I had one steering arm on the other side that is still attached. Don't know if it is left or right.... the picture above is the side that I do not have an arm for -- I think that is the left side. So I need a right, correct?

When you said rotors are fine, you meant the calipers, right?

I am thinking about breaking out the old oven to do some powdercoating. I was going to do the backing plate/shield. What else can or should I powdercoat?

Rockauto.com PN on the rotor i have in garage is 9838RGS, but it lists other #'s that interchange I just looked they're $20 if you grab one Other PN's on box are 1013237, JBR336, BD61985, 107371, 141510, 121.44037
I typed in 83 FJ60 rotor as a reference.

I have 2 at the house. You can use them and replace later. I got mine from Mark Algazy at Mark's offroad. Marlin sells these as well I think. .I cannot get in his website right now to check. Your looking for disk brake backing plate deletes. See if he has the brake line that goes to as well.. Saves you a trip. See below..

Blocks for brake lines.(splitters) junkyard
Won't need if using delete.. The delete replaces your brake backing plate between the rotor and axle. If need I have backing plates in garage with the parts on them you need.

Marlin double lip seals source_____________
Marlincrawler.com inner axle seal he designed. it's a double lip seal, trust me they are an upgrade.

Cone washers source___________
I got new toyota ones.. they have a star on the top to instal, need 8 studs, 8 cones, 8 nuts and 8 lockwashers
Trust me this is not an area to skimp.. Easiest to order these from Marlin when you call.. you'll need 8 complete with nuts, cones and washers.

brake lines to new caliper____________
Napa #38878 or call marlin i know he has them.

shims for tie rod source ______________
SOR has them cheap. 094-23H-SPR (dunno if Marlin has these or not) used to convert taper to fit FJ40 not FJ60 or minitruck

Arms source
You have 2 options.. you can buy just the driverside from kurt.. Cruiseroutfitters.com has new arms with correct taper and bolt pattern already in them. .. if I can get you a used arm for drivers side then we'll use the shim from SOR.. Might ask marlin when you call if they have one lying around you can buy with the seals.. I'd probably buy the studs, cones, nuts and washers from Marlin as well..

Forgot to ask.. what master cylinder are you running? we'll need to pull out the check valve in the master i can walk you thru that later.

That is part of the upgrade. I have a corvette master that MOfj40 gave me. Otherwise, I have ones from 76 fj.

I will order from Rock auto the stuff today. I will get three as you said you needed an extra.

I am confused on the rest. I think we need to talk on the phone.

call whenever. Working Sat and Sunday days. probably easiest to reach me in eve Friday or in office. Have your ARB stuff.. interesting when I get lockers and snorkels delivered to work. it's fun cause I work with all women, i'm the only guy here. they just roll their eyes.

How do you think we're paying for the basement? :D

back to progress

Ok, so here we go. Got the axle torn down from the Mini truck this morning. No big suprises. But some questions for the uninformed.....

questions

First, it looks like the rear seal here got beat on. There is a big dent. Likewise there was a lot of grease on the rotor as you can likely see.

Second pic is the back of the other rotor. DO I have the right replacement rotors, they do not have pressed studs in them??

Third pic is the pile of parts.

The PN I gave you is correct for that rotor. that's why I asked for a picture of the front of the rotor itself earlier. and yes they do have pressed studs in them. the wheel studs press all the way thru. there is another type of rotor that mounts with 6 bolts and the studs are in the other part of the wheel bearing assembly.

Start getting that stuff cleaned up. Did you figure out arms yet or what to do on that?
The bent seal will be replaced when we rebuild. keep those wheelbearings with whatever side. They rarely go bad unless totally bashed. I have a set if we find them bad.
If you have a press. you can remove the old rotors and toss em. make sure you use an old wheel lug nut to save the wheel mounting stud. you can clean the assembly etc then press on the new rotor as well. If no press wait till your at my house and we'll use mine.
Zip tie the shims to where they were as well. it helps with reference.

Good start.. Did you take a day off yet? Workbench is moved into place for your build. Taking a break from my projects for a week till we get your axle done.. Plus gobbler opened today. Funny, they all must have a calender, the flocks I've been watching for weeks were not there this morning.

btw, that last pile is exactly what parts you are keeping. :) Makes it get much smaller doesn't it.
Toss the knucle bearings in the trash. You'll need at least 2 tubs of grease if using the smaller ones. I prefer grabbing a bigger tub and bring some good ziplocks to pack bearings.

I was afraid that I got the wrong rotors. Oops.

How does the 26th look for you?

Did not figure out steering yet. Need to give you a call to discuss.

Do I need to clean up anything from the FJ axle, or is it all trash?

Thanks,

hy-jack on

I hear you! Although my brother and I doubled on a couple of nice toms up in Iowa on Saturday. Now I just need to work on the Kansas birds!

alright back on topic!!

26th is great, i need to be done by 4 tho. so 9ish to 4 I can work.
You are keeping the FJ axle. you shouldn't need anything from minitruck axle but pull the brake line splitter off it and possibly cut off the tabs that held the flex brake lines. Minitruck axle is what I need you to pull this stuff off of !
You ordered correct rotors.. You will be amazed how much you will learn from this project. I enjoy your excitement.

Erik's off the grid until Monday so hopefully somebody else can answer that for you! :)

will work great.. FYi there is a redish type that smells better but who rebuilds knuckles with their nose!

parts

Still no package from Marlin, so I am glad that monday did not work out.

How was hunting?

interesting.. my package from Marlin got here.
Darn birds.. still had fun in the monsoon even if i just knocked the wind out of one and gave him a bald spot on the chest. Holler when your ready.
