Does anyone know the trick to keep drivers side windows rolled up? They work down from the slightest vibrations. These are pre ‘74 doors.

We went through and checked, cleaned and oiled everything during the resto-mod. We very quickly took them back off and removed all the oil, just a little grease on the gears and that helped, but the drivers side door window still falls. I’ve had it out and tightened things up using a punch on the tab that holds the gears.
Nothing looks worn, but the passenger windows don’t fall, I assume because the drivers side has been used more.
Is there any kind of timing between the handle and two gears that would help?

Is there anything else to do besides buy a new operator?

Perhaps you can install several of the flat spring washers that look like potato chips, or o-rings to provide some drag. How is the felt and stuff on the perimeter of the window - maybe some backing to provide a tighter fit.

Thanks for the idea on the washers. Nothing unscrews, it’s all riveted I believe. So I’d have to slot a washer but it might work.
All the felt is brand new.

How are the window felts? The ones the window rides up and down in on the upper frame.

Something I noted on my later doors was the position of the crank handle. Id positioned in a. Certain way while up they easily “fell” down and that allowed the window to roll down some. Something to check

LOL until I read your post I had forgot that mine (1974) used to be the same way. The problem I think, had to do with the spring, but it was so long ago I don’t recall the details. Eventually I just bought a new regulator. I might even still have the old one.

I was wondering about that. My handle is about straight forward right now which seems off somehow, but it’s out of the way of my knee!
I’ll mess with placement.

Does it matter left hand vs. right hand arrangement? lf you switch them, does the spring, meant to counteract the weight of the glass, allow the window to move down? Just a thought.....:hmm:

IIRC if you install on the wrong door, the window doesn't have full stroke

Is your crank up, above center like this, stock, or down, below center to avoid your knee?

@Ditcherman

I’m not sure what stock is, they’ve been apart so much and slipped the gears, but the one I’m having trouble with is about straight forward.
The picture of the door shows the stock orientation of the window regulator assembly. The picture shows the crank handle and its axis, ABOVE the centerline of the window regulator plate. The centerline is defined by the circular bead centered on the plate. The right hand door, stock, would be a mirror image.

Do you have your crank handles installed as shown, or do you have your window regulators reversed, so the handle and its axis are below the centerline of the window regulator? Hopefully, you won't find that ambiguous..

Gotcha. I was talking about the handle orientation.
No, they are not upside down, or flipped side to side or anything like that. I don’t even think you could put it together like that could you? Best case scenario would be the windows are spring loaded down?
