Royal Purple

For those of you running Royal Purple fluids... Do you buy locally (I'm in BR) or do you order online? I was determined to re-grease, change my oil, transmission, transfer and front/rear diffs this weekend and settled on Mobil 1 because I figured I'd be able to find everything I needed locally, but I couldn't find a few things. I want to get it all done at once, so I didn't do any of it. :bang:

I figure if I'm going to order everything online, I'll just suck it up and go purple. I'm a little worried about springing leaks, but we'll see. I don't know when the last time any of the trans or gear oil has been changed, so it's top of my list right now.

I got all the fluids for my FJ at O'riellys auto parts on Airline. I am currently running royal purple fluids and need to change mine again fairly soon. I am not sure whether or not I will stick with it or go back to mobil 1. :hhmm:

Are you just not seeing benefit for the added cost? Or have you had some issues with the purple?

I am just not sure that I am using it for the right application. They (my fluid vendor for work) say it is a racing oil that you should replace every 3000 miles or after heavy (racing) use. I would rather go the 5k to 7k oil change intervals depending on my driving during those miles.

I will probably try amsoil after I go to mobil 1 just to see if I can tell a difference. When I switched from whatever was in my diffs when I got the FJ to Royal Purple I noticed maybe marginal improvement so who knows. I do not run the kind of test that are needed to give a answer that should sway you either way. But as long as you are running a quality synthetic you should be fine.

I went back to Mobil one. I can't tell a difference in terms of smoothness of the engine running or that the oil takes longer to get a dark color to it between the two. (my very secientific analysis :) )

You can buy mobil one in the large 5 quarts or so at walmart with enough for the whole engine for about half the price it would take of Royal Purple, which last time i looked was around 8.50 a quart.

Also, according to Royal Purple they say their oil is good for 12K mile intervals, its on their website. So i am not sure what that guy was telling you. Synthetic oil doesn't brake down as fast as dyno oil. So it is designed to be able to last for longer intervals than dyno oil. So saying that RP needs to be changed every 3K miles makes no sense.

Yeah, I've decided to do a few different things.

Mobil 1 Synthetic High Mileage for the engine. It seems to be most accessible.
Red Line MT-90 in the transmission. Folks on T4R.org rave about it.
Red Line 75w90 in the Front Diff and Transfer.
Whatever decent brand I can get 80w-90 in the Rear Diff. This weight seems harder to come by. I think I've seen Valvoline on the shelves. :meh:

Royal Purple has a few different motor oils... The Standard, High Performance (HPS) and Xtreme Performance Racing (XPR). Maybe the XPR demands more frequent fluid changes?

80w-90 is readily available at NAPA in Valvoline and a NAPA brand. That is what I use in the tranny, t-case and both diffs. As I understand it, there really is no appreciable difference between that and the 75w-90.

Thanks for the tip. Do LLK club members get a discount at NAPA stores? I remember seeing that in an old thread, I think. :hhmm:

AAA membership gets you a Napa discount - just sayin'

so does AARP membership :o

I think Deryl worked out a deal with the NAPA in Covington. I don't know if that means a discount at all of them. Not sure if we have an account or if it was just a local deal. :hhmm:

I'm alittle way off from the AARP membership.

Um, er, I, um, am a member of AARP. And have been for several years. But I didn't know I could get a NAPA discount.

Must have slipped your mind, eh? ;)

I haven't used the AARP card at NAPA, but if I recall correctly, it's only good for a 5% discount and AAA for 10% - haven't checked lately, as the Baton Rouge Napa is so far from my house I'd burn the discount in gas and time
