Hello all!

How often (in miles) do you change your oil?

I m running Mobile One synthetic, and have been changing it every 5000 miles.

As you all know, this is not cheap! Do I need to suck it up, or can I extend the interval?

Thanks much!

I'm 5k as well, more out of habit and ease of remembering. Try Blackstone if you want to see how it's doing. 2UZs are easy on oil so 10k shouldn't be a concern.

I realize your question was about the oil and not the filter...

However, if you're planning on extended oil change intervals you should take a hard look at the filter you're using. The filter media in most filters is not designed for prolonged change intervals. So I would recommend upgrading to a Mobil One filter, which is specifically designed for longer intervals.

Yes, they are more expensive...

Toyota recommends oil changed every 5K no mater what oil you use. The only vehicles they go 10K intervals on are passenger cars with 0w-20 oil. Some model trucks that use synthetic still have 5k intervals.

My Service Book says 5k for severe service and 7500 for normal service. Is this typical of all year 100 series?

7,500 to 10k and I have sent multiple samples to blackstone to verify.

I send a sample to blackstone at every change and get very similar results. With a Mobil 1 m1-209 filter, they have recommended to extend the 7500 mile interval and shorten a 10k interval. I settled at about 8k. This is with 150-300 miles of trail use between changes, on a 2000 with 140k miles, no towing. If you drive in fairly clean conditions, 10k miles is probably no problem.

thanks!

Thank you all for the replies- as always, great information- especially about the filter!

off to the auto parts store.....

This is with mobil1 oil also?

I am running amsoil signature 0w30 and amsoil EO filter in my wife's GX and was planning on going 1 year which should work out to about 12k. I am thinking I might shorten that and send the sample in to see what they say. We bought her car last fall so this is the first interval. From what I have read the 2UZ is pretty easy on oil.

Sorry, I forgot to include that. Mobil 1 5w-30.

That's an amazing result with the group 3 oil. I guess there's more to mobil1 than I believed. Ill be sending my sample in from my euro castrol 0w-30. This is typically used on the non M BMWs at 15k intervals

There are some older threads with mobil 1 blackstone tests at 12k with good results. Even in my 10k sample, there was remaining additive.

Can you point to where it says "no matter what oil you use?" Even if they did, it would be for liability purposes only. As in, if you were to call the corp number right now and ask if lifting your rig 2" is a good idea, or if its ok to put 285/75/16 tires on, what do you think they'd say?

I've done numerous UOA tests. All have come back good at 7-10k OCI. Only time it came back slightly negative was when using a K&N drop in filter.

I normally use Valvoline 5w-30 synthetic with NAPA Gold (Wix) oil filter. K&N oil filters also provided excellent results.

Is the Mobil1 Extended Performance 5w30 (which claims to be good for 20k miles interval) really good for 20k miles (provided Mobil1 oil filter is used)? Or do people still keep 10k-mile interval even if this oil is used?

I do the oil changes by my self $42 for Castrol full synthetic 7 quarts and OEM filter every 2500-3000 miles. Oil is cheap and abundant while, a Japense made 2UZFE are very rare.

I do every 5k and Toyota filters. At 20 yrs old and in excess of 300k miles, having the techs do their visual inspections on at regular intervals is helpful for me. If you do your own inspections, then do what is comfortable for you.

Drove a 100 series diesel in the UK for several years. FWIW the recommended oil change interval was 10,000 miles. Nothing offered other than full synthetic. This LC was my company car so there was no expense to me one way or the other but I was required to follow Toyota's service schedule. My wife was driving a 325 petrol BMW during this same timeframe and the car told us when to bring it in for service. It was a lease so, again, we had to follow the recommended service. FWIW, that interval varied but was generally 10k to 12k miles and was never under 10k.

I use Mobil 1 synthetic in all my vehicles and generally go 8k +/- between oil changes.

Change oil when it's dirty. Why would you change good clean oil? Changing clean oil at a certain mileage is not extending the life of a 2UZFE engine. However, shortening your finances, yes.
