Crikey's , how did you ever let it get that bad to start with.
Regular washing will help prevent things like this happening.
I've never seen an 80 with rear heating, where do the outlets exit?
Can you just ditch the rear heater?
We worry much more about our A/C working properly.

It's that little vent on the bottom/back of the center console. Powered by a dash toggle switch.

If I were to consider bypassing the rear heater I think I would re-route the lines over to the left-hand side of the truck and fit a large heater core or similar in the open area under the floorboad on the driver's side and turn it into an extra radiator for increased cooling.....

I bought toyota hardlines....scratched my chin awhile, crawled around under the truck, scratched my chin, opened the hood poked around, hemmed and hawwed.......Then....hung the hard lines on the wall of my garage and spliced in some heater hose....RICK IF YOU HAVN"T BOUGHT THE HARDLINES YET CONTACT ME.....'cause for you they would be cheap...

My spliced repair has held up for about 2.5 years sans problemos

His new ones are already in the truck.

I've got a question:

Is the heater hose shown potentially another candidate for preventative maintenance? Like the Pesky Heater Hose and the Firewall Heater Hose? Should all heater hoses be replaced as PM?

Those particular hoses are not serviced seprately by Toyota. The only way to get them is by buying the pipe assembly. Of couse they can be removed and you can look around for aftermarket hoses that have similar moulded bends and substitute them.

well the PHH is a near required PM item becuase it has a history of failure, the PHH is the first hose to see hot water coming out of the head and is the hottest part in the heater system,

replacing those other hoses as PM at this point in a cruisers life not a bad thing thing but it could also be called overboard as they do not have a widespread history of failure like the PHH does maybe your PM $'s and time would be better put elsewhere.

take a look at them if they seam bad replace them, wile you are there look for rotten hard lines like Rick had. repalce anything suspect.

When I get a chance I’m going under and taking a look at the hard lines. We just brought the 80 back from NY so I’m scared.

Yes, the new lines are in and for at least 1 season they will look better than Tools R Us'. One dumb ass mistake I made was to use pliers to get the hoses to break free from the rear heater tubes. I didn't want to cut the hose length wise too deep for fear of cutting into the nipple. Well, no fear the rear core is junk. Those nipples are made of copper and got bent all to hell. Luckily Cruiserparts.net is just up the street a ways in NH and I'll have a used core here tomorrow.

It might help others if those who have bypassed the hardlines post some pics so others might get an idea of how to approach this problem if faced with it.

I think he's talking about the area above the frame under the drivers seat, there is plenty of room for a good sized cooler and with some flying stone shielding would be well protected. My 4runner had a transfer cooler under there and never had a problem with it.

I was thinking about tapping the oil pump output on my 80's transfer and plumbing it to a cooler mounted in that location. Also thought about moving the trans cooler there and mounting a thermostat controlled fan on it. Don't know how well it would work, the air down there is hotter, preheated by the motor.

I LOVE the desert................

Proof I'm a moron!!! I was honestly confused about what the treat after dinner had to do with this thread!! LOL, Maybe it's cause I have so many kids always asking me to get them desert and move them out of the desert, I don't know.. I'm an total id 10 t.....

As a side note, the desert is nice, I got all the paint pulled off the rear of my 40, down to bare metal and even with the rain there's no rust!

I didn't have to pull the transmission to change it.........;)

But you did anyway huh?

OK...I'm dreading my mechanics call back. My son's '93 hit the H-mark today. He had coolant all over the driveway. We heard hissing and seen steam coming from the rear middle of the engine. This 80 originated in Lincoln, NE. I hope it's not these lines.

Hope the engine's OK. Not sure how long he drove in H. The air did cut out though it works now. Oh boy!

So anybody have an FAQ way of saying how to bypass the rear heater? That would be a nice addition to the FAQ. I have a bad leak in mine, and its coming from the part on top of the CATS, there seems to be some rubber hose running under the heat shield.

I thought I posted this pic here,

https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=16639

here it is again. The hose in the center and the hose coming off the bottom of the 180-degree, metal bend in the center, are the hoses that bypass. The two hoses that you can see entering the firewall go to the front heater. The one on the picture's right is just above one of the lines to the rear heater, it's kind of hard to get to.
