Two-Holer

What a great thread!

We've had a two-holer in the same spot at our hunt camp for the last 20 years. Dug it deep with a backhoe initially, and have been good with the quicklime ever since. Have dug it out once in those 20 years, and it was just composted material. Well...we did let it sit for a few months before digging! It gets used heavily twice a year by groups of 15-20 guys, then only periodically by family and friends. A well-done outhouse will last for years.

We have a composting toilet at another camp. They work great, but the charm ain't the same!

An outhouse is soo much nicer to use than a porta potty. If it was my place I'd dig the hole and build the house. Same concept as cat holes or a trench, just way more nice to use. If someone shows up asking questions about permits and such I'd just play ignorant...

I do live in LA, in a little area called, well, Frogtown, and no, no outhouse experience here.

A third of my life in Oklahoma, where said structure was built- at my Dad's farm.

A third of my life as an Airforce brat- nine states.

I come from a long line of poor, ignorant farm folk. I miss the farm, but I have the other two covered.

Aunts and uncles on both sides would be so proud of their new indoor plumbing, but us guys would continue to use the outside facilities when we could.

Perhaps all this just reminds me of the freedoms I enjoyed back then. And if I ever get a chance, I'll build another one. And use it.

Dale

I have been to frogtown :grinpimp: I live not to far from there.

I use out houses all the time out in the desert

1. How deep should the hole be?
hows 5'' sound when it gets near the top you can fill it up
also you can put it on skids so you can move it when the time comes. then you can burn it or move it.

2. Should the bottom be line with pea gravel etc.?
no I think it will just clog up

3. Why do they have 2 holers?:)
I have thought about this same Q, better distribution and a bigger hole it will last longer

4. Does one or should you put lime, etc. every visit?ut this I think
Yes it it keeps the bugs and smell down.
