Don't forget Webelk6 here in WI, to build one you need a permit, and it must be over a vented holding tank so that it can be pumped. If it leaks into the ground, your screwed because they know you have one because you had to pull the permit to build it.

I say crap in the bag and haul it home with you, or throw it in the dumpster at the nearest county park.

We actually have the current "poopy palace" near the creek so we can watch the humming birds while answering natures call. But I will look into permits.

Where my land is , there are numerous amish , and they actually sell outhouses for about $200 bucks. Part of me want to do that rather than buying all the lumber and building an out of square palace.:hillbilly:

I mentioned composting toilet previously in this post, I ended up going that route and from experience I can say it is great.

I cant imagine the idea of sucking out a tank, or rather paying someone to do it every so often. And when I thought about the idea of going around the laws in my area and shuffling an outhouse around every year or two and filling in the hole...Man, that would be a lot of work too. And you would always have in the back of your mind, that spot in your yard, or 20years from now...those 10/15 spots in the yard. No thanks.

3yrs with a compost toilet and it works well, if you follow the advice of the manufacturer and are diligent about the composting material that you add and follow the instructions they work great. Also good for the environment, and it is the environment at your back door!

I also have a memory of my great grand parents old house in NJ. There was a spot, or I should say a rather large pit in the back yard. It had formed over a long, long time of out house useage...it was referred to as "The Glory Hole", and it was to be feared.

Amish make good stuff though, can you attest to that? $200 is practically materials and hardware these days. But, a cement holding tank would not be too cheap and it would be hard to do yourself without experience, even the materials to build it would be probably $100-200 min., I would guess that the septic guys are pulling in a pretty penny, god knows they earn it.

Good luck.

drums

I actually gave a friend of mine 2 55gal empty paint drums. He then dug a hole, buried them, hooked up a 40 gal rubbermaid with a hose leading to an actual toilet.

The drums are set up like a septic for solids and liquids. I can definately say that he is not in code or pulled permits:).

Needless to say, I will NOT choose that route.

Yes, unfortunately for the environment and the beings that live and thrive in it...

Your buddy burried paint containers with toxins. that basically equals irreversable damage and poisoning of the area and perhaps any area that is adjasened to it, downhill or any which way the ground water and runoff moved the poisons etc.

Your buddy is an idiot and unfortunately there are a lot of idiots out there that are doing such things. Sad, but true.

Lost Coast

The little ranger station on the cliff at the end of the narrow dirt road, some 20miles North of the only touristy town on the beach - forgot the name

Outhouse

A bird made a nest on the toilet paper roll.

Has fledglings in the nest.

Entertaining to watch.

and they are much softer than Costco toilet paper, I'll say that!

nah, j/k, brought my own paper... :)

Since most of the other questions have been answered..... the 2 Holer is usually built for one of 2 reasons. Good ol' fashioned volume (usually the result of a great view), or one grownup hole and one kiddie hole.

I did find out that the reason for the 2 holer is , one is for men, the other for women:D

Another good reason I guess. But in a practical application.... That usually doesn't come into play :D I grew up in an area full of outhouses, used dozens of them, never saw a labeled hole.... :D FYI about a 50/50 split 2 holers to 1 holers in my experience. Of course most of the places I went had kids too..... hence the 2 holer....

I should also mention he has 20+ acres with nobody around him for at least 40 acres, but I do agree with him poisoning his area.

I guess I must be too much of a city boy cause i don't think I'd be able to go in one of those things :o

I have a hard enough time p!ssin in a portapotty

Trust me , if nature calls, you would use one.;)

I find outhouses much less disgusting than port-a-potties.... :D An outhouse is someones bathroom.... a port-a-pottie is everyones bathroom.... Hehehe
just think how bad porta potties are at a parking lot/sporting event..... Outhouse anytime.

Ground water can travel far....

The guys farm down the road will receive the poisons in several years. Like seconds from now in the relative span of time compared to the age of the earth. Also, if your friend ever sells his land, and someone finds out what he done buried, he could end up paying a whole lot more to have it cleaned up. It is not OK, that in a few decades no one will know...that they are actually injesting poisons cause' they put a garden downhill from the old buried paint cans.

I have 56acres and thank my lucky stars that it comprises the whole top of a hill. Basically impossible for any neighbors, (for the sake of saving a few bucks), to contaminate the ground and water I will use in the future to provide the food that makes me.

why not a small septic system? but you would need a water source.

most the old waterfront septics here were nothing more than a 55 gallgon drum and a pipe that went out to low low tide.....many of them are still in use(they shouldnt be)

That is exactly correct. There is a small town called Lynxville Wi. Behind this town is a creek leading into the Miss. River. One year there was a huge flood, and suddenly behind all of these houses, 55 gal drums were floating everywhere along with people having not septic system.

I think the concept was the drums held solids, liquids soaked in. So the other comments about the drums, I believe were without knowledge. Basically a field is fertilized with chemicals, cow****, etc.
I know this contaminates spuds ground water worse than someone burying drums. Just my 2 cents.

I have to resurrect this thread because my frame off is done:clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:.

My :princess: was just on my case to do the outhouse thing. My daughter found a thread on the "hole" digging. 15' deep:eek: was the stat.

I still have to check into permits, as we have until Mem. Day weekend to get this thing underway.

Back in the seventies many bars (Taverns) in the PNW had toilets that were holes which dumped straight into the harbor.

kickin around the idea of just having a porta potty dropped off when we are there. Problem is , is it gets hotter than hell inside there in the summer....
