Overlanding is the same as camping, right?

The aussie bros dont bother me even with the ludicrously expensive builds and crazy stuff because they dont take themselves that serious and theyre clearly just there to have some fun, the EO type overlanders are just way to serious to me.

This is how I look at it too. The US 'tubers seem to take themselves way too seriously, whereas the Ozzie's are just crackin' jokes and having a good time.

But I think maybe the explanation is on Expedition Overlands YouTube channel:

Overlanding has become a marketing term to sell a lifestyle to people. It's like watching a commercial for products to make me feel like a secure well traveled badass.

This is why I bristle at the term.

Camping, wheeling and taking road trips on the other hand, are just fun things for people to do.

That said, I gotta finish putting my rig together so I can set off on a roadtrip to Oaxaca. Or maybe I'll get some sponsors and put a big expedition sticker on my truck and make a YouTube channel to sell you products to make you feel as cool as me.

Preach brother. We're all here to listen.

I'm jealous at anyone that has the bandwith and wherewithal to read through this thread to find post to comment on 3 years later. I enjoy the Aussie 4WD content and I certainly enjoy XOverland content and the travel I've been fortunate to do with them over the years. Do something cool, film it, product it and toss it on YouTube, I'll be sure to comment :D

I'm sorry to have offended you. I've never seen expedition overland I just thought the description of the channel was apropos. I'm sure you had fun and that's great.

I'll let the slight about my free time slide.

I have pretty much no interest in making YouTube vids.

Yo @cruiseroutfit It can be hard to interpret an emoji ... But is that haha as in mocking me for apologizing for offending you? I don't want to make any of this personal so I'm trying to leave space open to be gracious here.

@kirvesmies - send me a message with your address and I'll send you some free o charge when I get back from my overland expedition, errr I mean roadtrip.

You're seemingly hung up on this entire naming convention. I'm neither offended nor in need of an apology. You're saying you've not even seen the XO content the previous gent found "way to serious", so I'll weigh your opinion as such. They have a successful entertainment offering (free on YouTube so you get what you pay for :D ) and inspire many. IMO the world needs more of that. I'll blissfully sit around a campfire with campers, roadtripers, wheelers, overlanders, rock-crawlers, desert racers, etc, etc, etc. I'd avoid sitting around that same campfire with anyone worried about what the other person feels they are doing. Your results may vary.

Just one last question before I go ... since I'm heading to Mexico does anyone know any Marines I could hire to ride along and be in charge of my security?

I don't know who "hires" a marine to go to Mexico but the hardest part may be your company not security :D

You should be fine bro. If you are really nervous, just register your trip with the embassy/department of state before you go

Thank you. It's all good. I've done this trip before and am looking forward to it. I was just poking fun at the folks making overly dramatic content about Mexico.

As for @cruiseroutfit , all I can say is wow.

The best explanation I can come up with for all the personal insults is that you're truly offended. That was not my intention and I am sorry that my comment about EO calling themslves a gllobal lifestyle brand had that impact on you. Still, the insults are not cool.

We are all just trying to drive cruisers and have a good time.

Doesn't change what I think about all the marketing and pretentious dramatic content that's developed around "overlanding". It annoys me, but I don't take any of that personally.

It does inspire a bit of satire though. Maybe I'll start my own channel. I'll call it Broverlander. I dunno. I'll have to put some thought into my global lifestyle brand and maybe buy a selfie stick.

Ahhhh, so your commentary about the content I've been involved with for many years (XOverland) is just "poking fun" but you label my replies as "personal insults". Hello pot, meet kettle. I long for the days you were "moving on". :D To elevate my demeanor from offended to "truly offended" is misleading at best. I don't know you, I'm honestly not super interested in getting to know based on this convo and know that you're opinion about content you claim to have never watched isn't really interesting to me on any level. Look, I don't care if you like the free content XOverland offers via YouTube. But I'd rather hang out around the campfire with a cosplay guy wearing a zoo-keeper outfit and pith helmet, than a person that is tragically hung up on what others call their hobby/lifestyle. Shall we both "move on"? :D

And yet you'd no doubt still go out of your way to help him out with parts, help, and/or sage advice if his butthurt butt was in a pickle and that's something that I respect about you even though we've never met! Keep on being awesome.

I poked fun at the description of the channel. Which is quite pokeable IMO. I didn't mean any offense until you started the insults.

I haven't watched XO and I didn't know it was important work to you.

But if XO really does have an episode that starts with a self defense training montage, it probably is not my cup of tea.

And there's nothing wrong with that.

True. I'm pretty critical of efforts to take something fun and authentic like overlanding and turn it into something pretentious and exclusive like a lot of companies and influencers are doing.

Speaking of which, I was trying to think of a way to sooth my aching butt as @Eyedaho so thoughtfully diagnosed when I wondered what better salve exists than the overland expedition baja special?

It was not exactly what I was expecting. But rather than discuss that here in @SHIfTHEAD 's tech thread, maybe I'll post a review in the social forum.
