I've just noticed a small puddle of oil under my 2002 LX470.
Looks like the leak is at the Drain Plug on the Transfer Case.
I assume this is the Transfer Case? See photo.

In the photo have I identified the fill plug?
What oil do I need?
I assume I just open the fill plug and pump in some more oil?
Both are 24mm.
I'm guessing when it was serviced they did not use a new Crush Washer.

Replaced crush washer with Toyota part - still getting a leak at the drain bolt.
Should I have used something on the drain threads like say
pipe thread tape?

For me, I'd check the torque, even check the wrench calibration. If it is leaking at the proper torque, I'd get a new bolt and a new washer and give it another chance.

Good luck.

Brake clean the plug area and inspect for cracks. If a new crush washer didn't fix it and the bolt/hole isn't obviously stripped, the case might have cracked when the last service was done.

Do people use toyota brand transfer case oil or is there no such thing ? and what is the recommended miles between changes. I'm new to the 4wd scene is the transfer case constantly being use in normal driving in H correct? .Thankyou.

FWIW - I have reused my crush washer several times and no leaks.

After a few days of wiping up small puddles of oil, and insuring
that the Drain Bolt was torqued to 27 ft-lbs, the leaking stopped.

Spend some quality time perusing the Factory Service Manual
and it states for leaking Transfer Case that the causes could
be "overfill". Now I had drained and refilled my Transfer Case when I installed
new crush washers - so perhaps I just put in too much oil.

BTW, where does the oil seep out? It had looked to me like it was
at the Drain Bolt but perhaps there is a hole somewhere higher and
the oil flowed onto the Drain Bolt.

It could also be from the speedo cable connector. The oring in there need replace. It runs down the body then lowest point below the drain bolt.
