Hey everybody, new to site. Just bought a 77 FJ40. Has been painted beige but inside door panel and a few other spots i've noticed what looks like a brown color. Now the Toyota color chart says in 77 Olive 637 was an option. I've seen all the threads on "olive brown and olive green" and have learned nothing as the two terms are not on the toyota color chart! I just want to see a picture of Olive 637 PLEASE! Thanks!

Here's my 77 in 637

welcome

The confusion is in the Olive green and Olive brown. The Toyota color code is 637 which means it's in the GREEN family. 6 stands for green although the color looks more brownish.
Have a look at this color chart and click on the word "olive" before the 637 and you'll get pictures of Olive Cruisers.

Depending on the sun or the clouds the color changes a bit.

that is an interesting chart i have not seen before. but i question the accuracy of it. i own a titled 78 fj40 with build date of sept 77. the plate located in the engine compartment on passenger fender that has color code for vehicle on mine stated 416. that is dune beige on this chart and it states that dune beige was not a color option for my year. is it that the chart is not complete? do i have a vehicle painted with leftover color?

just curiuos,

andy

Hi Andy,

..... but i question the accuracy of it..... yep, me too and that is all I can say.
I think this chart was made for a specific market. Note that there is no mention of BJ's at all.
The guy who made this chart found the info in brochures and from Cruiser owners so.... the accuracy is questionable.

Be happy with your Dune Beige

so I'm not the only one ... exact same situation, except the build date is Nov/77 ... I found this chart in a couple of threads that shows 416 as a colour from 71-80 ...

Paint code please? - IH8MUD Forum

Checked the link and there are what look like three different colors of cruisers for the "Olive 637". Mine has old paint all over it that looks exactly like the third one which is like a dark brown. Mine is a 77 with a build date of 76. Also the same color as the posted pic from Sue. I'm convinced that that is olive 637, regardless of what the cartoon color on that toyota color chart is. Thanks. Neil

the colour in Sue's picture looks great ... don't see as many 40's with that colour ... I think the colour appears different depending upon the light situation ... good luck ... and, welcome to the Forum ...

Hey Rudi, thanks for that link!
I didn't know it worked like that. That's really helpful.

Cheers, Allen

Here is some more confusion. On this link if you pick the toyota 653 olive it goes to another page where you will see many variations of olive green. CCOT is the only one I have seen list it as Olive Brown. However, simply typing in a search for FJ40 Olive Green comes up with a lot of pictures and the colors are all over the place. I looked closely for one where the sun was like high noon to get a better idea and I'm still nervous that I would end up with brown. The Beast is in Quito and I won't see it for another few months. It is currently red, however, there are places where I see that it was blue. So it is coming completely apart, down to bare metal, repaired as required and re-painted and then re-assembled.

I have a April -1977 Olive 637 original paint vehicle I've been working on for a number of years. This is one of my favorite stock paint colors and I plan on keeping it the same. The vehicle was badly abused then left in the salvage. There was no top on it as purchased so the paint was faded both inside and out. As I do work on various panels it is very interesting to me how the color changes as I clean, polish or sand the old paint. Most of the pics are from the left, rear fender well.
paint j = original, dirty, faded paint
paint I = cleaned with 409
paint h = polished lightly with shop rag and polishing compound (looks pretty close to other 637s I've seen on this site)
paint g = sanded with DA and 180 grit (notice the actual green-ish color that looks close to the 637 color on many of the common color charts) Also notice the light yellowish primer I mentioned on a recent post about primer color.

paint d = light sanding with DA (you can really get the look of the more green paint tint)
20180624_163856 = pic from last year where I used a buffer on the cowl (really has the nice 637 color that I want to reproduce when I re-paint)

I have seen similar paint color change when sanding but not very often. I have a '74 Porsche 914 in Delphi Green. It's called a two-coat metallic. The base color is Saturn yellow but the final color is definitely green-ish.

Do you think Toyota used a similar process with 637 Olive to give it the green/brown tint?
Could it be possible that age causes the green/brown tint (that I love) and that when new this paint color was closer to the Olive green shown on the paint charts?

You got the best color ever made! Check out the build thread in my sig, that is the color I went with. As others have said, the color isnt as simple as red or beige. it has some variation and I remember having some trouble finding the correct code in the paint books. I tried a couple of touch ups, and none were close to what my color ended up being. Lets see some more pictures. Pretty sure I still have the paint can with the info on it if you need it. Welcome!
