Saturday morning the temp. dropped considerably. 16 deg. F (-9C) at sun-up. Had to crawl through the back to start the troopy as my door was frozen shut and I didn't want to risk tearing the door seal forcing it open. Hit the glow plugs twice and cranked up the hand throttle.

Broke camp and drove out around 1030, made a detour to the canyon over-look. Shot looking into the canyon towards our camp. You can see the snow covered boulders in the river that make up the beginnings of Five-mile rapid at higher flows.

We were camped about here:

Overall a successful trip, hope to keep this tradition going for years to come.
Alright, that does it. We've got to get together. The dog. The Troopy. The cooking outside. Beers. Cocktails. Left behind river shoes. All of it.

My Thanksgiving plan was to drive to Alvord but the forecast was for a foot of snow blowing sideways. I've literally been there done that in that area at Christmas. Had a fun time but I was there before the snow started. Went to the Mt. Hood National Forest instead this year (pic attached).

I actually thought about you yesterday as I looked at the "AluCab" advertisement on the pop top. It's taken be a while to come back to this but I've come up with something that I think you're "really" going to appreciate. It has a certain white trash look to it which I always find appealing. You can be on the lookout but I'll make sure you see it.

Five Mile? I've been on that rapid but thought it was on the Salmon. Is your pic from the Jarbridge? I love that country!

Awsome shots. Is that a reserved camp site? Your friends brought an entire house, even artwork! How long were they there? I can't imagine setting all that up for a weekend.

No, not reserved, just ten million+ acres of BLM land here in Idaho, first come, first served, I think the camping limit is 14-days, but we were only there 4 days, 3 nights. It looks like a lot to set up, but goes pretty quick, took us about two hours to break camp on Saturday. A bit longer setting up (for them) as they did it solo.

Five Mile is on the Bruneau, the Jarbidge feeds into the Bruneau, the Main Bruneau starts just after the West Fork and the Jarbidge confluence at Indian Hot Springs. The pics are all of the Bruneau, the Jarbidge is higher elevation, a bit smaller, not as deep of a canyon.

I've lobbied for an Alvord TITO even though it's not in the Owyhees, but have been shot down because of the drive. It's probably closer to me than to you though. I haven't been there since they've improved the hot springs and made it a pay-site, hope it's not too improved.

I'm up for a rendezvous, let me know if/when you're in the area and I'll make another trip to the desert. I love it out there too.

I haven't floated the Jarbridge or Bruneau yet but it's on my list. I'd like to go with someone that's been on it before. Know anyone?

The quality of the experience at Alvord HS is totally dependent upon who the caretaker at the time happens to be. I've been a couple of times since it became paid....the first time the caretaker was a dog Nazi. The second time (surprised there was one) the caretaker was dog friendly.

Since it's become pay they've hauled in some shipping containers for flatlanders to use. There's a heated bathroom and an inside place where you pay. Gravel parking lot. The tubs themselves are exactly the same.

I thought I'd find you on here. I hate to introduce myself this way as I thought I was an admirer of your 70. However, my FZJ80 and I just had the extreme displeasure of following you down Bogus Basin road. You've been putting off that ring job far too long! My vintage ski sweater now smells like 40wt blue smoke and my head is reeling. Please consider that rebuild sooner to better our shared environment.
Happy Cruising.

Sorry.
I don't think its rings. It only does it when I idle down from Bogus unloaded. I've added some fuel treatment to clean the injectors, I may try some oil additive to de-glaze the cylinders. I've been looking for a good Toyota Diesel shop to take it too. As long as the engine is warm, it doesn't smoke at all. It's just when its cold and not loaded. It doesn't smoke a bit on the way up the mountain.

Maybe valve guides, but what do I know? Just ran across these guys in Garden City: Home | SN Land Cruisers
They do diesel conversions, so likely know a thing or two. They're currently doing a cool 70 troopy body on an 80 frame with a GM 6.2 for somebody with deep pockets.
Much luck.

Blue smoke and cold “could” be rings. Does it happen on start?

long coasting and blue smoke on an old diesel isn’t surprising. Temps cool down a bit as the engine isn’t working hard. It’s basically loading up on a long coast. I’m guessing getting back on the throttle cleans it up. Altitude can cause this more.

possible turbo seals as well, but my guess is just loading up if it only does this coasting.

Are you noticing oil level decreasing?

No oil loss. It does it on start, when cold, but cleans up pretty quick as soon as I start driving. It does clean up when I can get on the throttle.

This road down from the ski hill is a notorious slow winding road. There are slow vehicle pull-outs, but there are times when someone will go 20 mph, and not use the pullouts, which ends up causing a line-up of cars for as far as you can see, if I put it in neutral and coast, it will go away, but if I'm in 2nd or third, it loads up and blows blue.

Sounds normal to me for a 30yr old diesel using much older technology. I grew up in the mountains. Only way in/out was curvy mountain passes and slow car pull offs. I know exactly what you are saying. My guess is your temp is cooling down quite a bit as well.
nothing to worry about, unless you are following that diesel:rofl:

Temp gage doesn't move until I'm almost home. Cardboard blocking off the radiator too.

I hitch-hiked up today. I used to hitch up the hill all the time, hate that every other car is an SUV or pickup with one person in it, me included lately.

I changed the oil the other day and decided I should look at my rear brakes while I was at it as they needed adjustment, but weren't adjusting...pulled the rear drums to find this on the driver's side:

Looks like the parking brake cable stuck and cooked the grease out of the bearings.

Once I cleaned it up, it wasn't as bad as I first thought, only seal that needed replacing was the outer stub axle seal. NAPA had the shoes and seal (same as an 85 FJ60)

Ordered a parking brake cable from Partsouq, showed up yesterday. Should have ordered a couple of the brackets too, ended up just wire-wheeling and painting mine.

Also ordered new auto-adjust cables, of course I didn't get them in the same shipment and they got hung up in shipping for a day.

One of mine was good and one was hashed, just replaced both.

Had to drop the fuel tank about an inch to fish the new cable in as there is a body flange that hangs down and the cable wouldn't slide past it. All of the hardware under this thing is very crusty. I used a liberal amunt of WD-40 and anti-seize and my impact driver running the bolts back and forth plus some wire brushing.

Got lucky and didn't break any bolts and was able to run the fuel tank strap bolt to it's limit and get enough room to fish the new cable in, fuel tank support strap pics:

and my new puppy was of no help, had to stick him inside the truck as he kept wandering off, then found him chewing on the parking brake switch pig tail...

It's nice to have a working parking brake again, and NO double-pump on the brakes.

Also had my 24V-12V dc converter die again. Only lasted a few months this time. Samlex was good and replaced it under warranty again. They looked over my wiring and said it all looks good. Not sure what killed it this time (or the last time) but if this one doesn't last, I'll need another solution for 12v power. May need to figure out a bracket for a 12V alternator where the AC compressor would mount and add a third battery.

My dogs aren't any help at turning wrenches either. Brakes, rust and cables are all on my not so fun list, but very satisfying to get taken care of. On a side note, are you going on the snow run this weekend?

No snow run for me, I got a last minute invite to go into the Williams Peak yurt out of Stanley tomorrow through Sunday, backcountry boarding. I was going to drive the troopy and sleep in it tomorrow night as we're skinning in Friday morning, but its going to be 3 deg. in Stanley Friday and no insulation in the Troopy, I'm opting for the motel tomorrow night.

The parking brake cable was only $56, thought I could get it from Cruiser Outfitters quicker, but they didn't have it in stock. Ordered it on Friday, got it on Tuesday, so not too bad.
