I read the wheelbase is 137.3 inches. That is insane. This is a platform for the poser crowd (sorry, trying to be as nice as possible).

that's shorter than a dual cab tacoma and they seem to do all right on the trail. I mean its a dual cab truck they are going to have a long wheel base. It most likely has the shortest wheel base of any dual cab currently on the market.

Is my 80 a money pit that I should sell and focus on the 40? Yes or No?

That's something only you can answer really... only you know your financials, mechanical ability and time to have two cruisers.

I'm guessing the 80 is your DD?

If you can't afford the up keep on the 80 and want to sink the money into the 40 then go for it. An early 00's camry can be had for dirt cheap and will be rock solid reliable while you fix up the 40. This may be the way I go after I fix the 100. Sell the all-trac, 100 and LS430 buy a cheap camry or accord and focus on the bronco for a bit.

Agreed, it really depends on the purpose of each and what direction you want each to go.

@lt1fire I see your point, it really is a personal thing. I guess what I'm concerned about is if I fix the head gasket/ rebuild the engine, how many other things are going to continue to break. And yeah i DD the 80.

That's always a gamble.... but generally an 80 series land cruiser is pretty dang reliable when maintenance is kept up on. The one issue people bring up is the HG and that's already happened. If thinking of selling factor in cost of fixing HG and price you can get for it and not fixing HG and price you would sell it for. 80's with blown HG don't sell for very much though.

Yota parts are always more expensive if something does need to be addressed but do last longer than most aftermarket parts.

If you are willing to drive @FJ60Cam has one he is pulling that I bet he'd let go for a deal. It is comig out of a running truck I believe.

Copied From Cottonland 80 series thread

‘94 IFZ-FE & transmission. 259K. $1000 OBO. Emphasis on OBO.

It’s gettting pulled soon if you want to drive it first. It’s greasy, the check engine light came on (but went back off), and makes a weird rattle that sounds more like a loose shield somewhere than internal noise. Seemed
To rev up fine. The power steering pump is noisy. It’s greasy.

I can also pull the head and have it rebuilt if you need one of those.

I don’t have time to pull parts, clean anything, diagnose, do a compression test, or send off for a Black Stone oil analysis. But it’s here if you want to.

Hurry. One way or another, this won’t last long.

Is my 80 a money pit that I should sell and focus on the 40? Yes or No?

Hi, my name is Travis and I have a Land Cruiser addiction. Now that it's out of the way, I have DD my 80 for years and rebuilt the engine a while back. Everything was fantastic for about six months and then the wiring gremlins side lined the 80. Thirty wires became one and then the issues began. It still sits in my driveway 14 months later with a brand new wiring harness balled up in the box beno sent it in. I have since bought a 2003 camry 5 speed, a 60 series, and a 100 series, sold a Volvo station wagon and an old GMC pick up.

I can attest that the camry is great as far as maintenance goes (there is none) but there is no soul. It is, as CDan has put it, an appliance.

The 60 is currently scratching my wrenching itch, is a smile a minute (unless I am waiting on parts), a throw back to simpler times, and easy to work on. Not a daily driver for me but I can easily see how it could be done. I love this truck!

The 100 series replaced the Volvo (I hated that thing the day we bought it nine years ago and nothing changed) and is quickly going from my wife's daily to my go to vehicle on the weekends for adventure. She does not feel like she has her own vehicle because I take it too much.

With that background and personal experience, the steps I am preparing to do is get the 80 back on the road as my DD, sell the Camry and 60, and use the surplus cash to maintain both the 80 and 100.

Wife drives 20K a year and after my job transfer back home in January I will be under 30K a year.

It is a personal decision for anyone in your position and I am glad the 40 is staying no matter which direction you go.

I love my 80 and would DD it but the cost of gas is prohibitively expensive. I've dumped quite a bit into the 80 and will continue to do so. I love driving it on the weekends and during the week. I have a GTI for DD purposes. It is fuel efficient, comfortable, and fast and while I want to have both, I would sell the GTI to keep the 80.

@40LandCruising sounds like you just need to buy @Comet camry and the motor from Cam.

Comet. Thats rediculous. Keep that camry. I love my 32mpg stealth mode. 40yr old white guy in a camry. Who? What? Where? I mean which one. :grinpimp:

But I did consider trading it on a hundred lol

Btw if you dont beat the crap out of it and do maintain it, it will last longer :)

And then we wont have to refer to the rapid depletion of a recently required solid rig as ‘andersoning’ it. Garrett would probably appreciate that.

Jason, I like where you are going with this. The 5 speed in the camry is fun. Just today, I was doing burn outs in the back of my shop. Rev limiter is hilarious.

What?!? A real mans camry? 4 or 6?

There was a VA guy in 80s tech with a 6cyl 5spd with es330 18’s and set of coilovers. Ill admit admiring it.

4 banger with no mods whatsoever. Son was learning to drive it on the interstate a few years ago and that's when I realized it had the rev limiter. 70 miles per hour, check mirrors, look over the shoulder, signal, and REVVVVV, whop, REVVVV, whop, REVVVV. Goober downshifted from 5th gear to 2nd gear. As soon as he got it back under control we laughed uncontrollably for about five miles. Now he is a pro!

Edit: If ever there was a teachable moment to not kick yourself for a mistake, that was it!

@jynx I could buy a used drivetrain but my concern about that is having the exact same thing happen. I think my plan as of now is when I get home to winston Dec 12 (I’m at college at clemson now) I’m pulling the head and dropping the pan and assessing the situation. Depending on the verdict I plan to either just do the HG or rebuild the entire motor. Fortunately one of my best friends dad’s runs a old school machine shop that builds mainly race motors for the local circle track and high spot drag engines, so I have cheap machining and expertise on my side.

@Comet I am also a Landcruiser addict! And I’m happy to say I’ll sell my kidney if it means keeping the 40 so it’s here to stay. A 4banger 2wd yota trick definetly could be in my future as a DD though...

@jfz80 andersoning it... has a nice ring to it

Anyone happen to look at the ‘65 tin top on charlotte craigs and still have sellers contact or any truck info. Ad expired this am. Asking for a friend :)
