious, which one you all would go with.

Option A is the original drum, there is some pitting on the seal surface, but not too much in the way of grooves:

Option B is the refurb drum, looks much nicer, but there is a slight groove on the seal surface:

Which would y’all go with?

Here is another shot of them side-by-side:

A parking brake drum should be gnarly and crusty inside for superior holding power.
Haha mine was narly and rusty and crusty. I popped the clutch in low gear with ebrake on and it grabbed drum real good and twisted off the 4 little bolts that hold the backing plate on and rapped my ebrake cable all around the shaft as it spun stuck to the drum Not cool. Keep it clean.

When I had Georg build my H55F and split transfer case and had ready to ship I called to see if a drum was in the crate. The wrote another invoice and added to the crate. I put new shoes and internal parts and set up and set on the first step of the adjuster.

Why in the heck would you do that? I am just going by something JimC shared with me once. But what does he know?

I would take that one in the top picture, and rig up a way to chuck it into a drill press, get it spinning and hold a piece of 400 grit on it. I just did that yesterday with the crankshaft pulled for my Triumph and it worked perfectly.

I suspect that double seal unit puts the seals in a slightly different location than factory, no? In which case the grooves you have in the factory one will probably be irrelevant because they won't be under the new seals. I would use the original one after you clean it up with some fifteen hundred grit sandpaper.

ended up going w the new one + a speedi sleeve over the groove.

Im sure I did this in the jankiest way possible, left the flange on there but tested the fit and there was no interference.

Ordered that red toyota FIPG sealant, but they sent me the wrong one. Ended up using this permatex gear oil gasket maker (same stuff i used on the paper housing between the xfer case and the speedo housing). Hope it works!
