UPDATE>>>>Here is the plan for this Caravan heading to the Rally:

Meet at noon on Thursday the 9th at the QT of Hamilton Mill Pkwy (exit 120) and I-85 (2460 Hamilton Mill Pkwy, Dacula, GA 30019).

This should put us about 3 - 3 1/2 hours from the event campground. Post up or message me if you want to join us so that I will know who all to expect so that we don't leave anyone behind. I am looking forward to a nice weekend in the Ashville mountains. Hopefully it will be much cooler than Atlanta these days!

Scott

I am officially registered for the event (discounted registration ends soon)and now want to try to put together a caravan up to Ashville. A pack of rigs on the freeway is always much more fun than driving up alone.

I think this will be a very fun event and hope to have many of you join me up there. I am looking forward to seeing the varying flavors of rigs that will be in attendance.

I would prefer to leave the Atlanta area around noon on Thursday, June 9th. It looks to be about a 4hr. drive from the middle of Atlanta to Marion, NC.

Anyone care to join me and the Cruiser as we head north up 85?

The official site is here: http://www.overlandrally.com/Overland_Rallies_and_Workshops/Southeast.html

The discount code for early registration (which I think has been extended to 5/4) is: orwexpomember1

Scott,
While you are driving up the interstate in airconditioned comfort, have a laugh at my expense. That week is BRAG; Carolyn and I are riding from Atlanta to Savannah. So by Thursday, I will probably be sore and stiff grinding forward to the finish on Saturday.

Have a good trip and keep every one posted with the details.

Wish I could have made this trip. Looks like a great time. I'll be where it's hotter in Orlando... hope the beer is cold!

Steen, I was in Orlando last week and it was consistently 3-4 degrees warmer than Atlanta each day. Didn't bother me as I didn't really set foot out of the resort for three days due to meetings. Let's grab lunch soon!

I can't get the time off work to leave on Thursday, but I'll be driving up Friday afternoon to camp and then attend the festivities on Saturday, with a return trip planned for late Saturday night.

If anyone has a similar schedule and want to come, I have room for one passenger and your goodies. I'll be driving the Tacoma up. Let me know.

this would be a cool event attend but not at $150 to learn how to camp. I wonder how many attendees are staying in a hotel :hhmm:

You have to look at the bigger picture here......SWAG. RAFFLES. PRIZES. Worth the chance (to me) to get out and meet some folks, and maybe come home with anything from a free t-shirt to a new roof top tent - who knows.

The good news is, being an Overland Journal subscriber - I paid nada. Thanks for improving my winning chances, though. :-)

not knocking the event at all, just the price tag for the "under privileged" non member. It really would be a good event but GSMTR had all of those things for half the price and better wheeling but i know that's not what it's really all about. I guess you could say it's not my cup of tea :flipoff2:

Anyway, camping in 95* weather doesn't sound too appealing either especially when the place has no showers or real bathrooms, better hold yer nose going in!--:zilla:

I've seen you camp. You do need lessons.

We all had a good time.
It was hot, we brought our own shower and potty, and laughed at the stuck Toyota... ;)

The only question I missed during the challenge was my GVWR and loaded weight. It was a good time. The presentations were extremely well done.

I saw the big difference between the Overland Rally and GSMTR as the classes; first aid, photography, beginner 4WD, advanced 4WD, cartography, and the presentations including Shirley Deane (sp) and the various expedition slide shows along with the vendor displays. GSMTR like most wheeling events are just for wheeling where as the Overland Rally had wheeling, vendors, classes and presentations.

Yeah I don't think classes would do very well at GSMTR. There is already enough going on and most of those folks have been wheeling for a long time. I would have liked to have a vendor day though. Something where they could bring out what they do and display it. I'm sure as the years go by the real potential of that park will be realized.

That being said the Overland Rally ought to be at Golden Mountain. It would be perfect for that venue.

I agree that Gold Mountain would be perfect for it. I will actually lobby for next year's event to be held there (if they decide to hold this annually).

As far as the classes, think about it a little more. Does GSMTR get any new wheelers each year? I would think so. I would also think that it could be a little intimidating for the new people and they may spend the week nervous around everyone else. I know that when I was new, I certainly appreciated all the support from the veterans. The classes are not mandatory and you can go out on the trails all day if you want to. I do think that they were much appreciated by those that decided to attend. I like the idea of having them available. I also think that you would be surprised at the amount of photography interest the off road community has. I only had 8 people come to my financial planning class (which was 8 more than I expected). This class was geared toward planning for extended trips globally and domestically. I do think that those 8 people were happy to have the opportunity. With that being said, this is not a class that should be offered at GSMTR.

I do think that a basic and advanced 4wd class would be great to have at any multiple day off road event. If we want to continue to grow the sport, and grow it in the right way to avoid land use issues, then classes would be a great option for those of all experience levels - especially newer drivers.
